JV Askem
John Victor Askem taught Jesse and several other Sequim
High School athletes how to Olympic lift. Jesse and
JV trained together for a number of years and spent a
lot of time discussing, planning, arguing and debating
the study of strength. Many of Jesse's strength training
philosophies were adopted from JV's principles. JV strict
military pressed his bodyweight of 215 pounds just two
weeks before he died from a brain tumor in 2003. Even
though he knew his time was coming, he never stopped training.
He loved the iron. He had an iron mind. His teachings
live on through all those that he mentored. JV wrote the
following articles.
