eh....

if they weren't trying to make money (pop up ads, charging for memberships), and if they didn't just copy and change colors of their racing site, i would support it.

I don't know who made the site, but it just seems like they don't have a real interest in the sport and just looking to make some dough.

my $.02.

I always thought this was the place for that.

Well, yeah it is one of the sources. There is never just one source. I just took that from the website itself.

I could only imagine that this money will go to expand the sports. Certainly toward someone's income, but I would bet it will help the quality of the sport over time as well. Maybe I am trying my hand at optimism...

pop up adds? i opened it in firefox and i-explorer and didnt get any.

membership is also free, not sure how you concluded that you would be charged to join but rest assured it is free to all. You pay to download contest video (premium membership) if you choose to do so, but not for a membership.

eh...
whoever made the site is obviously looking to make some money in an untapped market. Look at their other web properties. The site isn't even custom, it's just a template of their other sites.

I'm turned off by it.

Well I guess I'm on the fence; so to speak.

Web site design: Who cares ~ a sight could be pink with purple bunny angles. But as long as it has quality info I still be there.

Money: was a bit surprised by that. However I think the "plan" is for professional or at least very skilled film crews some of the bigger contests.

Who knows; in the future some of the videos and stuff may be tips/tricks/technique featuring some of the pros. Just speculating.

Just don’t beat it up too much before it has a chance to get to its feet.

Looks like a good site to me. No pop ups (there's no ads on the site, so why there would be pop-ups?), the forum looks well laid out, with some interesting sections, the interviews they've done are with people that are actually on the US strongman scene and their premium membership, if it does all it claims to, is actually pretty good value. $99 for a year, getting you 25+ shows and other random vids? $4 a show ain't bad.

As for being a template... well, other than T-Nation, show me a strength site that isn't a template, usually Invision or vBulletin. Only time you're going to get a unique design web site is when there's money to be spent. Can't imagine there's a great deal of revenue being generated in the sport of strongman in the US...

well, i'll leave it at this...that forum will become unusable with a couple of weeks. going with a free board like PHPBB is just like a big doorway for spam bots.

That site will get litered with 100's of spam messages a day (i know from experience. PHPBB sucks)

Attached is a screenshot from the Nationals videos. Just so people know what quality video you're getting for your $100.

The screenshot is at the video's native resolution, and at the same quality as the video. It doesn't look any worse from JPG compression or anything like that.

I can't tell which big bald guy is which.

So far it looks like it has potential to be a good site but it has a few bugs.
For instance, everything I added to my Strongman Profile was erased because I didn't fill out the category for my state. I live in Canada.

Have you really looked around at any contests!?!?!? You can't tell one big bald guy form the next anyways! (coming from a big bald guy!)

It really upsets me that there is so little support for this site....you all want up to date and on time contest reports, professional quality videos, and advice and tips from the pros, but you don't want to pay for it? Do you know anyone in strongman getting rich? This site is not to rip people off, it is to provide a "ONE STOP" place for all things American Strongman. Also it is not only for strongmen it is for fans of strongman....this site, if promoted properly could do our sport some good. Won't it be nice to be able to watch Pro Nats as soon as it finishes? Or maybe something like the Fit Expo in the future?

Marshall brings up a great point. Many people whine and complain that the turnaround on getting contest info to the public is slow, whether it is Am Nats, Pro Nats, or Pro Worlds.

Here is a website that is offering to do this. For a small fee (a previous poster broke it down; not too expensive), you can have up to date info on all the "goings on" in the world of strongman.

Now you guys are still complaining? Pissed that people are making money? I don't get it. What do you people want? A totally up to the minute website about strongman for NO COST? Cool, no problem, let me get on that after I secure the land deed for my mansion in Fantasy Land.

A totally up to the minute website about strongman for NO COST?The Internet as we know it has spoiled people. Wasn't there a discussion on here around WSM time where people were pissed that videos were being taken off YouTube?

It's the age of Web 2.0. Everything has to be free, and in the public domain and without copyright.

Which, quite frankly, is just dumb.

(Reference - see the woman who was caught downloading 1,702 songs illegally, and went to court instead of paying the minimal fine that everybody else paid (something like $2500). I mean, what was her defense? "I really wanted them." "Music is like the wind man, it doesn't obey your rules." "Well, everybody else is doing it..."

She ended up being fined over $200,000 and will basically be paying this off for the rest of her working life. Link to story on BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7029229.stm)

I'm not going to lie to you - I laughed.)

I'm sure if somebody came out with an actual print magazine, which would of course have adverts, and charged $5 per month for it, and it had regular interviews and columns with US Pro Strongmen and articles about the sport in general then it would sell just fine.

Ask people to pay on a site that is 98% free, but charges for the videos?

It's somebody looking to make "a quick buck from an untapped market."

Go figure...

Hopefully it will one day offer what you say above. Right now it looks rushed out the door, videos are low quality, there's only 1 article (and it's not telling anyone anything they don't already know), etc, which does not meet expectations for a paid site. And I'm sure some people are more than a little annoyed they can't put videos of their crew at contests up on youtube anymore. Publicity is good for the sport, and if now the only way to see videos is to pay for them on an obscure website, fewer people are going to see them.

I just feel like I paid $100 for videos that aren't even watchable. I have no idea who is competing, what times they got, what place they're in, what weight class they're in, etc. I was expecting much better. Hopefully they'll change my mind at the next contest they cover.

{Edited - I was originally under the impression that you couldn't put video of yourself on youtube}

I cannot comment on the video quality as I have not seen them. I will agree that for $35 per DVD or $100 for the website fee, the videos should be of top quality. If they are not, how about speaking to the website owner and offering suggestions?

About the personal video, I could be wrong, but I could have sworn that Dione said that taking video of yourself, even at Nats, is fine. If you had someone take a few videos of you and posted them on Youtube, I think that is okay. She just doesn't want someone to take video of the whole contest and sell it (like Dane G. was doing for a lot of contests) or post it online.

Unless she announced something different at Nats, this is how she had spoke about it with her online response.

ive heard from the site owners that quality and editting will be improved on many of the future videos. I think the huge amount of competitors at nats made the files so big it wouldnt be real practical to download a super high quality vid and would have taken way too much time to thouroughly edit, remember you are talking about over 10hrs of competition time between the two days. im much more excited about the big pro contests that have less competitiors

I just don't see how it helps the sport. The only people that will pay the fee to see videos is either the hardcore fan, or some competitors...

it's not going to help the sport grow by making the casual viewer pay for videos.

great points james...

i would also like to note that the site is having a contest...if you sign up for the premium account in Dec, you have the chance to win some stone molds...

why would anyone sign up for a premium account when there is little to no content??

i ordered the online videos yesterday and had access to them last night. I think the quality is pretty good and the audio is great. I am a little upset that they happened to have some "technical problems" during the stones and missed mine and a couple other guys stone run. I emailed the owner and he put a disclaimer on the site.
So far good to go, i won't be buying a premium membership just yet. I'm gonna give them a couple of months to get the kinks worked out

I'm not sure it does help the sport. Don't see how it harms it either.

It's providing aditional coverage and trying to do that without losing money, or maybe even (gasp shock horro) making a little.

But they're selling the rights to view contest footage that they'll have taken time effort and expense to film, there's no scam here, no "quick buck" being made
