View Full Version : Does anybody else want a "General Discussion" forum?

Recently I submitted a thread that was totally unrelated to strongman. I received many helpful responses, even one from a Pro Strongman. However, moderator Mr O'Neil deemed the thread unworthy of this site and deleted it, oh well.
The whole situation got me thinking. We are a community here. Sure "Physical Advancement" is what brought us together, but we may be interested in what our fellow members have to say on other topics. Is it possible to add a "General Discussion" forum? If it's too much trouble, I truly understand, but myself and maybe others would enjoy that addition.

Yeah I think it'd be great...many people have become good friends through this site, and online is the easiest way to chit chat....We have this option on my BB site and its great for those of us who want to chat time to time.

I didn't see the thread, but I don't understand why he would have deleted it. There are plenty of non-lifting and non-training threads in the "Main Forum" section. It seems to me that this site can have some real hit-or-miss moderations. I understand being a mod can be a difficult job, but there seems to be a real lack of consistency in moderating the posts on this site. What some mods will pass, others will delete. Are the forum rules really that ambiguous that there can be such a difference from mod to mod?
Also, isn't the Main Forum for off-topic discussions anyway?
"Discuss anything LEGAL"
That what it says. Again, I didn't see Corey's thread, but if it wasn't illegal or offensive, and I can't imagine Corey posting something illegal or offensive, why did it need to be deleted? Should the forum descriptor say, "Discuss anything LEGAL, but only if the mod on duty at the time likes the subject"?
Finally, I didn't vote, but I always thought the Main forum was sort of a General Discussion area.

I voted No. The lack of a general chat forum is what I like best about this board. Too many other boards have one, and its filled with people who post all day, with little or no relvance to strength training. You then end up with members who have thousands of posts, and titles like 'Master Supreme of Strength'. Click on their profile, view all posts, and they're nothing but posts on football, politics, funny jokes, etc.... It's hard to take advice from an esteemed member who actually doesn't lift though!
I understand where you're coming from, there are a ton of good people here who can certainly help out in other areas. But its tough to balance the members who want a quality strength board with those who are obsessed with post counts, titles, and reputation points.

You make a good point about the main forum possibly already being a general discussion forum.
My thread was about dirty stinky diapers and the best way to take care of them. Lots of other dads posted some great ideas and I think we all found the topic amusing having shard in the same problem.
To be fair, I only assume it was Jay O'Neil who deleted it since the last post I was notified of was from him saying something like, "Seriously, a thread about dirty diapers on a strongman site" and then the thread could not be found.

But the website already has plenty of posts on football, jokes, etc. Are those threads not acceptable? And if not, why haven't they been deleted?

I agree with what you said and see your point.
Some people may also tell me to chat about unrelated topics elsewhere, but nowhere else is there a collection of like minded, respectful people as on this site.
Just look at how well the recent religion thread was handled. This is a testament to the quality of members who post here, and they are who I would like to chat with about other topics with.

Have a General Discussion forum with the understanding that if the moderators see a thread getting out of hand they have to right to lock the thread. Their decision should be the last word on any matter. Everyone has to show reasonable courtesy and conduct themselves as they would have others do.
Remeber, this is Jesse Marunde's forum- I doub't Callie or the children would want to look back on this area of the site and have regrets.
Can we prehaps agree on this?

Corey-
I agree with what you and others are saying, but that is what the main forum is supposed to be for. I myself have posted a bunch of threads that are not strongman related on the main forum.

I had no problem w/ the diaper thread. It was a little funny and very off topic, but taking into account all of the other crap that pops up in the "off topic" section, eh, why not. You have to keep in mind that Jesse approved every mod here to make decisions in his stead. Jay and the other mods are still here because they're apparently performing as Jesse and Callie (would) expect them to. You just can't argue with that. I'm sure the forum will continue to evolve within specific parameters, but right now I think it's going at about 95% of optimum. Introducing a new forum subcategory probably wouldn't improve the quality of the forum, but would likely have the potential to degrade it and create more of a workload for an already taxed group of mods (not trying to be a kiss-butt, just realistic). I say "If it's not broken, don't fix it".

I thought that that was what the main forum was for. I thought that anything specific to strongman was in the training forum.

I've lately been curious as to why some things get a pass and some things don't. I have no problem with rules/standards/whatever you want to call them....I'd just like to know what they are.

If that is what the main forum is for, I am at a loss as to why the thread was deleted. It was not discussing anything illegal, was not offensive and it was not detracting from sponsors or their products.
The only reason I could think of for deletion, was that it had nothing to do with strongman or other forms of "Physical Advancement." Again, oh well, no big deal.
Are there issues with the usage of space on the web site? I know nothing of broadband and space constraints of message boards, but I doubt a text only thread used up a substantial amount of space.
I guess if the main forum may be used to discuss any "off topic" topics there really is no need for a "General Discussion" forum. Just be ready to have your thread deleted for no apparent reason.

i didn't even see the thread, but there have been others started about movies, sports teams, etc, that are not related to strongman.
I don't think we need another sub forum if that's what it's used for. I pretty much agree with ryan.

My point was that sub-forum with a 'lounge' or off-topic purpose is bound to get a few users who post there all day, every day, and don't contribute to the actual purpose of the board.
I agree the Main Forum already has threads similar to what I mentioned, and I have no issue with that, but it also has plenty of strength related threads so there is a good balance.
Oh, and Corey, get a diaper genie or the knock-off they sell at Walmart. Great invention!

Since I was called out on it.... so much for operating under the Radar...
It was a thread about dirty Diapers and the smell they produce. IF you need help with issues like that try google.
My feeling is that we have people starting threads about when they should scatch there back and if they cant scratch it does anyone know where to go to get it scratched.
Come on guys really. We are adults and all have internet capabilities as well as Some common sence. I imagine that the majority of our forum visitors arent looking for diaper tips. Perhaps if you have future diaper or general housekeeping issues there is another Forum that covers these things.
And in the future if you have an with something i did, feel free to PM me... I am pretty sure that is the right thing to do. Feel free to vote. I have no problem with that... but Stand by my decision to delete that thread.

I like the idea of a general discussion thread. Like Wes said, I have grown akin to a few people on here and like to discuss other aspects of my life with them. I'd like to be able to do it on here instead of sending PM's saying "hey everyone, read up on other topics of my life on these threads."
A few examples of other things I would like to discuss,
The fire we had at a strippers house Friday night.
Why does my daughter growl?
Does anyone here play poker...way too much?
Is there a possibility that Corey DuCharme was born a woman?
These and other topics would fit in great in a general discussion forum.

But there are also other forums for discussing the NFL, religion, UFC, TV shows, and other things that regularly get posted here. It seems to me that this is just a case of one thread making it by most of the mods, but not appealing to one mod so it gets deleted.
I guess I just don't understand or like the inconsistent moderations. (And for the record, this is not specifically directed towards you, Jay. You just happen to find yourself in the middle of a specific example of something I find annoying. This is nothing personal.) With only slight variations for personal subjectivity, shouldn't the mods all basically mod the same way? If there is that much room for interpretation, maybe the forum rules should be revised.
And, going along with what I said earlier, I don't think we need a new forum section as long as the Main Forum is moderated according to what I understand the current rules to be.

Since you mentioned it...my shoulder flexibility sucks and I can't scratch my back unless there's a wall or a tree around. Suggestions?

I'd support a general forum (with the Marunde family blessing) as this could free up the main forum to be purely about strongman and strength sports. The members media section could then focus exclusively on strength videos and pictures. That way a crazy dumb thread like my wookie bath thread won't be next to vids of 800lb deadlifts.

Nothing personal... I realize that... you are a great board member. However you are wrong. We have a MOD section and we regualte things by OUR commitee. We were all selected by Jesse Marunde himself. The board is not regulated by committee. We operate under certain guidelines and if members dont like certain things then they are free to move on. However the rules were set by Jesse and will not be changed.
We do have other issues we discuss... but they have to do mainly with a sporting lifestyle and well being of the mind and body as well as the soul. However, Discussions about dirty diapers do not appeal to the majority of the people that search and read our site... Of course I imagine you can argue that I cannot speak fro all of them... but let common sence dictate. If you want to know where to buy diapers or how to change them or any other topic involving them... try Google or perhaps a forum more suited to those needs.
End of discussion.

My ten month old son recently started growling, fiercely. Seriously, if you heard him from another room you would think there was a rabid badger in there.

O.K. Doc said it is what it is, so that's the end. If he deleted it, don't call him out. If anyone deletes something don't call them out. Do you all think the mods are in a paid job doing moderation?

we certainly have enough mods for another forum!
I would have to vote "no" on a general discussion board......lets keep to the basics. Enough threads have gone bad just talking about strongman issues......i could only imagine what would happen if we started talking about the stuff that really matters!

Alright, I'll go ahead and speak up on this one...
I voted no. Having a forum designed specifically for general BS would just be too difficult to keep clean and family friendly, in my opinion. One of the reasons this board is so awesome is that there isn't a ton of random crap that gets posted up. Granted, there are some posts that are silly and poking fun at some members that get to stay, b/c they are good for a laugh. I think we moderators have a fair bit of stuff we have to clean up as is, without the general discussion forum. Allowing the general discussion forum is just asking for trouble as far as I'm concerned.

There is a time and place for every post. EVERYONE not just the moderators should use good judgement about what to post.
Please remember why Jesse made this forum.
1. Have a legit strength forum
2. Have the only strength forum where there is no drama
Lets keep this place classy
Callie
