View Full Version : Kirk Nowack Biceps Tear

I was standing there no more than five feet away from Kirk Nowack last saturday as he attempted a 750 deadlift. The bar moves off the floor quickly and all the sudden he drops it and says very calmly "It's torn". I said "what?" he then curls his arm up and I could see that his biceps was rolling up already. He is scheduled for surgery this afternoon. Don't count him out because anyone that knows Kirk knows that he has already mapped out and engineered his comeback.

This photo is one week after the tear.

The night before Kirk did his biceps we had one of our powerlifters trying a 585lb squat raw and his knee crashed in and the whole bar came down across his neck! That resulted in a torn MCL and ACL. I was watching that one close up too. I'm shell shocked now.

I had the same injury this summer...during the hammer toss the hammer hit the turf and my arm hyperextended and tore the longhead of the bicep... Didnt hurt but I knew immediately what happened. Distal tears are fairly rare to the orthopedic community so they will probablt have a alot of residents swarmming around Kirk.
On a side Note, Thanks for the T-shirt and hat Steve... I really appreciate it and thanks for being so nice to my friend Laura who picked it up for me.

i never use the supinated grip on deads, i just use a conventional grip, i think 90% of bicep tears on deads is the bicep that is supinated, it's just to much on the bicep especially with the bigger weights! wrong or right! i'm no big time deadlifter but i do them [525 max] and i hate that grip!

That's the same way Harrison Bailey tore his one biceps head on the first throw of his first games last season. Heavy hammer toss.

Your welcome for the shirt man, represent Iron Sport on the west coast!!

I'm with you Jay. Since I had surgery on my left shoulder a few years back I always just go knuckles forward grip when I do deads. I go with no straps for a few sets for some grip work and just use straps the rest of the way. Much easier on my shoulder and biceps. Kirk even said right after it tore that he was thinking about using straps but then just said "nah" and did it with the over under grip.

I'm trying to get my son to switch to a conventional grip and just work on improving his grip strength (or use a hook grip). I've seen many guys rip their bicep on the palm up arm.
