a little bio:
20 yrs
6'2"
250lbs
Football background. I'm not very brute strong but i'm more explosive than most. I qualified for nationals and i'm deciding to give it a go. It's gonna be a learning experience as i know i will get destroyed. Checking out Dan Harrisons' training log reassured me of this.

My training:
I alternate upper body and lower body with an occasional day off much like brian siders does. Lower body day almost always has a squat and deadlift and upper body always has a press and overhead movement. My squat and dead is great, my bench and overhead sucks. Event training is on sunday but honestly i haven't done any in about 3 weeks. Last time i did i took 700lbs for a stroll on the yoke and my core was considerably weak. Also did some 270lbs farmers cause they're my favorite.

This mornings workout:
Squats:
135x5
225x5
315x5
405x5
added belt
455x5
500x5(not easy but i had more left in me)

deadlifts
315x5
405x5
500x4(i had another one in me but my form was getting sketchy)

Some heavy abs and i was off to work. Then when i'm 10 minutes away from the gym my boss calls and tells me not to come in for another hour. Sucks cause i really wanted to do some assistance for my back.

Here's the plan tonight:
Light yoke walk(500lbs for a couple reps)
Log clean and press max(i don't even know where i'm at with the log)
Truck push and pull

Dave, have fun at Nationals, it will be a great experience. Nice squat for a guy your age!

What show did you do to qualify for nationals?
i didn't have much competition if any at all. The only possible competition was from my training partner Mike Whitmer who got hurt halfway through the competition when he pulled a muscle in his forearm and it swelled up 2" bigger than normal. Wisely, he pulled out of the show.
Regardless, i had a very strong showing, Josh can account for that. Whether that will translate to nationals is a different story.

event training last night:

Everything i touched turned to gold. It helped that it was peak time and the gym was absolutely packed with those idiots that make me thank the Lord that i'm not the typical bicep pumpin, cell phone talking, no leg gym idiot.

Log clean and press:
Haven't done this in a long time. Last time i did my max was 250.

135x4
225x4
250x2! pr
280x1 i had one left in me but i didn't want to drop the log in the gym
When i finally pressed it out i was so psyched especially since i haven't touched a log in over 4 months. 30lb pr from just focusing on my bench for 4 months.
1 arm standing presses
55x8
65x8
75x8
90x8 Pr!! My left arm struggled quite a bit but the right held strong
Tricep pressdown:
210(whole rack)x3setsx8reps
I've never used the whole rack for 3 sets, only 1 before.

Great day all around, i think my crappy overhead days are slowly becoming a thing of the past.

Good to have another log to read. I'm jealous, I would have loved to have qualified to compete at nationals for the experience. Have good time and good luck.

First worked my butt off today installing gutters on a 3rd story mansion all day. Its just a little scary working 3 stories up on a ladder rated for 250lbs when that's what i weigh and i have a 20lb tool belt and i'm carrying 50lbs of gutter up the ladder. Good times.

Close stance squats:
135x5
225x5
315x5
405x5
405x5
445x5 easy but only 2nd time doing close stance in a year so my form is shaky

farmers walk:
220x100ft 1 turn
270x60ft my turn sucked and i had the choice to dump or snap my tibia
320 hold for time 11.76 seconds:
Lots of pain, but it was rewarding afterward. At about 10 seconds into timing me my girlfriend says,"Dave, you're scaring me" with this frightened look on her face. I couldn't help but laugh and i had to drop. I might have had another 10 seconds in me.

did some glute ham drops, heavy ab pulldowns.....now its off to eat my publix sub and drink my 1/2 gallon of milk

10/14 yolk training
weight-252lbs

yolk 1/4 squats(5-6in motion)
500x5
700x5
800x3
900x3
1000x2
1100x1(this one was slow and grueling but it happened and i was totally shocked)
Yolk walk
800lbsx20ft stumbling, bumblin took about a minute(multiple drops) it was very hard to stay tight, i kept swaying
700lbsx50ft first time i dropped 3 times and this really pissed me off
700lbsx50ft 11.87 seconds i was so mad from my last walk that i rage ran this one

Great workout, i'm spent. Time to go home and eat and fight with the old lady.

Dude, you're a sick man! Personally, I really don't like farmers walks. However, I LOVE frame carries. I am obsessed with every strongman event, but I just plain hate farmers. I'm not shitty at them....just hate them. Not fun at all...just hard work. What exactly do you like about them?

Once i get those things up and stabilized i can pretty much run with them. To think i'm running with 500+lbs in my hands gives me quite a rush.
One thing i don't like about them is turns, they are very difficult for me cause i always want to rush through them.
Dan, you're so good at the farmers you should love them. I can't even imagine picking up 420, let alone taking a step.

10/15 bench/triceps workout
weight: 254lbs that was at 10am too, all the heavy training and eating is paying off.

flat bench
135x5
225x5
275x5
315x4 2board
close grip:
225x8
tricep pressdowns

easy workout today, its a tradition to come in and bench with the boys on saturdays. Today happened to be a deload day which worked out well for me cause i'm shot from implement training.

Good news:
My buddy dave lieb is gonna train implements with me tomorrow. He's got a warehouse and weights to play with. We tend to train well together

Tomorrow:
tire flip
yolk walk
farmers walk
sled drag

davebeers
10-16-2005, 02:39 PM
10/16
weight: don't know i was training at a warehouse
Took 2 ephedra 1 hour before for a little kick in the ass

Yolk:
100lbs of the weight on the yolk was chains for added instability
500lbsx50ft
600lbsx50ft
700lbsx50ft nice job probably under 12seconds
800lbsx50ft steady quick pace but right before i put it down my left knee slightly hyperextended and sent me crashing to the ground. It was pretty scary, but i walked it off and felt ok in a couple minutes

Farmers walk:
jumped right to 282lbs x200ft with 1 turn
went 100ft at a quick pace went to make the turn and i couldn't pull it off. I know i can get it i just need to practice this 2x a week.
I tell you what those farmers hurt so deep, it literally feels like my spine is going to snap under the load. Only the farmers give me that feeling

Sled drag
600x50ft
700x25ft hard to get started but once i did it was pretty easy till i slipped and decided to call it a day.

Great workout, finally got a training partner that's dedicated. We're gonna train every sunday....supposedly. We'll see if he hangs around.

10/20 gym workout
weight 255lbs(goal is 260 at nationals)

Front squats:
135x5
225x5
315x3
365x5 PR!(great set, bruised both shoulders somehow)

reverse band deadlifts(green band lightens 120 at bottom and 45 at top
400x5
450x3
550x3
600x3
650x3PR!
700x2PR!
750x1/2 i was so damn close that it pissed me off.
My previous best with this same set-up was 650 for a single.

I think my diet had something to do with my success today....i eat literally all day long
breakfast: Mcdonalds- big breakfast, breakfast burrito, cinammon role, coke
snack: half calzone, 1/2 gallon milk
lunch: 5 pieces pappa johns pizza, 1/2 gallon milk, 1/2 gallon gatorate
snack:5chicken tenders,half calzone,1/2 gallon gatorate, 8oz iced tea
pre-gym snack: 1lb grassfed beef, 1/2 gallon gatorade, green beans, 3 rolls
post-gym: turkey club combo from dq with medium sprite
before bed: more beef and a 1000calorie weight gain shake

Someone calculate that calorie total, i bet its over 7000

The more i weigh the stronger i am so this kind of eating is what i'm gonna get used to. Tommorrow i'm gonna do some log pressing.

And no way am i leaving because of that damn hurricane. Everyone is freaking out, there's no gas, ice, water and that thing is still 3-4 days away.
Half the town is boarded up already. Mark my word, i'll be training during that hurricane. I will be out there with the yoke doing some heavy walks. Nothing like 150mph winds to help you work on core stability.

You have a lot of power. Solid lifting. You will not be disappointed at your placing on November 5th.

10/22 bench workout
weight: 254lbs

My back is still crazy sore from deadlifting so i took it easy today.

2 board bench press with doubled purples(200lbs at top,100at bottom)
135x3
185x3
225x3(pooped out on last one)
225x3 very solid set
225x3 another good set

I also had my denim shirt and belt on during all heavy sets. I decided to stop early as to not hurt my event training tomorrow. Here's the plan for tomorrow:

Log press-work up to max then 280lbs for reps
truck pull-hooking up to my buddies work truck
farmers walk- 200ft. with turn, my goal is to make the turn 280lbs
yolk walk- i gotta get 900lbs for at least 50ft.

Well,
Still don't have power from that damn hurricane but decided to train today.
While its still fresh here's what happened yesterday:

10/25 256lbs
squats
135x5
225x5
315x5 put on belt
405x5
445x5
500x5
550x5
585x5 This was a big pr and was awesome considering the gym had no power and i didn't even have a spotter. Just me and my belt.

10/26 weight: 258lbs
one of my worst and best training days ever
log clean and press
120x3
220x3
250x1
280x0 couldn't clean the damn log, this is the first time i couldn't clean this, the clean is usually my strong point.

Farmers walk
I stormed off and gave the farmers a tug, i put my lunch box at 100' and decided to take a wide turn around it.
220lbsx 200ft- very grueling since i cinched my belt too tight and couldn't take but 1/4 breaths. No drops
280lbsx 200ft!!!! made it the whole way with no drop, didn't even hesitate. I was invincible, touched by greatness, whatever you call it i felt freaking awesome.

stiff legged deadlift from 4"off ground
450x5
500x1
600x1 tugged at it once and it didn't clear. I broke off into my own little raging inferno of a world, dropped to my knees still strapped to the bar, headbutted the bar came back up and pulled it very slowly to lockout.

Overall a couple good training days, this hurricane knocking out power has really got me out of my element as i've had to stay with my parents for the last 3 days.
Saturday will be my last day of training, i will head to clearwater to train with the state chair Tom.

10/28 260lbs!!!
Did not work out today, but posting as if i did almost makes me feel the satisfaction of working out. Tomorrow i head to clearwater to train implements with the florida state promoter. Gonna try to simulate each event if i can. Off to eat!

10/29 weight 262lbs

Went to clearwater and Tom Mitchell trained me in my weak events

Stones 55" platform
225x5
225x5(threw up....alot)
225x3
250x2
250x2
280x0
280x0 i tried to get this one but i could only get it about 2" off the ground. My lower back was shot at this point. I am starting to like the stones, i love the huge scrapes i have in my forearms and the incredible soreness in my lower back right now.

8" Log clean and press
150x5
200x2
250x2
280x0 sloppy form and tom was rushing me through these sets trying to get my wind up a little
250x2
250x2
280x1 this one went up easy, form was great. For some reason i used a split jerk and it worked really well for me. I think i could have gotten 2 out of this

At this point i was shot, i had a great time and plan on making it up there to train at least once a week.

hahaha! Tom did the exact same thing to me two weeks ago.

Sorry I couldn't make it over, I should have just to see you hurl (I did it too last week). I am a little injured right now and taking a couple training days away to get my strength back.

Good work on that log. Hitting a PR, or at least meeting a previous PR, when you are as gassed as Tom can get you in one of these special one-on-ones, is really something to be proud of.

Yeah, the puking would have been a great thing to laugh at. Hell, i would have laughed at me.
Another funny thing was when i first tried 280lbs on the log, i lost control of it halfway to lockout and ended up falling with it into the grass first coming to my knees and then all the way down to the ground. :mag: Lets just say i kept Tom entertained and he'll have some stories to tell the next guy that comes up there to train
