600lb. MEGASTONE
by MustSeeStrongman.com * 2008-03-25
MSS just got word from Steve Slater of Slater Stones......the 600lb. MEGASTONE is about to be poured! We have heard rumors this stone was in the works. It will be the largest atlas stone to date and we know there are a few guys itching to load it. History in the 'making' literally and MSS will be there. Steve is going to sharing some of his insights on stone molding and we intend to bring it back to you. Stay Tuned!
I wonder who will be the one to lift that stone. Does anyone have any thoughts right now?

is it a "big" stone...or a "heavy" stone..or is it both large and heavy?

Poundstone will be the first!
Idris add a poll to your post, this will get interesting.

I'm guessing both... But this will change things, if its just massive, it will give disadvantage to Poundstone because he's a little shorter than other lifters and I'm sure smaller arms. However, if its not insanely huge, but rather just weighted down a lot and so really dense....man I don't know. It matters who gets to try it first too. I would love to see Big Z, Derek, Travis, Dave O, and Pudz give it a shot on the same day...

He sells molds up to 24". But at some point it's just too big to get your arms around. The difference between a 20 and 22 inch stone is HUGE!
I think that 500ish stone that he made was 22" with a huge lead insert. (I think)

pudz is one of my favorites, but I dont think he'll be loading it.
I think Z has the best shot. after seeing 525x3(and he even said maybe 5 in 2 mins), he has to be favorite. lbstone has 2nd best chance imo. loaded a 555. and of course travis has a huge chance-but i have never seen him do a huge huge stone. and dave o. i think could lap it.
i wonder where it will be loaded first..contest...

I think the arnold would be the best place for this to go down....

Are you kidding? I am the reason the 500 lb. barrier on stones was broken and there are as many people (5?) loading them now.
This stone is just under 23" and 520 lbs. The one at the Arnold has nothing on it.

As for this 600 stone... we'll see how it goes.

Tough choice, really though I'd have to say either Big Z, Travis or lbstone in no particular order. I've got a few others in mind that could probably move it but I don't know about a full load. The 3 I mentioned have as good a chance as anybody at loading that behemoth.

A lot of it depends on how gets to try it first. Heck, if they crate it up for 20 years until I get my cybernetics installed, *I* might be the first one. :D
That said, I'd bet Z, Derek, and Travis would have the best chances right now, but there are several others who I bet could get it within the next year or two, including the World's Strongest Mortician and most overlooked stone loader.
(see Marshall, some of us respect you and your stones)

I thanked one mortician yesterday by the way. Couldn't find one this morning (I'll try harder tomorrow, I promise).
I'd like to know how is the World's Strongest Mortician going with the 520lbs stone! I know he laped it, but don't know if he has loaded it!
And for that 600lbs nightmare.... I think if they stay injury-free, Z, Lbstone and Travis take it within 24 months. I think Derek will be the first of them.

shoot..I could make a 600lbs stone with a 20" mold with an 8" cube of lead...(give or take an inch..) lol

I never said travis couldnt. I just had not seen him load a big one. I had not seen that video before right now. I realize he is not called the stoneman for nothing. and I never said he didnt load big stones in the past-just that I had not seen it. and I had seen the vid of poundstone's 555.
z did hit 3 with 525 in 1 minute. I still think he would have the best chance, just my opinion. that is taking nothing away from anyone else's stone loading.

What is this like, if the tree falls and you aren't there, it doesn't make a sound? :T:

What about old Stevie Mac? doesn't anyone think he has a shot? I think a lot of this depends on the diameter of the stone. Z's girth (much like my own) may be a limiting factor if the stones get any heavier. I'd say TO has the greatest wingspan of those mentioned, but I wouldn't put it past any of them and would love to see it. In fact, I think (who's with me?) that Slater should fire off a stone in 15 or 20 lb. increments and let's see some sort of "Record Breakers" event.

haha come on man. you know what I mean. I know travis hasn't been beaten in the stones for quite some time... i just thought big z had the biggest chance once he hit the 525 soo easy.
like i've stated numerous times on here before.. i'm usually wrong.. haha.. so dont mind me.

What size of stone do you guys think is optimal for the heaviest possible stone lift?

Thats a great point about Steve Mac, Chris, I haven't heard from him in a while, he still competing? He hit that 520 pretty solidly last year...

A tungsten cannonball. A 15" cube would weigh approx 1300lbs. That being said, a tungsten cube the size of a basketball would probably be heavy enough.
Too bad tungsten is a rare earth mineral. It's non toxic like lead and one of the most dense substances on our planet.

My darts are made of tungsten! Though I don't think tungsten wouldn't be great for stones (cost aside), because it shatters relatively easy.
I just meant if you were trying to load the heaviest stone possible, and can choose any diameter for the stone, what would you pick? 22"ers are easier than 24"ers, but if they're too small (ie a 12" 600lb ball of tungsten [I did the math :-)]) it seems like that would be damn near impossible to pick up.

AAAAAAHahahahahahaha! I cracked up reading this and the above post!
I think a 600lb stone is a little out of my league right now....in all reality I don't see anyone but Z giving this a real go right now, although I don't think the stoneman and D-Rok, are far behind, I have noticed that apparently if you want to load big stones you have to get something bigger than the 4 330's I have! Hahahahahahaha! I'm sorry but does no one realize the outright freakiness of this we are having a discussion as to who can load a 600lb stone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And there is actual discussion that 3-4 guys could do it!!!! Blows my mind! I can't wait to see a 500+ in a run!

just out of curiosity what is the heaviest stone you have placed? high 4's? low 5's?

I think there should be an informal stone loading get together after this stone is poured and weighed!! If somebody could organize something like this in a month where there was not much other competition going on I think it would be great and I would certainly be a part of it. Part of the reason I say this is because I think the 600 lb stone is a possibility for several guys when fresh and primed up for a max stone load, but I think the chances of getting this stone in competition when fatigued from all the other events is very slim.

If this stone is the same diameter of the 555 "poundstone" which I think is 21.5", its just right for an all out max load. When I first learned of the Megastone, I initially was thinking this might be pushing the limit of human capacity and might not be possible for years to come but the more and more I think about it, I think we will see it loaded within a year from now! Next question, how high to call it an official load. I think at least 40" would be needed to call it officially loaded. 50" would be owning it!!

The original height used for records was 1.2 meters or 48". The Arnold height seemed to be about 46" though so I would say at least that high would be needed for a record. 40" and the tall guys just have to stand up and roll it on to the platform. 46-48" and everyone will need to actually lift it up and on to a platform.
