View Full Version : Isn't it time for a Strongman/Strongwoman Magazine?

I look everywhere for a magazine that covers only Strongman/Strongwoman events in the USA and worldwide ala "Muscle & Fitness."
I'm not talking about posted articles written for other magazines- I'm talking about a magazine just focusing on this sport.
There appears to have been an attempt in 2006 (ala Google) but nothing out there now.

I'm hoping that out there in the vast Internet someone knows a aspiring publisher- a 21st Century "Joe Weider" per se that would be interested in that venture- it's time has come in my opinion.
The magazine can feature main athletes, but also use freelance local-national writers and photographers to reduce publishing costs and to make the sport of Strongman take it's place on magazine racks with the mainstream fluff fitness rags.
This site demonstrates the quality level of freelance opinions and reports of the Strongman lifestyle~
I think it's time..
What say you?

There have been a couple attempts at a strongman/strongwoman magazine. It would be great if there was one. There just has to be someone willing to put the money and time towards it.

There hasn't been a lack of effort and money. John Beatty put A LOT of time and money into STRONG! Magazine. He did what no one else was willing to do, and it was a big risk. From what I understand (and I could be wrong on this) it folded up because it wasn't generating enough revenue from sales. But, I assure you that John put plenty of time and money into it.

John Beatty did a good job with Strong! Magazine but lost like $20,000 in the first year and had to shut it down. Maybe an online mag would do better.

I vote yes but contingent on it not becoming a muscle "skin mag" like alot of them are - jam packed with nearly naked photoshopped women hawking some sort of protein product or hanging off the arm or leg of the latest beefcake while gazing upwards adoringly.

Try 1-800-GYMSLUT.
I called that number just to see what company would pickup, and was greeted by the sound of a woman moaning. I quickly hung up, but will be on the lookout for any suspicious charges to my phone this month!

Yeah, John put forth A LOT of effort towards STRONG! but it just didn't sell. It's a damned shame to because I hear it was a good mag. It would need A LOT of initial exposure to succeed + great articles to make up for the possible absence of supplement ads.

Nick McKinless was gonna do a DVD magazine but something happened I guess. He still has his blog which has excellent articles written up and links and other stuff. http://beyondstrong.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/10/deadliftin.html
Then there was Strongman magazine that Gemma Magnusson and some others were trying to get out, but hit some political blackholes...
I'd say it could be done on an international level, but would require extensive amounts of up front work and organizing, not to mention money. As to whether a print, DVD, or web magazine would be better, who knows, each has there good and bad.
I still have my issues of Beatty's "Strong" magazine, that was really cool. He put a lot of money into t-shirts and hats and stuff too right Paul, or was that stuff through a hook up? They are part of my little collection of collectors items..
Probably what could work best is an online magazine, then to DVD, then to print...as the interest grows of course.

Maybe we could use the Muscle & Fitness template Joe Weider used to start his-
Or an E-Zine magazine with online subscription would work.
Frustrating........Everyone wants to be strong...why can't it be marketable?

As far as I know, John paid for all that stuff, just like his Fat Bastard Barbell clothing. I still have a couple issues, a STRONG! beanie, and a STRONG! t-shirt that says "Being strong is all that matters" on the back. I love that shirt!

Unfortunately strongman isn't popular enough among casual fans to warrant a magazine. Beatty's attempt was awesome but not enough interest to justify cost of publication. I thinkk contest promoters and the head of these feds should align themselves with powerlifting USA or some other mag to begin with and go from there.

Because there will be no disputing the hard work that would have to be put in:D People want a magazine that will spew stuff like "ADD 3" TO YOUR ARMS IN 10 WEEKS!!!" or "SIX PACK ABS IN ONLY 10 MINUTES A DAY!!!" to give them false hope and a bad program. Strongman isn't like that thank god and supplements don't matter nearly as much as the amount of time spent actually training and eating properly. All the 16yr old BB fans, the supplement companies and many publishers don't want to hear stuff like that. I talk to people all the time about strongman and the only questions they can muster are usually either about Pudz or nothing. Strongman may have grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years but apparently it's not big enough to warrant a mainstream magazine

A friend of mine and his gym is mentioned in the latest issue of Powerlifting USA and I can't even find a place around here that sells it anymore. However, they carry every bb'ing magazine known to man.

Magazines are obsolete now. An online magazine would be the way to go with articles and event coverage. mustseestrongman looks like it is headed in the right direction.

Well, I still like having the written information to refer to when I feel like referencing more or less current trends and events in the sport-
I suppose when the time is right there will be another attempt at some sort of online or written format.
