Published Sunday, March 30, 2008
A dog named Tony pulled more than a ton on Saturday to highlight the highly competitive Bentley Mall Weight Pull that wrapped up the Interior Freight Dog Association’s season on Saturday.
Competing in the 125-pound- and-over division, Tony pulled 2,090 pounds on a wheeled cart in 10.87 seconds to claim the top spot in his weight class.
Tony beat out Brutus (1,950 pounds), Homer (1,850) and Shinnok (1,850) for first place.
Wheeled carts were used on a bare and dry pack Saturday due to the lack of snow. The temperature ranged from 20-35 degrees during the competition.
More than 20 dogs and their handlers competed in the event that offered four weight classifications.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever owned by Kathy Olding of Tok, Journey won the 90-125-pound class by pulling 1,970 pounds faster than runner-up Trapper. Journey accomplished the pull in just 14.93 seconds and it took Trapper, 73.07 seconds. Bruiser finished third, pulling 1,370 pounds in 40.31 seconds.
The 60-90-pound crown went to Mini, who pulled 1,250 pounds in 10.09 seconds. Samson took second in 1,130 and Dakota was third at 890.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever owned by Juli Hermanns of Tok, Crazy Dayzee pulled a whopping 1,490 pounds to claim the Under 60-pound crown. Crazy Dayzee took 29 seconds to accomplish the remarkable feat. Kyra finished second in a battle with Thor and Shadow. All three dogs pulled 1,250 pounds. Kyra had a time of 17.41 seconds, followed by Thor in 41.12 and Shadow in 71.11.
