I just graduated from college, have a place to live with a big barn to train in. Only problem, I don't have any plates. I figure I am going to need 8 (45) and an assortment of others. I am in Ithaca, NY which is between Syracuse and Binghamton. I was wondering if anyone knew of any places that are either located in NY with decent prices so I could pick them up, or any sites that have good delivery deals and/or prices.
Like I said I just graduated, so money is tight, if anyone has any they already own and are looking to sell, I would be interested as well. Post on here or PM me if you have any suggestions.

Thanks a lot.

Except for used plates at a Play it Again Sports, the best deals tend to be at Dick's Sporting Goods when a 300 lb set goes on sale. Usually, they run a sale on plates at the same time.

If Dick's isn't an option, then New York Barbell in Elmira is a good bet for you. But, the prices on plates have skyrocketed lately. I paid 50 cents per pound for 45s and lighter and 60 cents per pound for my 100s from there last year and now they're 85 cents and $1 per pound respectively.

Also, check craigslist. These links are all in the Ithaca area. Some may be standard instead of Olympic (2nd link in particular), but the 3rd link has 45s for free. I've never seen standard 45s, but that doesn't mean they aren't. The first one is a good deal, but lacks 45s.

I got most of my free weights on craigslist. You can get plates, bars, etc., for next to nothing if you play your cards right.

I agree with the craigslist suggestion. I have over 1100 pounds in my basement, all used, and all from craigslist, and I paid less than $400 for it all.

Really, it just takes time. Keep looking and keep your eyes open and you will catch some good deals.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It appears craigslist seems to be the most promising place for cheap plates. I have sent out several emails and a few phone calls, and it seems I will have quite a collection in no time. thanks again.

If you want redneck bumpers like at WNY Strongest, let me know. I'll get a set ready for you, if you come out to train or compete.

Mike, I am planning on coming out to train again and compete, it was a great experience before. I will let you know if I need anything, it looks as though I may need a log made. But for alot of the (simpler)welding, luckily my brother has started taking welding vocational program at the local Boces. So I am hoping to put him to work.

Thanks again, for all the suggestions.

Tires that mount on bars. Just take a set of 5s or 10s and drill holes to match the lug pattern on scrap rims and tires. Bolt the plate on the rim and you're set. I'd make them for you, but its so easy, you'd be paying for nothing. If you have a drill press, its really easy.

Here's M-M's own pride and joy, Kristyn Vytlacil, doing a world record breaking axle clean and press using a set.

I got some standard trailer wheels with the white rims from TSC and Ironmind Bulldog II collars fit perfectly in the center hole so I had those welded in. They weigh 20# each and just use 25# plates from there. The overall height of the wheels were about 19".

I actually sold them since and bit the bullet on some bumper plates, but they served me well for a while.
