I've been having some sleep problems lately and I'm wondering if my mattress is one of the reasons. We bought it 7-8 years ago which may not be that long by industry standards but I've been putting 300+lbs on it for the past 4-5years. It wasn't a top end mattress when we bought it but it was still 2grand so I hoped I could get 10years out of it. I've flipped it at least once every year but it still doesn't feel quite right to me(this could be in my head) What I'm wondering is how often some of the bigger guys out there change their mattress? Also if anybody has any tips for getting better sleep or falling asleep faster I'm all ears.

After finally replacing our mattress with a tempurpedic last year, I realized how much I was cheating myself. I wake up less stiff and sore and I sleep much better. Yeah, it's a little hotter, but the ceiling fixes that OK.

That was my story right there. Went through 2 nice mattresses in 8-9 years. My advice- ditch spring mattresses completely. They don't design them around people over 200 lbs. The more I thought about it, an air mattress just made sense. I tried one of the Select Comforts in Aruba a couple of years ago. They're built for people up to 600 lbs., have adjustable firmness and support you right where you need it. A couple of Christmases ago, we decided to buy the lowest end model; think it's the 3000. The other ones were priced pretty ridiculously considering the only difference was a thicker pillow top. We figure that we'll just buy an aftermarket one off of Overstock for $50 if we ever want it. Long story short, I'm sleeping like a mo-fo now and it was the best investment ever.

X3 on the Tempurpedic. Best money I ever spent. I think ours is about 8 years old now, and my wife says my side is like a canyon (I don't think it is that bad, she is just giving me hell), but it is still very comfortable. Whenever I decide it is time for a new bed, I won't even look at anything but a Tempurpedic. I guess with the next one I will turn it every so often.

Plus, if that was $2kCDN 7 or 8 years ago you could get twice the mattress for the same price considering the exchange rate.

To the guys recommending tempurpedics ... I had heard that because theres so much give, and becasue you sort of sink into it, with the mattress forming around your body, that it's hard to have any "extracurricular activities" on/in the bed (that right there would be enough to make me not want to buy it.) Is that false?

That's what the dining room table is for, Kevin.

Seriously, you do have a point. From experience, there's no "bounce" back, so it is difficult to, um, develop a good rhythm.

it is a freakin sweet bed (temperpedic). solved alot of my low back issues. it is different trying to have sex in it though. since you sink you tend to not have much "bouce" or momentum of the bed moving. we still get the job done.

We've found that it's the transitions while joined at the hip that are next to impossible with the tempurpedic; once in a given extracurricular position, things seem to work pretty much as normal.

If anyone is a bit short on cash for a Therapudic, I've used one of the 4" pads below for a couple year. They are EXTREMELY comfortable. I'm around 230 and bottom out only a little at the hip. I don't have AC. They are a bit warmer in the summer, because you sink in, but It's better than sleeping on something else imo. I have mine on top a futon mattress on the floor....

I narrowed it to the sleep number and the tempurpedic. Went with the sleep number in California King size for the extra length. It is awesome.

The tempurpedic sits on a European Platform that they charge big bucks for. A sheet of three quarter inch plywood will work but it voids your warranty. They will stiffen up if a room is too cold.

I sleep on a near rock hard foam mattress (with foam egg boxes on top) which must cost 50 bucks or less. Does the job and besides I can't handle sinking into an ocean of springs or air.

Ryan, how is the surface on those? Do you sink in and then that's it, or are you able to move? I am trying to rephrase my earlier question without prying. Where is the emoticon for "absolutely mortified"?

Went out and bought a tempurpedic today. I also tried the sleep number but didn't like it. For me it felt too much like an air matress you sleep on while camping. I got the second firmest one they had because the firmest was a little too stiff for my wife, she didn't sink in very much. I was amazed that I sank down evenly but also deep enough that one pillow will be enough under my head which is unheard of for me. I get to try it out tonight hopefully it won't be too hot. Kevin from just rolling around on it movement does seem much more difficult.

This has been answered, but I'll give my 2 cents. If any mattress is going to stop you from "extracurricular activities" just hand over your man-card now, it has been revoked. :M:

Seriously though, I have had mine so long now I forgot all about that. It was definitely different at first, and a little more difficult, but you get used to it.

Matt - I hope you enjoy your new bed. I definitely think you made the right choice. I thought the same of the one Select Comfort (it was too old to be a sleep number) I have ever slept on, too much of an air mattress feel to it.
