WSM 2008: “Full Steam Ahead For Charleston!” by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2008 IronMind
IronMind had just received official word from TWI that the contract has been signed for World’s Strongest Man 2008.
A press release with more details will be following as soon as possible, but for now, here’s the vital message: ”Full steam ahead for Charleston!”
Finally we have some type of confirmation. Who's going? I hopefully will.

Myself and a couple of buddies are coming down from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada... but I don't know WV at all.
What is the closest major airport to fly in to?? Anyone?? Any help anyone can give would be awesome and greatly appreciated, and probably earn you a few beer when there! ;)

You've got the wrong idea, Stu. You can't fly into West Virginia. You've got to land in one of its surrounding states, then walk barefoot through the woods to get there.
Bring me back a couple college coaches, would you?

Heats will be 6 Sept til the 9th, final from the 12th to the 14th.
WV Governors office confirmed the dates yesterday, should be announced in the next few days. I emailed and asked them.

Barry I think you're right about that short runway thing but I've had shorter ones "Jackson, WY" thought the plane threw out parachutes in order to stop in time

I'll wait to book a hotel to see if there is some sort of host hotel or something, unless someone else has some recommendations on that already...
I'm assuming the events will be all over Charleston if not WV... probably have to see if we can get a rental car too, eh?

2008 World’s Strongest Man Contest: First Press Conference by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2008 IronMind
In a press conference featuring the mayor of Charleston, West Virginia, the 2008 World’s Strongest Man Contest was officially announced today.
Contest dates are September 6 - 14, and event locations will feature a combination of urban yet scenic settings, 2006 World’s Strongest Man winner Phil Pfister told IronMind today. “Charleston is the perfect-sized city to to host the World’s Strongest Man contest,” Pfister said, “and I am very happy to have it held in my hometown, both for the live contest and for the re-broadcast.”

Yeah, but it's 8,000 feet wide! Old pilot's joke...if you get it, great; if not, don't worry about it.

Damn- if only both the WSM pre lims and the finals were each one week later! I'll be competing in Charlotte Aug 30th. The evnts have now changed to more heavy static, with which my chances. Assuming I didn't win in Charlotte I was planning on doing Am Nats 2 weeks later in Utah Sept 13-14, too. I definitely want to see at least one of the WSM weekends in WV. Since Nats is the same weekend as WSM finals, that would mean as Barry said, going to watch the pre-lims (about a 7 hr drive each way for me). BUT if I'm doing Nats, I will want to train that whole week after Charlotte including the weekend between Charlotte and Nats, the same weekend as WSM prelims. Right now I'm mainly focusing on the Charlotte events, and even though some of the events overlap, I would definitely want to get a couple of good training event sessions for Nats in the weekend of Sept 6-7, which I wouldn't be able to do if I'm watching WSM prelims that weekend.
So I've got 3 choices, which will all cost me a big chunk of $:
-bag training the last weekend before Nats, go to see WSM pre lims, and still go to Nats.
-bag going to see any of the WSM and go to Am Nats
-bag going to Am Nats and go see either the WSm pre lims, the finals, or both.
Decisions, decisions. I wonder if this will be a one time deal for Charleston? I've got family about 3 hrs from there in VA.

So the heats are Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue, and the finals are Fri, Sat, Sun? Do we know this for sure, or is it possible that wsm jsut got permit to have events on those days and will decide whether to finish the heats on mon or tues, whether to start the finals on fri or sat at some later point?
I'm trying to decide whether to just stay in charleston wed and thur, or whether it's worth it to come back home to work for two days, whether amtrak's schedule will be able to get me down there, etc Decisions, decisions ... then again, complete info would help! :D

You shouldl rest anyway before Nats so why not rest at WSM and get pumped for NATS :marv:. If I didn't live a million hours away I'd be there, but our Nats is Sep 27th and I can't seing 2 flights in one month with work
