I know we're all glued to our computers over WSM, but there is another contest this weekend of import to many. For those going to Utah, let us know what's going on. And good luck to all!

Standing by...
Go Breck!
Tom Mutaffis
09-12-2008, 04:54 PM
I am out here right now, weather is beautiful and from what I hear it is a really cool venue as well.
So far I know that Breck, Jason Sparks, Donnie Rhodes, Steve Matheau, Matt Vallo, Gene Anderton, John Sullivan, and another LW Ty from New Mexico have all made weight and look strong. Haven't really seen any heavyweights walking around yet with the exception of Barry Perkins and another Tom from Maryland.
Rules meeting is at 7:15 Mountain time and the action kicks off tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
The contest t-shirts are cutoffs - heading to the gym right now to hit some arms on the bowflex (kidding).

Weather is awesome, like Tom said. Elliot made weight by a poo. I made the scale tilt. :EL:
Saw Callie, JJ, and Breck. Most of my evening was spent trying to find a place to get grub.
Feeling really good despite a hellish headache that I've had since the first flight.

Hey Josh, good luck to you, Elliot, Carlos, John and the rest of the Clearwater, FL crew!
I haven't seen you guys lately...Elliot has to be huge for him to get close on weight!
Get after it, and make sure that Elliot brings that Pro Card back to Florida!!

Some events have been changed slightly...
The farmers is now 280ish. Order for the first day is Yoke, Farmers, Tire, Log, Stone
On the second day the car deadlift is not the same weight for LW and HW but the LW's pull from 18" and the HW pull from 14" - should be fun. The press medley was also modified, keg was dropped and a barbell was added in, 275 for the LW and not sure for HW.
Time to go out and get it done... will update everything tonight.

Talked with Joshua a few minutes ago. Josh managed 4th on the Yoke. Mutaffis is having a great day and beat Hulse on the tire. Elliott Hulse has won 2 events and took a third on another. Carlos Blackman and John Nakovich are also doing very well. No word on our other Florida competitors as of yet.
Go Team Florida!

Just got off the phone with Tom M. Right now he's in 2nd place, not sure how many points down but tomorrow are some good events for him. Tom Kauffman is in 3rd place 1 point behind Tom M. and Elliot is in 4th place 17 points behind Tom Kauffman
Tomorrow is a press medley, side handled deadlift, and block load/truck push medley.
RJ is in 3rd place in the heavies

I believe erik Peterson is leading by 11 then there are only 3-4 points between 2nd and beekley in 7th.
Frickin great contest so far. Great weather and some tough guys.
Any tips for a popped calf other than wrapping/icing/anti-inflame?

It was a crazy 5 events in the heavies. Personally I sucked in the first three events. My farmers and Yoke were well off contest pr. Ryan Bracewell was awesome on the first three events and was in first by more than a few points. Mike Caruso dominated the press with 10 reps in 60 seconds! I actualy tied for 5th in the press - my best placing ever in the press at a platinum plus show and then won the stone for reps to finish the day on a good note.
HWs after day 1
Eric Peterson
David Hanson
Ryan Johnson
Mike Caruso
Ryan Bracewell
Andrew Palmer
Day three should be good - press medley, car dead, block carry truck push to decide a national championship

Has anyone ever won a pro card in less time? That is one of the sickest things I've heard of. Congrats John!
BTW, I do understand that John has a very amazing record as a national level thrower. But still.

Karl Gillingham's first strongman contest was nationals, which he won. That was before the whole pro-card system though.
Looking at my old emails, it looks like he first contacted Mike about strongman training on September 10th, 2007. One year later he wins amateur nationals. Pretty impressive.

Mike Caruso is pretty sure he was 3rd in the Heavies. James posting 4th up there was my mistake.
Apparently the heavies went -
Hanson
Peterson
Caruso
With a pretty close point spread.

Negative. Van did well at 2003 Nationals, but did not win(I was there to watch). He won his Pro Card at the SHow me Pro/am early to mid 2004, then Won PRO nationals in 04 at the GNC show of strength in ATL( was there also).

Some facts:
John Schuna won 3 of the 8 events, and got 2nd in two of them.
Mike Caruso won 3 of 8 events, and was the only person in heavies to win more than 1 event.
David Hansen won the heavies without winning a single event, which just goes to show how well rounded he is.
Tom Kaufmann won the 231s but got 2nd in Lightweights.

Sounds like everyone did very well.
It is too bad that out of all of those that qualify, probably half
don't even go to nationals. Looks like only one or so from MN made the trip.
I am pretty sure there was probably about 6 more that qualified.
Such is life though............... :EL:

Just got home from Utah... Here is the LW:
Pro Card: John Schuna
Overall:
1st - John Schuna
2nd - Tom Kaufman
3rd - Tom Mutaffis
4th - Elliot Hulse
5th - Matt Tyler
6th - Zack Nimms
7th - Jason Sparks
231 lbs Class (These were different than the overall, 200 lbs guys were a factor at this contest)
1st - Tom Kaufman
2nd - John Schuna
3rd - Elliot Hulse
4th - Tom Mutaffis
5th - Matt Tyler
200 lbs
1st - Gene Anderton
2nd - Matt Vallo
3rd - Donnie Rhodes
4th - Steve Matheau
5th - John Sullivan
175 lbs
1st - John Nakovich
The heavies were won by Hanson who took home his Pro Card, Peterson in 2nd. Caruso was in 3rd or 4th. Not too sure about weight classes but I know that Allen Colly was 2nd in the superheavies.

I could just be stupid, but I don't understand how the order changed from the overall and the 231 class for the top four spots, when they are the same four people in both.
Also, was there trophies for each weight class AND the overall? Meaning that some people got two?
Matthew White

How'd Palmer end up in the heavies?

This was due to a limited number of 231 lbs competitors and a very tough 200 lbs field (48 total competitors). For instance, if John placed lower than Tom in one event by 1 placing in the overall, and then Tom placed lower than John by 5 placings in the overall but 3 of those guys were 200 lbs then that could skew the results and create a different weight class winner from the overall winner.
Cash prizes for overall winners, Pro Cards and trophies for first place in the overall, and trophies for weight class winners.

How'd Palmer end up in the heavies?
I believe that he was top 7 after day one but sustained an injury and strained a calve muscle - day two was not very good for him with a zero on the deadlift but he stuck it out and finished the contest, even completing the block carry / truck push medley at the end.

Great job to all the competitors! I am really proud of my training partner Foster! Getting 3rd in the 265's at Nass Nationals at 19 isn't too bad! He learned a lot and got to see what the next step is like. Great Job! Brek did great as well, fierce competitor and lots of fun to watch! It was fun hanging around with you and Sarge! Sarge was running the athletes and it was war! Line up or get passed up! Big thanks to Van and the Hatfield family for putting on a great show! Thanks to Dione and Willie Wessels, Mike Johnston, Brad Dunn and all the other guys busting their tails to put on a great show.
