Thank you for that amazing video Matt. I was watching frame by frame and both Mariusz and Derek were virtually locked to put those stones up at the same time....freakin CRAZY :FF:

Did you Pudz slap Derek's back or was Pudz cheering on Poundstone?

Thats sooo heart breaking... I think derek tried to one time it and lost it!Great job Derek next year its all yours!!!!!!!! Looked like it to me too. I think it was alot closer than some realize. If you pause it 18-19 sec. in you can see that even though Derek got it to the platform sooner he had to readjust leaning the stone against the platform as opposed to Pudz loading in one clean motion. I guess we will never know who won if the stone had not been dropped.

Man what a freakin great battle! That's what strongman should be, the 2 best guys going head to head right to the end. Congrats to all the Americans in the finals for such a fantastic showing (4 out of the top 5 all American). Hopefully this is just the beginning of a nice long trend in American strongman.

damn, looked like poundstone just thought it was on the platform more then it was and took his hands off to push it on and it slipped.

If mariusz didn't slip in 2006 he would have 6 titles ... just saying ;)

Lol @ mariusz bouncing around after he won, he really earned it imo. Derek time is now, he's the future together with some of the other insane new superathletes.

Derek did an unreal job pushing Mariusz right to the end! If you've gotta come in second theres no shame doing it to a 5x WSM winner! Congrats on an unreal year Derek! :KD:

What an amazing battle... Great job by Pudz, detail decided about title. Pudz did it, he is WSM legend - 2002, 2003 - winner, 2004 - third (2 points to win), 2005 - winner, 2006 - runner up, 2007, 2008 - winner :)
Also unbelievable year for Derek Poundstone - runner up in Arnold Classic, Winner of Fortissimus and 2nd in WSM 2008.

I hope Pudz will not retiring, and we will see revenge on WSM 2009... in Poland :)

Congrats to Derek and Mariusz... luckily Derek (unlike Olympians) doesn't have to wait 4 more years for revenge!!!

I am not to familiar with the politics of IFSA, WSM, etc (or every strongman contest)... but I do want to see a contest with Mariusz, Zydrunas, and Derek, head to head!

Either way... amazing stuff and wish I had seen it!!!

If you look at the video, he did NOT slip; he just did not have the strength to get it any higher.

And if you look, Mariusza was in front until the lat stone. But look very closely and you will see what no one has mention, his calf strain, it made him shuffle, as he must have been in pain the whole time of the competition, it must have held him back quite a lot in this event and some other.

He took a good field with an injury, not bad.

actually, it didn't like like he needed to load it any higher...it looks like it was on the lip of the platform and it slipped off when he transitioned his hands to push it.

i'm pretty sure he had plenty of strength to lift it higher if necessary.

I don't know why there is so much debate as to why Derek slipped with the last stone. No one knows but Derek. Let's try not to be armchair quarterbacks and let's show Derek some respect by simply congratulating him on a stellar performance and waiting for his write-up.

I hope so, polish strongman community (fans and strongmen) really want it. Everything depends on Mariusz - if he decides to retire there is no chance, but if not he can organize it.

The forum will still exist. I'm sure Derek is not in the mood for sideline commentators right now, trying to analyze his peformance.

Like I said, only he knows why he slipped, and I'm sure it's eating him up right now.

Now if Derek posts his stone vid in the media section with the title "critique my technique please" then by all means, critique away. But, I don't foresee that happening.

lol how bout you look again, derek loaded the stone right after he missed it just fine, AFTER missing it! I dunno bout you but that sure as hell shows me he had plenty of strength to lift it, I know that when i miss a heavy stone like that the second time is twice as hard.

Its just like in any other sport at the top level, little mistakes hurt! pudz almost lost it this year with his slow lap on the second to last stone allowing derek to catch up with him on the last stone. Derek's mistake was larger and more costly. That is all.

He wasnt slapping on Derek.

He's standing behind Derek and slapping his hands on his thighs.. It just seems like he's slapping Derek because of the camera angle

edit: I guess he was slapping Derek, thats a weird thing to do in the middle of a stone load.

Great job Derek.

From my perspective, it looks as if Derek saw Mariusz was slightly ahead and he knew he didn't have time to lap it first, so he just tried to one time it. Obivously, he miss timed it, but it was an "all or nothing" attempt. Good decision on his part, because if he lapped it first the results would have been the same.

If Derek wasn't finished loading, that's kind of weird, isn't it?

It's normal for the finisher to cheer on the next guy, but slap him a few times to celebrate while he's trying to finish his run?

C'mon.

that was the most exciting finish to wsm i have ever seen!!! i wanna say congrats to all of those in the finals! you guys tore it up and did an amazing job! hats off to my boy dave o as well. man am i sooooo jealous! i cant wait for the day when i can hold one of those trophies on the podium. and i just wanna let you all know that dave is the most deserving of this. i have had the honor of training with dave ostlund many times, and everytime i learn something new. he trains so intelligently and truly does everything in life preparing for strongman. he is the prime example of how intelligence, dedication, and passion can and will take you to the top. we our all so proud of you!!!

and for mr poundstone. unbelievable!!!!! i know you didnt win the whole show, but bro you did awesome!!!! a lot of people dont realize how different the implements and equipment that we use at worlds truly are. and for you to come with in seconds of beating pudz on equipment that he has used for years and you have never used is such a great achievment. i know your disappointed you didnt win, your a true competitor, we're never satisfied till we win. but please know that we are all proud of you!

i think we can honestly say that poundstone is strongman mvp of this year. winning mohegan sun, 2nd at msg, 1st at fortissimus, 2nd at arnold and now 2nd at wsm. how many people can say they have beat pudz and big z in the same year, after they have become what they are!

once again, great job to everyone! wish i could have qualified for the finals and battled with you guys. but i promise, next year without missing the half the season. ill be right there with you guys!!!!!

Yes that's something that need to be remembered: Derek Poundstone is the strongman of the year.

He is the man everybody fear in a strongman contest, because they know he has no no-day. If you think you'll be first and your friend will be second, then you'll probably be second, caus' there's no way Derek finishes third anywhere, anytime.
He is the Rafael Nadal of strongman. But with both arms equally big, and I mean....kinda big.

Definitely agree about Dave O. He has become a true force - he was machine-like on the jeep deadlift and was top tier on every other event.

I don't know if anyone mentioned the rain shower we had right before Pudz and Derek went......I don't think they bothered to wipe down the platform. Derek slipped several times, but Derek will be on top for years to come.

I just got home from WV a few minutes ago and saw this thread. I'm not beating myself up too much. This was a tough break but Colin (the head Referee) asked Mariusz and I if we would like to load the stones in the rain or wait for it to clear up. Mariusz and I both said we were fine with the rain. The entire stone platform and stones were covered with a huge tarp as the WSM crew dried everything off on their hands and knees from underneath. Mariusz and I went under the tarp and checked each of our sides to make sure we were satisfied with their condition. We knew it would be slick and tough but didn't want to wait. We both slipped a ton but I know I'm a stronger stone loader so I figured this was to my advantage. I thought wrong. Look at my third stone load, my right foot slipped out from underneath me as the stone went up. This was my injured foot and ankle which sucked. This was a little hickup but I kept chugging along knowing I would catch Mariusz on the last stone. As I reached the last stone I though I cleared the lip as I tried to slip the stone onto the platform. The stones were fine but the plateforms were a bit slick. I misjudged the height, hit the lip and tried to push the stone on, oops. Wayne, if you think I just didn't have the strength to load the stone, I recomend you check out this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mjgvgdz4Yu4

Also, Mariusz did slap me on the shoulders which was a bit distracting while I was trying to load the 5th stone, again, but It was all good. I understand his excitement! I had an 11.5 point lead on third place before the stone load so I didn't have to load the 5th stone, I just wanted to. I guess this will make for great TV!!!

Kevin, I appreciate the words man! I'm not to bummed, I had a great competition and a great time in general. I agree with your sentiments about Dave O! He was the man to beat after day 1 and put forth a great performance!!

C'mon.

It isn't normal, but this isn't the first time something like this has happened. In Hungary I was doing the powerstairs and it was me and a Swedish guy against each other. He beat me by a split second then came running over the top of the thing and slapped me in the face in front of hundreds of people and a tv camera broadcasting to at least 8 countries out here. It was actually pretty funny when I saw it. I did get the last laugh though because I place 2 places higher overall.

Mariusz did what he said he would do right after last year's WSM. He made it, just as Lance did in the Tour de France. But he just can't retire if he wants to be considered as the greatest ever. Savickas stands in his way. And Derek deserves a re-match.
And there are questions unanswered . Why such a light overhead in a WSM final? Why wasn't there any grip-testing event such as the Farmer's ? Why wasn't there a squat event in the final ? And one can argue over the value of a car walk vs a more significant yoke event of some 900 lbs +. All arguments with regards to TV specifics do not prevail. Unless, of course, we all agree that it is, first and foremost, an entertainment show. I do not buy that. Strongman sport deserves better.

It is a tv show though. We would all love for it to be heavy, but a car walk and a wooden log look much cooler than shiny steel implements. People can relate more to the car and the log. They may have been on the lighter side, but it looks really cool.

Matt Schumann
09-15-2008, 09:30 PM
Personally I would like to see it heavier but thats just me. I thought the 308lb log clean and press each rep was a good choice though...

220lb first stone seems really to light though IMO

I'd like to see it taken at the approach of a live sporting event. Look at the turn out in WV. I've seen Am shows with huge crowds as well (milwaukee). I think a live showing would take the sport to the next level. Especially if they made it the social scene fighting has become.

I tend to agree. I can't see how you can have a strongman competition without a grip event, when grip feats were a HUGE part of old time strongmen.

I doubt it'll ever achieve the same status as other sports as a live event. Too much time between events, crowds get restless, etc. I doubt many (any?) of us could put on a decent performance at the pace that would be required to have it broadcast live. The only way I can think of that it might work would be to have people rotate through events similar to how they do in golf - competitors 1 and 2 start on log, 3 and 4 on yoke, 5 and 6 on stones, etc., then go through. Doing that, you lose the strategy factor.

That doesn't mean they have to take 3 months to air it - but live I just don't see happening.

I think the MSG fulfilled that role really well. Personally I think WSM should stay like it is, they've already made a great change by increasing some of the weights. Even though a 308log for CP for reps is not mind numbingly heavy, it's still a good feat to get 6ish reps and is harder than the lighter press-only log of recent WSMs.

They just needed Sumo wrestling this year, right Duggan? ;)

Maybe have 2 different events going on at the same time... Show one while the other is resetting...

I know that tere would be many kinks with that approach but maybe something that could possibly work.

Do you mean live, as in live on TV? I think watching strongman live on TV would be fantastic, but it takes WAAAAAYYYYY too long to put on a strongman competition. I love watching strongman live in person, but I do not think it would ever go over on LIVE TV. How many days did it take to run this contest? That is why it has to be edited and then cut way down and shown later. A football game only lasts about 3 hours, and that can be shown on TV. They can run ads during time outs and at halftime. But Strongman live on TV would be a week long marathon for the WSM and a couple days long marathon for the nationals. I don't think it would ever go over live on TV. It just takes too long and requires too much editing to be good entertainment.

Looks like there was a GREAT fan turnout in West Virginia. My thoughts are that it will remain an event that will never be shown live, but it would be nice if they could show it on TV quicker - I mean do we really have to wait from September to CHRISTMAS to watch it on TV???? Why not show it on ESPN like 2 weeks after the contest is over? And why not sell DVD's of the whole contest (edited for time and content of course but without skipping events as they do on the ESPN broadcast).

I would buy a DVD of the contest IF it was reasonably priced (like $14.99 or so).

Personally I would like to see it heavier but thats just me. I thought the 308lb log clean and press each rep was a good choice though...

220lb first stone seems really to light though IMO
Thank you....

I'd like to see it taken at the approach of a live sporting event. Look at the turn out in WV. I've seen Am shows with huge crowds as well (milwaukee). I think a live showing would take the sport to the next level. Especially if they made it the social scene fighting has become.

I with you. I think we have the fan base.

Derek you did a magnificent job at the WSM and deserved to win.
It,s a pitty but i hope that mariusz will not retire so you will have your rematch.

And you are the strongman of the year 2008.

They just needed Sumo wrestling this year, right Duggan? ;)
GAAAAAAAAAAAH! I kill you!

It looked to me that the way they had the stones set up there was the closest that TWI have ever come to actually making WSM a proper spectator sport. Maybe they're thinking of increasing the spectator friendliness of it in the future?

Again, it all comes down to the cost involved versus they potential profit.

I meant make it more about selling tickets and merch to a live audience. But of course it would have to be televised live still. It wouldn't be as tough as you are making it out to be. I have been to contests where the events and help are tearing down and setting up immediately after an event. Very little down time. But, even if there was 15 - 20 minutes of down time you could sell crazy amounts of ad time and fill remaining time in with highlights, stats, analysts, etc... Football fills in 15 minute half times no problem. You do two events per day with a 20 minute break in between, air it over 3 days. I think this wouldn't be such a challenge. Maybe try to align WSM and labor day weekend so you have a 3 day weekend to air it on.

that was the most exciting finish to wsm i have ever seen!!! i wanna say congrats to all of those in the finals! you guys tore it up and did an amazing job! hats off to my boy dave o as well. man am i sooooo jealous! i cant wait for the day when i can hold one of those trophies on the podium. and i just wanna let you all know that dave is the most deserving of this. i have had the honor of training with dave ostlund many times, and everytime i learn something new. he trains so intelligently and truly does everything in life preparing for strongman. he is the prime example of how intelligence, dedication, and passion can and will take you to the top. we our all so proud of you!!!

and for mr poundstone. unbelievable!!!!! i know you didnt win the whole show, but bro you did awesome!!!! a lot of people dont realize how different the implements and equipment that we use at worlds truly are. and for you to come with in seconds of beating pudz on equipment that he has used for years and you have never used is such a great achievment. i know your disappointed you didnt win, your a true competitor, we're never satisfied till we win. but please know that we are all proud of you!

i think we can honestly say that poundstone is strongman mvp of this year. winning mohegan sun, 2nd at msg, 1st at fortissimus, 2nd at arnold and now 2nd at wsm. how many people can say they have beat pudz and big z in the same year, after they have become what they are!

once again, great job to everyone! wish i could have qualified for the finals and battled with you guys. but i promise, next year without missing the half the season. ill be right there with you guys!!!!!

back to training.....

Just wanted to say something about this. First of all everything you said Kevin was perfectly put, no one could have said it better.

The reason I love this sport so much is the dedication from all the athletes, pro's and am's. His last line is the statement of our sport, "back to training.." Kevin's not taking any time off to get better and neither to most athletes. Get at it Kevin, I know he will get stronger this year for sure.

I have looked at three different videos, and at that moment in time you did NOT have enough strength to get/lift to stone higher and load it, that is quite plain. Not saying you did not have enough strength to load the stone on other times.

Also, Mariusz did slap me on the shoulders which was a bit distracting while I was trying to load the 5th stone, again, but It was all good. I understand his excitement! I am a huge Mariusz fan as you guess, but did not like him slapping your back, but as anyone would be so exited about winning their fifth WSM and making history. However as you said all was well.

What do you think about Mariusz winning and taking part with a strained calf, as you could really see this when he was doing the stones, looked more like a broken ankle, the strain and the bandage must have slowed him up in a lot of the events, wonder how much better and in front point wise he would have been without that.

It's pretty sick I think. You can always be fan of Mariusz without being quite caddish to his rivals.

Caddish? I wrote down what all can plainly see, there was no disrespect, I am entitled to speak my mind. He tried to get the stone up in one go and did not have the strength, that is more then plain.

caddish, have you not ever noticed this is a biased forum, lots keep saying things like; I hope pud does not mess the stones up, he will have no excuse, that meant they thought from the very start that pud was not going to win, and someone else was, there were lots of things said like this, they keep on and on about it, they counted their chickens before they hatched.

Not one person has stated how well pud did, and with a sprained calf, not one, and he did the whole comp like this. Then there was the power stairs, pud beat everyone by 14 points, but not one person said of this remarkable achievement, then there was hulk on the lifting of the stones, he obliterated all, but not much was said about that, as I said this forum is all one sided, it is not like that on some of the other forums this side of the pond.

Once I was doing powerstairs (250kg each) head to head facing a Polish athlete and he sat his implement where mine had to go at the top. I had to step up to the top, move his over, and then load mine on the final platform.

He bought me loads of beer and vodka that night though.

Hey Misha,

Derek posted on here that Puszianowski slapped him on his shoulders while he was lifting the stone.

Winner or not.. I think that doesn't give him the right to act like that..
Especially when your opponent is still doing the event..
This doesn't mean I don't respect the man..
