View Full Version : Odd Haugen is a lot more manly than you

True Story:
Odd told us that he got a big tooth pulled the other day...with NO anesthetics. Just to see what it would feel like. He is the most manly man ever. The doctor was hesitant but he just told her to PULL IT OUT and she did. He later commented, "Next time I have a tooth pulled...I will probably use anesthetics."
What a MAN.

I had severely impacted wisdom teeth pulled while I was wide awake. The doc said it was the toughest extraction he's done in 15 years of practice. Next time I get my wisdom teeth pulled I'm having em put me under...

I actually had anesthesia run out on me in the middle of a Root canal. I motioned to the doctor and he said "we're almost done anyway..." 20 minutes later and I had just about tore the arm off the chair. He realized his mistake.
Next time I'll pull his hand out of my mouth or bite him...

The Toughest Man Ever....Aron Ralston by far
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - With no water and as little hope of survival, Aspen mountaineer Aron Ralston, 27, used a pocketknife to cut off his own arm and free himself from a boulder weighing 800-1,000 pounds that fell and trapped him for five days in a remote desert canyon in eastern Utah.
Pinned in a 3-foot wide slot canyon near the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park south of Moab, Utah, Ralston cut through his own arm below the elbow Thursday morning, applying a tourniquet and administering first aid before rigging anchors and fixing a rope to rappel to the bottom of Blue John Canyon and hiking out to meet rescuers. Ralston had been hiking alone when the boulder fell and pinned his right arm as he was moving through the narrow slot last Saturday afternoon, according to information from the sheriff's offices in Emery and Wayne counties.
Ralston told rescuers that on Thursday morning he realized he would not survive unless he took drastic action. He had run out of water on Tuesday.
Search efforts that had begun Wednesday evening yielded no signs of the hiker until he walked out of the canyon with two other hikers at about 3 p.m. Thursday. Ralston was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital in Moab where he was stabilized before transport to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., for surgery.
The episode marked Ralston's second brush with death since February, when he was buried in an avalanche while backcountry skiing in the Colorado Rockies. Ralston, an avid outdoorsman who has climbed 49 of Colorado's 14,000-foot-plus mountains, was buried up to his neck in the avalanche, managing to dig himself out along with a completely buried skiing companion within 15 minutes.

I'd rather have a tooth pulled out while being awake over cutting off my own arm with only a pocket knife anyday, lol

I remember watching a two hour special on the story of Aron Ralston. The knife he used was extremely dull and only a few inches long. During the process, he passed out several times, due to the pain. He'd "come to", start cutting again, and pass out again.
I can't remember how much blood he lost. But, the doctors said the blood loss and deydration should have killed him. And imagine how many calories he burned while cutting his arm off after days without food and water, with his heart beating like crazy. He should have been dead. Much less, should he have been able to climb out, repel down a 75 foot cliff with one arm, and hike to find help.
Anyone who has the chance should read his book. It's the biggest testament of human will and grit that I've ever heard.

How about the guy a few years ago that saw his nephew get an arm taken off by a shark in FL, then (barehanded) grabbed the 9' shark, wrestled it to shore & shot it to death, then gutted it & got the kid's arm back.
The visual I got was some big redneck with a fishing pole in one hand & a PBR in the other watching the kids & getting drunk, seeing the attack & going "oh no you don't you s.o.b." then beating the shark into submission.
A relative of Schoonveld's, maybe??

It would help to be a little drunk to take on a shark, but that is extremely manly. But I don't know if he beats Aron Ralston in manliness.

When I was six years old I had a root canal done without anaesthetics because my dentist at the time "didn't believe in them". Six years later I was wondering why there were no surface cavities in that tooth, and it was hurting like hell. I went to another dentist and he took the filling out, found a cotton swab that last dentist had left in (six years prior), then proceded to tell me that it had caused all the roots in that tooth to die. I had each of the four roots drilled out, and now I have a gold tooth. :) Just thought I'd share a dentist horror sotry while we were on topic.
Oh yeah, and I hate going to the dentist now.

I was at the dentist getting a filling a few years ago. As the dentist was drilling, his hand slipped forward, and I could tell that the drill slipped off my tooth. The drill cut into my gum a little, and into the inside of my cheak, which I didn't know at the time.
Now, you'd think he would just play it off and keep going, so I don't get worried. Instead, he said the one phrase that NO dentist should say when he's drilling your teeth..."UH-OH"
Now, I don't know about you guys but, when a dentist is drilling my teeth and says "UH-OH", it tends to bother me just a litle bit!!!

I saw that special. It was very interesting. It was crazy what he did, but after watching the special I think that most of the people on the board, or at least many of us, would have done the same thing in his situation. By the time he cut his arm off he had been stuck for a long time and had tried everything; he had waited for as long as he could hoping someone would find him. Even drank his own piss to stay alive a little longer.
He did apply some sort of tourniquet before he started the process. He had to first break his own arm by prying his bodyweight against the rock under which he was stuck. As I recall he said he had long lost feeling in that arm because of the cut off of blood circulation. When he first stuck the knife into his arm it hissed with gasses coming out as his arm has already started to decay on his body. He said it was not too back cutting through the arm until he hit the main nerve in his arm and it felt like fire coming up through his body as he attempted to cut through it.
He finally freed himself and then had to repel down some pretty crazy terrain and then hike for a few miles. He was luckily picked up by some fellow hikers who called for a helicoptor as I recall.
A guy at my office wanted to get his teeth worked on without any drugs; changed his mind midway through....lol

I can understand that
I had a wee accident a few years ago...smashed a hole in my head right down to the skull (literally) and had to have 25 stitches accross my head. Id been drinking and the anesthetic had no effect!! In the doctors own words "(Ive hit you up with enough to put down a rhino, I cant give any more!"
Man when that needle hit a nerve.....the doc was the first to know! I had to be restrained!!!!!

I had my wisdom teeth pulled and was supposed to be put under but woke-up twice. Second time I woke up they had straped me down to the table; arms, legs, torso, the full deal. Apparently after that they hit me with so much sleepy juice I vomitted for two days.
So I'm not sure what's worse; the pain of extraction of the pain of vomitting after having four wisdom teeth pulled.

Root canals are one procedure that should never hurt as long as the medicine kicked in. You have to give it 15 minutes. If they do, then the dentist is not that good.

...I was about to have one of my front teeth drilled and the dentist put the needle into my gum in the front and slipped and the end of the needle came out in my nostril and the novacain ran out of my nose down my lip and into my mouth. So the assitant says something like "at least it ended up in his mouth" or something. I was not laughing!

I like this board a lot, and I will volunteer some personal info, lol....
After I graduated from college, I got to thinking maybe I should go and get some STD testing done, just to be on the safe side, I wasn't Wilt Chamberlain or anything, and I was always very very careful, but still, in this day and age it can be pretty foolish not to. So, I am thinking piss test and blood work, no sweat......so I get to the Dr's office and he gives me the test for Chlamydia, what they do is stick a big old Q-tip right in you know where, lol.....well, I never want to go through that again, and never want to be concerned that I should EVER need that test done again, and am proud to say that I will always be a 1 woman guy and only have sex in a relationship , when I am out and the opportunity arises to ''hook-up'' the thought of that Q-Tip flashes through my head and I bail, lol.

Wow that Chlamydia tests sucks. Not replying to anyone's post, but generally speaking being a one woman man is a good policy for anyone to follow...the trick to the effectiveness of that forumla is you have to find a female with the same philosophy, from which what I see at work on a nightly basis, can be quite difficult. I see lots of wives taking home more to their husbands than just a little sweat on their clothes from dancing, if you know what I mean.

I was actually refering to my observations from a part time gig on the weekends...where married men and women always seem to be the most out of hand, rowdy, and uninhibited. I can't imagine married life can be that bad that venting in that way is necessary!
Watching that vid got me pumped up for benching. It's really hard to imagine what 700+ feels like in your hands if youve never tried it before.
Damn shame that in strongman we judge upper body power by who can do the best ballerina (sp?) dance and dip under an overhead lift. :D No static strength tests at all....and strongman honors the squat and deadlift in almost every contest, but not the bench, I wonder why........

In that case, hitching a deadlift should not be allowed.
I've always thought anyway to get it up is what strongman is all about. Strict press kind of goes against that.

There have been contests in the past with a strict press event. It was the incline log press.
I think it would be cool to introduce some form of strict over head press to a comp.
i'm not one to ever make controversial posts but it's 6:35am, i can't sleep, and my shoulders are still sore from overhead pressing 4 days ago so...
after incorporating them into my training, i truly believe the strict standing overhead press (dead weight on chest, straight barbell, no leg drive or back bend whatsoever) is akin to a bucket of truth serum and about as popular. the weights you can handle super strict are rather humbling. however each little twist adds significantly more poundage...
if i press the weight straight out of a power clean i can do more
arch my back in the process i can do even more
get a little leg drive i can do a lot more
do a push press i can do a ton more
do a power jerk (dimas style, no split or deep knee bend) i can lock out whatever i can get under in time
add plenty more kilos if i can split jerk
though numbers would be less fancy, it would be interesting to see strict OHP incorporated somewhere. but sadly a lift so basic is probably a rarity even at odd lift contests.
i'll probably delete this when i wake up :BB:

Exactly! Thats part of the beauty of strongman. Get it locked out, get it over the line, load it. I dont care how, just do it and do it quickly.
