Here's a link to the story of Aron Ralston, the trapped hiker who cut off his arm with a dull 3" pocket knife to escape.

This MSNBC link has a short video clip that you can watch.

Here's a link to order his book. The first two links don't really do the story justice. If you read a more detailed account of him cutting his arm off, along with everything he went through before, during, and after, it'll change the way you think.

Honestly, I probably would have taken the knife to my throat after day 3 in that canyon.

I posted on the Odd thread about this; he is certainly courageous, but I think many in the face of death would do things like what he did. It took him many, many hours to come to the decision to cut his arm off

If I remember correctly, when he got to that last nerve in his arm, the one that shot a firey pain into his body, the knife wasn't even sharp enough to cut through it. He had to use a pair of pliers, and he said it was the worst pain he ever felt. He stuck a shirt in his mouth, bit down, pinched the nerve with his pliers, and pulled and twisted until the nerve finally snapped.

It still makes me cringe!

yeah I think that is right. Pretty crazy stuff. I guess it beats dying...

That guy was pretty crazy going out to the middle of nowhere to do extreme rock climing without telling anyone where he would be going or when he would be back.
