Website looks amazing - the media section pictures is cool as hell! I am just getting into HG, and I am confused with the weight for height... I thought you had to stand under the bar and throw it OH. I noticed your double spin for height, is this correct?

Don't join the heathens and spin! REAL MEN STAND!

Not that I'd call Craig anything but a real man lol.

Thanks for the compliments on the site. I'm working to try and make it nice.

In the USA there are basically two ways you can throw the weight for height. The stand (the "traditional" way) and the spin. I stand about 90% of the time, but somedays the "pop" just isn't there  My PR with the stand is 16'7", and my PR with the spin is 17' (the video). But i am much more consistent with the stand when i feel strong.

The double spin started as a joke. I was warming up, and had already had a lousy day. So in jest i double spun a warm up and it went high. I gave it a shot that day, and damn near cleared 18'. I have used it a few times since then, without the same success (16').

You gonna compete in a HG in '06?

Johnathan - i will stand a 17' just for you in '06 ;)

Thanks for the explanation... makes sense. When I threw in college, I had to different techniques for the discus (not quite as different as the two you have for the weight). When I didn't have much leg drive I would come over my toe (known as S. African style) to come in the ring, but when I was fresh and felt strong, I would get a complete rotation and drive in with the hips.

As for HG, I am trying to acquire some implements to practice some of the events. I have several shots and discus', but am in the process of getting a weight. I've messed around throwing my 56lbs KB for height and distance, but the handle is too big to get a good release. I threw the KB over football goal posts to see how my height was, and I was clearling it by 5+ feet pretty easily. I hope to compete in a couple in '06 and then increase from there.

Any tips for getting involved would be appreciated.

Id say the majority of the stone throws in HG are done S. African. Very rarely will you see a full spin. There are the occasional gliders, like myself.

Yea, the KB is tough to throw for distance. We threw a 35 KB as an extra event at a game i did this year. Interesting....

Feel free to hit me up for info, i can also point you in the right direction to buy weights if you want. I can probably give you the low down on most games....

Thanks for the offer Craig! I will definitely take you up on it if I have any questions. What is a good source for getting the weights/implements?

http://www.ancientathletics.com/orderform.htm (best price and great quality)

Tell Merl i sent you.

Also, if you buy weights, get the round handle, not the D handle. The D handle sucks.

For some reason the website comes up really small, I can't even read what it says.

The site came up just fine for me on Firefox. Is the 56lb weight they sell there also work for WOB or would I need to buy something different?

The website looks good Craig. I don't know if you remember, but we met at the MN highland games this past July. I was a helper there.

Hope everything is going well.

Glad to hear the site came up fine on firefox. I think the problem may be with some people not having all the flash goodies installed with firefox. Hope that's not to technical :BB:

Dave, yep i remember. I've also paid attention when people mention your name to see how you've done. Pretty damn well i see.... You should throw at MN next year.

That 56 will work for wob also, just have to move the clevis.

I can't get it to work with firefox, but IE works fine.

I want to go over 13 ft this year standing, I did 12 my first games when I was 17, so we'll see what I do at my second games.

Thanks for the other videos. Yeah 12 feet is pretty good for a first timer so I hear. I missed 9 feet twice, 10ft twice, 11ft twice, 12 once and then hit the bar on 13. Hopefully one day I'll get to a pro level.
