Hey all

Does anyone here own a personal training studio with a mainly athlete/competitive bodybuilder type clientelle? Ive got a few questions:

-how much money approximately did it take you to initially get started up
-did you feel the need to buy extra, less needed stuff, to make the facility appeal to more people?
-approx how much of your client-base is actually of an athletic/competitive nature (ie. did you end up with a tonne of old ladies and only a few athletes)

If you dont want to post any of this in public, I would really appreciate a PM. Also, any helpful links you have would be awsome.

Much appreciated,
Keenan

I don't remember exactly how much it cost to start mine up but I did have a lot of the equipment already. We had to buy dumbells, cardio equipment, mats, a computer, credit card machine, etc... I am pretty sure you can get a pretty good start for under $20,000 depending on what kind of space you are looking for and what the location is (ours was 1000 sq. ft. on a pretty big road).
We ended up working our asses off for some of the stuff we got. For instance, we bought out a Velocity and sold off most of the equipment but kept the 3 power racks, weights, bars, and a couple machines. It was a stupid amount of work but we got some great equipment out of the deal. These things can make your place great because you can offer some things no one else will. My guys love the logs, kegs, and general atmosphere of the gym but we keep it clean enough so that women won't be put off by it. Don't forget the women!!! They will be about 70% of your personal training demand.
Athletes with enough money for training are hard to find so I would recommend opening a place big enough to have members come and go as they please. Or maybe make a seperate area for them.

I agree with Travis 100%. If I had to rely on athletes or bodybuilders to pay the bills I would have never made it this far. Women and "old ladies" will pay 80% or more of your bills...
