Who is the best deadlifter in the world today? Opinions Please. Who is better than who?
I thought this would be fun to see what peoples responses would be.

Here's the list so Far: Not in Particular order.
Men:
-Andy Bolton
-Benedikt Magnusson
-Konstantin Konstantinovs
-Kevin Nee
-Wildauer Martin
-Derek Poundstone
-Savickas
-Misha Koklyaev
-Brad Gillingham
-Mark Felix
-Travis Ortmayer
-Glenn Ross
-Oli Thompson
-Brian Siders
-Oleksandr Pekanov
-Mariusz Pudzianowski

Woman:
-Becca Swanson
-Anneta Florchyk
-Amy Weisberger
-Priscilla Ribbic
-Jill Mills

I have to say I agree although I feel Magnusson will soon surpass Bolton's dead lift.

In my opinion

Andy Bolton
Bennie Mag
Konstaninov (sp?)
Kevin Nee/ Derek P.

No particular order though!

If Wildauer Martin keeps it up he'll be on the list in a few years.

If we define best as who can lift the most weight, it's Andy Bolton.

Does anyone know what the raw deadlift record is? Tibor Meszaros did 927 without a belt, which is pretty impressive.

Paul_Koskinen
11-30-2008, 08:49 PM
Benedikt Magnusson

Ashley Christopher Moore

VERY!!!!! suprised not to see Savickas on the top 5 list since he lifted over 900 raw without even wearing a belt in the world championships a while back
who knows what he would do know

Mark Henry? let's not forget about that freak
Gary Frank as well

As far as #1 goes obviously Bolton since he has lifted the most weight period

Raw vs. geared could be a discusion in it self allthough I am sure bolton would win raw too seeing as how deadlift suits don't add near as much as squat or bench shirts

I agree that Magnusson will pass Bolton's record soon and would have probably done this sooner if he wouldn't have left powerlifting so early

Kevin nee might be on his way to breaking the record as well in a few years

What would be a even more interesting question is who is the best pound for pound deadlifter in the world
Obviously Ricky Dale Crain would be on the list

By the way is this man woman or both?
Amy Weisberger is a heck of a lifter
Anneta Florchyk(not sure about the spelling)is great as well
she is a polish strongwoman,poweerlifter

I would put it between Misha and Gillingham for the best hook grip deadlift haha
that would be an awesome contest and we might even get to see some dislocated thumbs lol

Add Koklyaev Mikhail to the list.

Both Men and Woman. Who would win if there was a deadlift competition with all of the best these days, not from the past.

Is Ed Coan still competing?
no, he did the moutaineer cup about 4 yrs ago and still pulled 840 at 242 if i remember correctly.
Edit...he did uspf nationas last year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=632dLyvtqAU
He always pulled stronger with a sumo stance but a long-time injury kept him from being able to pull sumo for years. Of course before he was injured he pulled 900lbs at 220lbs. That's hard to fathom

Then I think either Magnusson or Bolton would pull the most weight hands down, no debate. That's an impressive list, but I think these are the only two guys good for 1,000.

Also . . . for the list, I would add Travis Ortmayer.

Given age and current PR's, I would say Bennie and Nee should be pretty high on that list. Bolton has lifted the most, but bennie has not been focused purely on powerlifting for a while. If he decided to quit strongman and just do powerlifting, he would break boltons record in a few years.

Bolton all the way. I was fortunate enough to be at that contest and was around 30 feet away from him when he pulled 1003. It was impressive to say the least

Alex Bromley

what about deadlift variations? Car deads? Deads for reps? Partial movements?

I rememeber an IFSA rerun from 2006 ( i think) where benedikt was outpulled on the 705 axel deadlift for reps.

John Schuna
12-01-2008, 10:01 AM
Making some considerations for bodyweight, Ed Coan's 901 pull has definitely gotta be one of the best ever.

Currently...... I think Konstantin Konstantinovs is perhaps the best deadlifter (again making considerations for bodyweight) - 948 lb pull at 275# bodyweight. That is a monster pull regardless of gear used or overall bodyweight (considering only 3 men have ever officially pulled that much - Bolton, Bennie, & Konstantin).

I think you're referring to the "Louis Cyr" deadlift. I know that in the past Big Z and Koklyaev outpulled Bennie on that particular event. Last year, I'm pretty sure that Koklyaev did 11 reps at 340 Kg (approx. 750#) in 1.5 minutes (?) in that event at the IFSA World Championships.

Just goes to show that a high deadlift may not necessarily translate into big DL for reps numbers.

As far DL for reps.....Gotta think that Koklyaev, Felix, and Big Z are perhaps top 3. Nee & Pudz also need mention as well.

even though he is not a 900+ deadlifter i think Mike tuchscherer should be on that list as well. i know he pulls 800+ pretty regularly and his form is probibly the best ive seen out of anyone. and he pulls them all raw.

WesleyInman
12-01-2008, 09:55 PM
Although I'd be inclined to choose Derek and Nee as they are amazing, and personal favorites..

Never have I seen anyone deadlift heavy with such ease as Mark Felix...he barely even tries... and his by far stands out to me the most. If he put in more effort, it'd be scary.
