Hi all,

Are any of you stronger double overhand then alt. grip?

I feel like double overhand is more natural and I feel im stronger then having my left hand over and right under? it feels like when I go up its not as smooth feeling?

I worked my way up to 445 double overhand, it went up very smooth in one motion. then rested about 3-4 min and went for 465 alt grip and could not barely get it off the ground?

does that seem odd?

I did do 3 other singles before this though, if that matters at all.

I find I have heaps more strength with a double overhand grip, if my grip doesn't run out on me.
Seems to line everything up better and make the movement much more comfortable than the reverse grip.

this is exactly what I feel about it. feels like double overhand lines everything up better.

If you can take the pain, just thumb lock. You will never drop the bar due to grip.

Nick,do you mean hook grip? Yeah, that's the most secure grip I ever had.

Nick believe it or not my back stops pulling before my grip gives out, with chalk.

It sounds like your extensors(top part of your forearm) are stronger than your flexors(bottom part of your forearm.) Using a double overhand grip your are more likely to hitch(which is fine if you're in strongman not powerlifting) and not too many people can lift a serious amount of weight while using the hook grip, but if it feels comfortable and you can
take the pain then do it. I find it harder to get into proper positioning during an overhand grip dead. On the other hand,if you're prone to bicep injuries then this might be your answer as it is safer on the bicep tendons.

All that being said do what suits you and rip the freaking weight through the floor. :BP:
Good luck man.

I usually use alt grip for all my warm up sets, until I get to 405. Now I use straps and pull overhand hook grip. This saves from bicep tears. I hate using straps but my pulls are stronger than my grip. I broke both bones in both wrists so my grip isn't where I would like it to be. If you can pull the weight with hook, you definitely should do so ! It is much safer on the biceps. Also I have developed my left rear delt more than the right which I feel is due to using the underhand grip on my left hand. Just food for thought for those who like to keep their physique symmetrical. Keep Pulling HARD Mark !

If im using straps, then my double overhand is stronger. Without straps, then my alt. is stronger. I would think that is how most ppl are.

Maybe its just my imagination, but I think the alt. grip is making the left side (alt grip side) of my traps bigger. I don't know if this is the cause of it though.

thanks guys. I will just keep at it.

I only do deads once every couple months, but I will be doing them more frequently now as I would like to get 500 soon.

I feel that will be a decent goal as I do not have a dead lift body really.

6'2" 205lbs 32 waist lol.

Mark, don't get to hung up on the body type thing. If you want a big dead, train it, if your back fails before your grip then work heavy goodmornings(not arched back),and a lot of stiff leg deads.

Doyle Kenady pulled 904 with short arms, Gary Heisey pulled 925 at 6'7", and the list goes on. I chose these two bcause of their extreme structural differences. Femur length, and torso length are considerations for a good or bad pull, but training intensity and a intelligent approach can, within reason overcome just about any structural disadvantage.

As far as over under vs. double overhand vs. straps?, I wouldn't get to hung up over any of that stuff. More developement on one side then the other?, news to me. If you prefer one grip over the other, use it. If you need straps for the extra work wear them.

Main thing is just get at it, you'll know what you need to do when the weight gets heavy, good luck.

I have never tried straps, the only time I would like them is heavy barbell shrugs.

thank you for the tips. my arms are actually pretty long so maybe thats a good thing!!

Mark, You look way more than 205 in the pic. But your arms do look pretty long. That is a definite advantage. I must say, since I have been concentrating on doing deadlifts for the past 6 months my back is way thicker !! I alternate goodmornings 1 week, deadlifts next week etc. I just started doing this, but I feel stronger already. Also concentrate on the glutes, hams and hips. I have been doing box squats and this also seems to give me a better drive at the bottom, and more lockout power as well. Good Luck ! I start my diet this weekend and will be dropping a few pounds but I still plan to attack my max dead at the end of this month. Should be interesting.
