I thought I would catch some flack for this but oh well. I figured it may help some people. I found that sugar scrub from Bath and Body Works is awesome for tacky removal. I was removing some tacky in the shower and ran out of baby oil and my wife had sugar scrub in there and I had to use it. Well it worked AWESOME! I haven't used it without water in the gym setting but can't imagine it will work worse. I would have to say that it works better than anything I have used. If I had to rank here it goes.
1.Sugar Scrub
2.Tie between mineral spirits and wd-40
3. Tie between baby oil and goo gone.

I wish the guys I trained with smelled like sun kissed honey dew and cucumber. :(
For my money, De-Solve-it works the best http://www.dtep.com/de-solve-it.htm Plus it doesn't smell like you are trying to burn yourself alive and it really doesn't hurt to get in any open cuts or scrapes.

Actually Easton, real men either just leave it on or set a match to it.

WD-40 is the absolute best solvent for tacky IMO.
