Alright, so in a nutshell, I got offered a deal. The good news, I get another school, "instructor school" and I will be instructing Cryogenics for the Navy, as they have run dry of people who are qualified and actually have run the equipment, rather than those who have learned a few scientific principals, but draw a blank when they see the power button. Anyway. Here's the BAD part. The school is in Norfolk, VA, and the job is in Portsmouth, VA. So I have to up and leave the Kitsap Crew and my home in Bremerton, and find a new crew and new place to live. As well as cross the US yet another time. This is great opportunity for me to seal my future career as either a chief or warrant officer in the navy. Instructor is one of those things that looks really good when I go up for rank and evals. This will happen in the May/June timeframe. To the Kitsap Crew, I may or may not take my 12 inch log, as for everything else, it is donated to you guys. The most upsetting part of making this decision was actually having to leave you guys (seriously). If anyone lives around the Portsmouth or Virginia Beach area send me a PM please.

Instuctor duty is good for getting promoted. Don't know if the Navy is going to the more well rounded person concept like the AF is but it should help anyway. Guess you plan on making it a career?

Congrats Matt! I work almost exclusively as a contractor to the Navy and know what a step up that is to instructor. Good luck with it and the move.

You are in luck though going to Norfolk/Portsmouth. Get in touch with the guys at Brute Strength gym in Norfolk.

As hardcore as it gets.
"Tire flipping, keg tossing, stone or keg loading, power stairs, conan's wheel, log lifting... For powerlifters and strength athletes, the equipment is from Forza. You can use bands and chains if you want. The power platform has a hydraulic squat rack and the Mono-lift...you will not find a leg extension, leg curl, thigh squeeze machine, or a chest press machine. You will not find machines.
If you are offended by men and women lifting heavy weights, grunting, the noise of the weights hitting the ground, the smell of sweat and blood, don't come to Brute Strength Gym."

Congrats on the career move, Matt. I learned a long time ago that "career enhancing" typically means "stuff nobody else really wants to do" but that isn't all bad. Really it just means that everyone has to do something tough in their career, and that you at least get a pat on the back for having done it.

I have spent a lot of time in the Norfolk area and think it is actually pretty nice, if you can land yourself in the right place. Like any city there are good and bad parts. If you are a Navy nut like me, you will enjoy hanging out at Virginia Beach and seeing flights of Super Hornets heading out to sea, or seeing the ships go in and out of port.

Base gyms there aren't too bad. Pretty standard, but at least when I was there you could deadlift and so on. I think my big complaint was that they had those octagonal plates, and those generally annoy me. Depending on where you live, the base gym at Little Creek Amphib base is by far the nicest, but that is because of all the marines on that base. Those guys spare no expenses where physical training is concerned. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were a few training groups in the area, but I don't know of any off hand.

Either way, best of luck to you. I've done the "big move" thing a few times in my Navy career and it is always an adventure.

"Adventure" is a good word for it! I've been to the area before but never been stationed there. It seemed like a good place for the ol motorcycle too! Definately will check out brute strength gym, if there is anything that they don't have that I want it sounds like the type of place that would let me store my stuff there. (like a new yoke or something)
