Well I thought I'd buy a new muscle magazine - just to see what they're like these days........to say I was unimpressed is an understatement.

I bought an issue of Muscular Develpment

A 450 page book that contained 261 pages of supplement ads, not to mention the numerous articles on more supplements and gimmicks.

*No nutrition articles on how to actually build muscle
*Several photo shoots with grown men making pouty faces and wearing make-up
*A photo shoot with a bodybuilder in his underwear and Spiderman (????)
*Page, after page, of gossip
*Not one article on training

What a difference compared to the magazines I used to buy back in 1996 or 97'

Absolute rubbish

I think we should start a campaign to boycott this garbage. These publications send a terrible image to our youth - one of vanity and drug-abuse.

I'd really like to see Milo and PL USA more readily available in today's marketplace.

I agree I used to rip out the ads for the gym I used to work in.... all in vain rofl. I wish there was a mag that had strongman and power lifting stuff, interviews, routines, nutrition maybe supplements that work! But yeah it would be nice to at least have access to PL USA and what not as well. I like were your coming from.

Theres a mag called Reps thats a little better, not much, but a little. I can't believe theres not a main stream powerlifting or strongman mag around.

john beatty tried to start one a couple years ago I haven't heard anything about it in awhile I imagine it flopped because we are a very small group of people that care about serious lifting most people want to drink the magic elixirs from the supplement ads and not do the work it takes to get strong or big or ripped

+ there is this thing called the internet that is making print media a dying form of media the only way to make a mag cost effective is to sell lots of advertising and usually the most ridiculous ads need the most repetitions to get people to believe them ie muscletech oops did i say that out loud :BB:

Well, there is always Milo. Not sure if you consider that a magazine, and you can't pick it up at the gas station, but when it comes to training that is useful, news about strongman, olympic lifting, even arm wrestling, I'm not sure you can beat it.

I bought one issue of REPS. Honestly, it was the best bodybuilding magazine I had ever seen, and I say that knowing the bar there is pretty darn low. The training articles were smart, the nutrition information was not an advertisement in disguise. It was definitely created to answer the fans that had enough of what you are describing.

The last muscle magazine I bought was Muscle Mag when it featured Derek Poundstone, only reason I bought it was for his article/interview. I paged through it on a couple different times and I thought it was worthless, otherwise I won't even consider buying them unless there is a powerlifter or strongman in there, but it's far and few between. I agree with you guys, the magazines aren't the same, 50-70% are supplement ads and they basically all say the same thing, where there product is the best and it's the miracle thing and will get you looking like some bodybuilder they featured.

Yes, John Beatty folded up Strong a couple of years ago.
It was a great mag with a ton of very useful information.

The most recent issue of Muscle and Fiction I bought actually had 36 pages of ads (included 2 half pages together) in the first 50 pages alone. Yeah. 350 pages of actual content, my ass.

MD is actually one of the few i make a point of reading every month. The research sections are gold. That said, there's only about 20-30 pages of it. So I don't ever actually buy it.

Does Pure Power magazine still exist? I bought a few issues online, but it was probably the most technical training publication I've ever seen and had little value to me as far as getting info I could use. Anyone who is extremely interested in excercise science and all the really technical aspects of lifting (more from a trainer's POV, rather than that of someone looking for a good program for themselves) could probably get a lot out of it, but I thought I was going to be getting something more MILO-esque, which it certainly wasn't.

You can't beat a copy of Flex!

Lots of adverts, a 2 page article on some 60 set, 20 rep routine and then a couple of pages on supplements and how they made you big and strong even while watching tv.

I wish I can buy a full year subscription to MILO...:(

Almost no ads, lots of useful training tips, lots of info. about past competition, info. about how they train back in the days, grip training, Olympic Weightlifting, strongman, powerlifters, create and train with weird implements, etc etc.

It is a little pricey, but it is money well spent.

I was recently looking through my early issues of Milo: GOLD. Great articles, stories, etc.
Today's mag's are a total joke, except for the bikini's...

before i looked past all that garbage, i used to read flex and ironman. Flex is good, if for nothing other than the nutrition sections. Ironman however, is pretty good. they have a column from john star, who wrote bigger stronger faster. They have had multiple sections on OLY lifting, and they always cover strongman events. I also have several issues with old time strongmen like bill pearl, chuck sipes, steve reeves, franco columbo and others.
