View Full Version : A Possible CURE For Knee Pain From Over Head Presses!!

I get severe patella pain in my knee when doing OH presses of any variety over 300lbs. I have found this is from the snap out and the IT band. After pondering, watching and praying I found what may be a solution to prevent the damage...

I took my Tommy Kono knee sleeve, put it on. Then I got duct tape (the heavy duty variety) and while my knee was slightly bent I did a reverse figure 8 (crossing over behind the knee). The top wrap around was about 2 inches above the knee cap and 2 inches below the knee cap. Several wraps later, and using only 1/2 of the width of the duct tape, I covered the wrap with another neoprene wrap.

Log C&P up to 380 today, no pain...

If this works for you all let me know...

Ah yes...there is SUPER POTENT HEALING POWER in the adhesive of duct tape, the mesh helps magnify the healing properties. :D

P.S.

I used the duct tape because I was out of athletic tape LOL!

I've seen these, but never tried one on. Does it limit the range of motion in lockout of the knee joint?

Here's product description:

This knee strap, dual action, offers additional help to painful, weakened knees. The strap puts pressure on the patellar tendon below the kneecap to stabilize and tighten the kneecap mechanism. It also helps strengthen the tendons and reduce kneecap dislocation. At the same time, the knee strap allows the user full mobility for everyday activity. Constructed from neoprene with a nylon⁄polyester fabric cover, this knee strap will apply dynamic force to aid in healing.

Not quite the same thing. What I am talking about is actually limiting the lockout (keeping the joint just slightly bent) with the tape. Of course I would love nothing more than reinventing a wheel with duct tape :D

Not really. Just gives you pressure where you need it; kills the pain, keeps everything nice and tight etc. You can wear them over your neos too.

Jay do you ever use a foam roller for the IT band???

I wish I was strong enough that I could lift enough weight over my head to hurt my knee.

It's cool. I get similar knee pain doing overheads. I have a pretty deep rebend, no real jerk. Hurts more in the catch at the bottom of the motion. Just making a suggestion.

Jay do you ever use a foam roller for the IT band???

Yes, and I have an ART guy that helped me out regularly by working it out. I am convinced my pain comes from the "snap" at the end of the motion, which aggravates the IT band

So if I duct tape my knee could I press 380 as well? :B:

I went through the same thing - the IT Band syndrome actually has a lot of info on the internet, but very little of it is useful.

I wrapped my knee in a similar fashion two weeks ago and came away with a torn meniscus after a log press - Doctor said it very well could have been caused by the additional wrapping around the knee. (before you blame the Dr, let me say he is a sports guy and is very knowledgeable about what I do)

So, just be careful about how you wrap the knee. Not trying to scare anyone, but thought some would like to know.

Scott - Yes. I am confident with a little duct tape you would easily hit 380. Often I take strips of duct tape and run them across my back and shoulders for the ergogenic aid it provides. However, I hear it has recently been added to the banned list by the IOC.

Jay - I have recently started having issues with this on my OH too. However, I find that tight sleeves or wraps over my knee sleeves (basically just pressure on the knee) helps keep the pain down. Interesting idea.

I partially tore my patellar tendon in my right knee when i had my wraps on real tight doing a squat PR.

Your absolutely right Ryan. Dave Ostlund & I have been using them for years. We liked them so much that we had them added to the Jackal's Store. A very good and relatively unknown piece of support equipment to own.

Are they used in place of sleeves and wraps, or with?

HAHAHA Athletic tape is good too, but duct tape seems to last me longer!!! Good find tho I don't have any knee problems but its always good to know tricks in treating and preventing injury.
