Yeah Jay, I'm a Tolkien buff, so I'll probabbly get it. "Children of Hurin" was a very good book, in a sad, jacked up, depressing, sort of way.

Yeah, but the story of Turambar is the best story in the Silmarillion. Seeing it expanded upon was terrific

Good call Mike, I'm about due to read the Silmarillion again but I think I want to read "Children of Hurin" again first. If I dig the books I have no problem reading them over. The Silmarillion was a little hard to follow the first time I read it, the second time was much easier. As far as this new book goes, It sounds like I'm going to have to read it a couple times anyway.

Someone stole my Silmarillion during my last underway in the Navy. Is there no honor amongst nerds? I was only like 2/3rds of the way through it too. I'll have to buy a new copy, I loved the stories and seeing the Middle Earth world fleshed out a bit more.

Yahoo... more Tolkien... don't know if you guys have ever used this... but I find this website (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/) a great place to "brush up" or explore.

I read Children of Hurin when it came out last year. It was depressing, but a good read. I'll probably pick this one up when it gets to the public libraries.

Hobbit would be my vote. By comparison the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trillogy are much easier reads than his other works. If this stuff doesn't expand your vocabulary, nothing will!

Corey, I agree with Andrew, The Hobbit is a pretty easy read but still probably one of my favorites. This will set the tone for the Lord of the Rings, then jump in to The Silmarillion, kind of a hard read the first time but explains alot about who's who and how everything got started. If you get through the Silmarillion jump into Children of Hurin. Ok Brother, you have your reading assignments, enjoy.

Now that's just to cool! Until today I was thinking of my self to be the only Strongman-Tolkien-Nerd...
Thank you guys!!! Now I know that I'm not alone!
I used the Silmarillion to get a better languagestyle for the English test for my a degree. Btw, Tulkas one of the valar in the Silmarillion seams to me pretty much like one of us ;)

I am reading The Silmarillion in German right now. It's way beyond my comprehension level, but it is making my German better.

@dcarroll: The Silmarillion unconventionally was the firs Tolkien book I read, then I ownd the LotR and devoured it and after that came the Hobbit. So I pretty much went the way backwards compared to most people. Now I own also the "children of Hurin" and "The unfinished tales of Númenor and Middle-earth"

That makes his image even more likable than it was bevor. I wished I would have had the chance to meet him.

Patrik, be sure to read the appendix in each book, man thats a load of more information, I probably enjoy that stuff as much as the books themselves.

Thanks for the homework assignment. I wrote it down and am excited to get started. Too bad it will probably take me years to get through this list as I am quite busy chasing after the little Hobbit that lives in my house.
As for the new book, I saw it for sale at a Target yesterday.

Good for you Corey, that little Hobbit's going to be grown before you know it. Mine are going to be 10 and 11 in June. Man I'll tell ya, I tried to quit feeding them and watering them and they still grow. Where's the time go ?
