Good to see a Uk guy doing some specific grip work....dont normally see it!
Do you find that the grippers improve your hold on the deadlift? I noticed it pretty heavily the other day!!
Andy Lidbury
01-09-2006, 12:43 PM
Cheers Scott. Can't really tell too much if my grips helping as i've only been doing real light Farmers and no holds at the ATM but i feel my grip is stronger in general day2day stuff and my forearms have really grown in the last month or two.
Last quick session before comp on Saturday.

Not feeling confident for Saturday, got a lot on my mind, plus not sure how i'm gonna do with the IFSA log, shit at the Walk of Pain and don't even know if i'll be able to do the Crusifix with my forearm injuries only partly healed.Heads just not in it these last couple of weeks either ,but there's no way i'm bailing out.Lets just hope when the adrenalin kicks in i'll suddenly 'fire up'.

Andy,
Before my last contest, I injured my back 3 weeks out from the contest date. Not only was I not able to train hard for those 3 weeks because of it, but I also didn't even fully recover until just a couple days before the contest. But, guess what... I hit a huge PR on DL that day.
Don't sweat the small stuff, or you'll just end up with an ulcer! I'm sure you'll do very well, and I'm looking forward to your post-contest write up.
Good luck!

not sure how i'm gonna do with the IFSA log.
Just remember dude, its only a steel log...theres nothing special or intimidating!
If its the diamtere you're worried about, its only a difference in technique more than anything else.
With a 8" or 10" log you can flick with your arms to change direction to your chest, with a 12"+ you're probably better off rowing it into the top of your gut and using your back to roll it up your chest!
Just remember to set your position and clean with as much power as you can, take a breath and ram that sodding thing into the air!!
You'll do fine mate, Im sure
Andy Lidbury
01-10-2006, 10:43 AM
Cheers Scott.I have used it once in a comp last year and the clean seemed a little easier but once under my chin i was walking all over the place trying to get my balance.
Picking one up at the comp for myself :marv: so i can get plenty of practice with it as i think there gonna be at most of the comps in the south this season.
This is me with it at last years Showlifting comp. Its a 13" log.
Andy Lidbury

Thanks to you all for you messages.
Well i had a great time competing at Colin's Mid-winter comp even though i placed 4th yet again!
First event 105kg IFSA spec log for reps.I got 2 reps and tried for 3 but could'nt get it.So different with these 13"diameter logs but i now own one so i'm sure to really improve now.
I placed joint 4th in the log.
Next event was 220kg deadlift for reps.Let me explain the rules first;Must wait for signal at top and bottom of each rep and bar must be lowered in a controled manner.
The best i have done in training is 7reps with one in the tank.I got to 9 reps and dug in to get 10 reps only then go and drop the bar on the way down(dont know why, maybe grip)looked at ref Oly Thompson who had to dissallow it.Really dug in to squeeze out one more.
With 10 reps i placed joint 2nd but i will put 11 reps down as my new P.B. Soooo happy with that.
Next event Walk of pain my worst event (as usual) walked 6 meters + turn more than i did at Englands.Think it was just over 30 meters in total so kind of a P.B.
Placed 6th or 7th in this.
Next event was Forward hold.Held on for just over 39 seconds and was'nt too happy with it.
Placed 3rd.
Last event i was really fired up for as i was gonna do a different technique to everyone else which really suited me but the rule was changed just b4 we started and was told it would'nt be allowed which to be honest gave me the hump but unfortunately the exellent piece of equipment Tom 'Viking Power' Jones had made, broke which was a real shame as he'd put so much effort into making it in the short time limit he was under.I did feel sorry for him.
Finnished 4th over all out of 9 which is the 3rd time now,but it was a great first comp of the year and a few PBs as well.
Funniest thing of the day was one athlete(Will you no who you are)Moonwalking off the deadlift board.
Most dramatic was one athletes shoulder joint disslocating during the Forward hold.
Some exellent performances from Open and U105kg men as well as the impressive women.
Photo's to follow.

I think you sould be very proud of your 4th place. The logs very amazing.
I did not know that someone ended up with a hurt shoulder in the forward hold, who was it?
Anyway, it was great to see you again and I might just take you up on your training offer one day!
Take care
Hanne

Finnally got a date for my spine injection ,February 3rd. So hopefully be able to try and hit my squat P.B.of 260kg again which i did in 2003 at some point this year.

I've always been slow with Farmers so since last week i've been working hard at it and am getting faster, but i think thats from the extra training of it.I would say my fitness is better though.
I've noticed that my pressing power has gone down a little today though Paul.

When i first got this i had a go and there's just no grip on the edge.So i put a strip of wood ,one on each side so when it lays down there is a small gap between floor and tyre where i can just get my fingers in when i push my shoulders against the tyre.I'm sure i'll get people knocking me for doing this but its better for me to get use to flipping this beast and possibly remove them after and try again without them.I've been told Sven 'Viking Power does this on a tyre he uses for comps in Norway.

Man, that tire is FAT! When you get down to start the flip, are you able to keep your chin above it and drive with your shoulders?
Andy Lidbury
02-15-2006, 01:03 PM
When i squat down to grab it i have to look up quite a bit and i always loose some skin/scab off my chin the next day.Still trying to use my shoulders Paul, its only the second session i've done with it.
Paul Neuhaus
02-15-2006, 01:20 PM
For only being your 2nd session, it looks like you're getting the hang of it. It's real tough to drive your shoulders though, if you can't keep your chin clearly above the tire. I have short arms as well, so the big fat tires can be a struggle.

Hey Mat,yeah not long mate ,2 national comps this year for me ,i'm really focusing on the U105s UKs and U105kg Britains.Come a place behind your mate Mr Lewis twice now in the last couple of comps.
As for the tyre, the bloke i spoke to who supply new earth mover tyre's said it was around 400kg,he said it was the same used at Britains and so on.Size 30.
You gonna get a training log going on here Mat?

Attempted the 400kg tyre but was too wet by then and could'nt grip it.
Good session today although i feel a bit shit at Strongman at the moment.Maybe its due to my weight loss,i don't know.I'm kind of taking a step backwards at the moment to get fitter and faster which is working but its all messing with my head a bit.

Andy,
Looks like a good workout to me. I used to get mad when I couldn't perform an event well in training, especially if I'd done it many times before. Now, I have a new philosophy. If I can't do a certain event well that day, I'll pick something else I can do and punish myself by training the heck out of it. For example.
Last weekend, I had a good yoke run, but I couldn't pick up 300lb farmers to save my life! So, I punished myself by flipping the 800lb tire until I almost collapsed. I ended up with 15 flips, for a 6 flip PR. This made me feel better about my performance on the FW that day.

Pleased with the 3 reps on the Back Squat tonight,i gave 110% on that 3rd rep and i only just got it out the 'Hole'.Took a few seconds before anything started to happen, nearlly bailed out.I'm aiming to get 6 reps in training by the time of UK's.This won't win it but i think it will give me good points (might be wrong). Really need to get a power rack when i've got the money.
