Nice to see your workouts Brian, it will good to see you and Eric's progress.
I do zerchers from time to time but just with a barbell bar, I might have to add that 2" axle in there, those look good that you did.
BrianKing
01-10-2006, 02:21 PM
The 2" axle is user friendly to the crooks of your arms. I also use a 2 3/8" axle. I am feeling really strong right now. My strength levels are slowly returning to where they were about a year ago. I am just trying not to get too overzealous and get injured.

Did you get injured last year? Thanks for posting your journal... I agree between your's and Eric's posts, they will be a good read.

Did you get injured last year? Thanks for posting your journal... I agree between your's and Eric's posts, they will be a good read.
Last June I was doing a demonstration w/ the 700lb tire. On the second rep, I tried to readjust my grip and all the weight of the tire transfered to my left arm. I ripped up a bunch of sheath but did'nt tear anything. That injury healed up within three weeks or so I thought. Four weeks later I was doing log cleans and my bracialradialis tendon popped. Back to back injuries on the same arm.
That is the main reason I am sandbagging on the log work. I am just taking my time.

Not bad considering everything else I had already done. I kinda felt it in my forearms and wrists but I think that is because I did Z-squats on Tuesday.

Nice job on the workout, that axle clean looks good. Which axle did you use?
BrianKing
01-12-2006, 11:35 AM
I used your Axle. I had'nt planned on doing any cleans, but after my last set of pulls the Axle kept staring at me so I said F**k IT and cleaned it.

Eric wanted to do log clean and presses and I did'nt. Shoulder was bothering me a bit. So I started with the Yoke and he did 12" Log C&P
Eric worked up to a 320x2. I think that is a PR for him. 350 is right around the corner
I did 615x60', 715x30', 815x25'. I have a Brute Stength yoke(pretty flimsy), so 800lbs feel more like a 1000lbs. Very good to train with though.
Farmers for distance 237lbx228', 237lbsx235'
327lb Husefelt Stone Eric did a run off 100' and 175'. I did two runs of 100' each
Atlas Stones 250, 265, 275, 310(Lapped)/265,275,310,325(lapped)/340/360almost. All loaded on 54" platform

Nice workout Brian... I have to ask is that Husefelt stone is one of my "tombstones for a midget" (Eric's name for it)? If so, you will never have a problem with a Hus. stone if you practice with that thing!
BrianKing
01-14-2006, 09:31 PM
Ya, I like it. I was surprised I did what I did on it. I am very bad at events like this. It is something I will continue to address until I am up to par with all the top pro competitors. I feel that by focusing on this problem, my performance in strongman will improve greatly.

Hey Brian.. perhaps you should Video tape your GPP and let us critigue your form... :D ( i'm sure the ex would appreciate it)

Warm-up
12" log clean&press (clean once) 264x5, 288x2, 304x1(PR). I think I had about 5 or 10 lbs left in me but I wanted to end on a good note.
700lb tire flip 3x5
Conans wheel 430x3, 520x2or3(?), 610x2
Stones 210(67"),230(61"),250&275(60"),310(54")/ 230(67"),250(61"),275&310(61"),340(54")/ 340,360,390(54") had 390 going and it slipped out of my arms
Felt pretty good. A little shaky on the presses from deloading all week but still a solid day. I am happy with the stones.
I got in a late nite GPP session so the soreness in my hips are worked out. I did'nt have to rely on the "stranger" nor my ex. A girl I met last week came over. I am riding the GPP gravy train right now. And Tully if you are reading this, I am sober.

Hey Brian... how do you do those stab ball one arm benchs. do you put your free hand on your hip?
The starting position is with both arms in lockout. I leave one arm in lockout while I press with the other arm for the prescribed reps.
The only thing on the ball is my head and upper back. I stay in a constant bridge position through out the excercise.

12" Log C&P worked up to 280 and missed 300 3 times. I wasn't to disappointed, considering I barely used any leg drive on 280. My knee felt OK but I still am not gonna do any jerks until it is pain free. Plus, I haven't touched the log in two weeks.
Tire flip 3x10 Eric flips I flip style. Holy hamstrings, I could tell I had'nt flipped a tire in a while
Yoke 230 180', 450 180', 630 180' (one sit down about 20sec). Very good cardio
Stones 67,61,54 plat 210,230,250,275,310,320(lapped)/320,340,377(lapped)
Eric finally got the 377 stone. I still have him beat though, cause it only took me two times to load it a few weeks ago. HeHeHe.

12" Log C&P 200,230,250 3 cleans/3presses each set. 265x2,285x1 press and 3 cleans. 300x1,310x1(very easy). Think I found a new technique for pressing the log today. Not gonna get into it because I want to test it out again. 310 was no problem and I pressed it about 3-4 weeks ago, but today it literally shot of my chest like a cannon.
FW 1.5" handles 165, 215,235125' w/turn, 285 65'
1.25 O2 tanks 325x40' w/ straps. All farmers felt like a ton today.
Stones 54" plat. 230,260,275x1/320,340(no),377(no)/320,340(no). Had no hip and leg drive today. They felt heavy as shit too. I think the heat got me a little. It was 85 degrees and with us training on pavement I think the temperature was relly closer to 100 degrees.
Overall not a bad day. I am really happy at log presses. I think where I haven't squatted or done any cleans for three weeks has effected my stone and farmers performance. Now that my knee is feeling better, I can start squatting again.

Man, I don't think anybody is truly ready for a show like Coy's. Like I was telling Eric, it is the typw of show that will equalize everybodies strengths and weaknesses. It is extra heavy, long distances, and fast.

Not gonna touch the log til Salina, and I will probably breeze thru some lite implements on Fri or Sat. I feel really strong right now and very confident.
Now let me tell you about Saturday nite. I finally got Hammer to go out FOR DRINKS!!! We started out at the Louisville Fire game where we proceeded to down three Whiskey's in about an hour. Hammer was power drinking his whiskey, which was easy for himn cause he was mixing it with coke, where as I was drinking it with water (Like A Real Man). After the game we proceeded to go to Fourth St. Live, where we continued on our quest towards drunkedness. There was a group girls having a bachleorette party and they would not leave us alone no matter how many times I said "That's all right, I don't want to suck for a buck." Finally, as Hammer and I were walking over to another bar, we ran into them again. I finally broke out a dollar and began pulling a piece of candy from the girls necklace. Well, the whiskey was telling me to bite and pull, instead of suck. I bit down, pulled and broke the girls candy necklace and candy fell every which way. Hammer, being the gentleman he is, told me to break out a five dollar bill to compensate for the candy. The girl not only said no to the offer but she also handed me back my dollar bill and proclaimed I had ruined her nite of fun and that I was an asshole. Hey, at least they quit messing with us. They were worse then a group of Hare Krishna in an airport selling pencils.

Jay, we have two chains hanging from the top of the power rack. There are handles on each chain that you grasp. When doing face pulls, i set the chains at about face level, exend my legs out in front of me, to where my arms are fully extended. I then pull myself up while keeping level with my ears. With these chains I also do abs, pushups, and bodweight lat work. The abs are performed in the same fashion as an ab wheel. The only difference being this is more intense.

5-14-06 MEET DAY
Had a good time. First show since last February and overall I had a pretty solid performance. I just need to polish up some things and improve on my log press. My training partner Hammer showed the hell up. He surprised himself on some of his performances Saturday(even though he won't say it).
Here is a run down on my and his performance.
LOG: Hammer 340 3rd, just missed 365. Me 310 2nd, just missed 320 3rd
DEADLIFT: Hammer 800. Me 900
POWER STAIR: Hammer 15.5ish. Me 19.5ish
FARMERS: Hammer 18.06. Me 19.25
STONES: Hammer 19.2ish. Me 31 sec. Hammer seems to think I ran the stones quicker, but I could have sworn it was 31 sec.
Anyway, if Hammer does'nt get his pro card at Coy's(I'll make sure that won't happen), then I think the 365 log press is his at my show July 15th. It will be a nice battle between him and Baier indeed.
I am finally glad that I was able to put faces with names and actually meet alot of you guys. Also, I think we are getting ready to get a new training partner in Brian Dermody. I think he is getting the assistant S&C job for U of L football. If this happens we will not only have a great group but also more toys to play with.

I just got done mowing my yard, where I think about alot of things as I trudge along, and I was going over the Kansas Strongman in my mind and some of the things that went on this last weekend. Eric and Shawn's "log war" for the record and all of you guys pressing over 300+ lbs. Very impressive. My screw up on the power stairs, the kid dropping the log backwards and about killing himself, Brian, Bob, Dean & others pulling 850-900 lbs on the silver dollar deadlift and many more memories that you always get at a meet. But then came that special moment that I knew I would always remember. Corndogs and mayonnaise.
We were sitting at Applebees the night before, talking about everyones trip to Salina, when Brian hit us with the "I had corndogs with mayo on them on the way down here" story. That was one different way to eat a corndog and you would have had to have been there to get the full enjoyment out of the story. It was even funnier as Eric sat and ate his "fifteen bowls" of salad the night before the contest.
So I got to thinking that after the 1st and 2nd place performances that Eric and Brian put on, maybe I was the one that had it all wrong by eating fish and rice and yams, etc. I now believe the meal of champions is corndogs with mayonnaise along with a big bowl of salad. LOUISVILLE POWER LIVES ON.

I'll give it a go... how many corndogs and how many salads per day...? :marv:

That's funny shit. When I pulled a corn dog out, eric just shook his head, but when he saw the mayo, he said "Dude, I can actually see you getting fatter." I just could'nt resist them though and they went really well with my chocolate milk and 2% white milk.
What's even funnier then this is the girl that was behind the counter. The day before we left, I went to Wal-Mart and bought this Redneck looking Chevy ball cap with a NASCAR logo on it. I bought it to spite some people at the place I work at (Lousiville Ford Plant). Anyway, I wore it on the way to Kansas. So as I am getting my corndogs, the girl behind the counter said she liked my hat and went into this whole deal about how she would like to find one with Colorado on it and how she wish she could find a hat like that that was within her budget. The hat only cost $10.00
As far as how many salads and corndogs it takes...That was probably the first corndog I have eaten in about six months or better. I like salads and actually had one at our first stop , but not for every meal, and definitely not as a main course. Eric, I think, is getting endorsed by Slim-Fast, as he consumes at least 2-3 cans after each Sat. training session.

How the hell does he maintain his weight eating salads and slurpin Slim fast? he must be closet eater... he probably has Ding-dong and Ho-Ho locker in the back of his closet....
AS for the girl behind the counter... If she bought that hat it would have 2 hours pay for her....hahaha
Tell me truth Brian... did ya slip her the corn-dog... and give the old Mayonaise ...hahhahahahha man I crack myself up... i have to stop this... i am supposed to be a professional..

Left the gym a little irate. Gym owner threw away my 2 and 3 boards and cleverly came up with the excuse that he gave them to some guy I know (BS!). He also said that doing board presses was bending the bar (BS!). I said "NO, heavy squats and deads are bending your bars." Oh well, I guess I am going to Lowes to get some lumber to make some more boards.

So let me get this right... he throws out the boards that belong to a 300+ pound strongman... and lies... what an idiot!
I had similar encounter... i explained to a gym owner that his bars were not power bars and would bend with any heavy weight... he said they wer power bars and tested to 1000 pounds... I preceded to to some rack deads around 500 and higher when the bar bent... showed it to the owner and he said it was a faulty bar... i bent 2 more that day before he finally believed me...
he also said that chalk would ruin the bars as well... there ought to be a law that you have to least have been to a gym.. to own one... frickin morons...

That's just it, Jay, this guy has been in the business for 20+ years and has competed in both bodybuilding and powerlifting. The thing is it is starting to get to a point where I feel a bit uncomfortable. One day it's me asking if it is okay to keep something in the gym and getting the okay to the next day him saying I have to get it out. Bullshit I tell ya. He is that guy that says he is going to do something (strongman, powerlifting, etc.), then the next day backs out. A "waffler" if you will. Right now I am just waiting for him to tell me that all the implements need to be gone. I can just sense it...The gym is starting to turn into a Fitness Center (Yuck). I will go out on a limb and say that within two months, we will be training at a storage facility, which is fine by me. I will say this, he did say I could use the boards if I keep them out of sight and don't leave them laying out for others to use, so I will give him that.

Staggered stones 230(70),250(67),275(57),310(57)(no load but got to plat.)x2. This is a difficult event mainly because of the height of the platforms. The carry isn't so bad but when you have to press those first two stones it takes it out of you.
This two day trainign isn't that bad. It will definitely help improve cardio and stamina. I am gonna do some specific cardio work during the week to help with carrying stones to the platform

Workouts are lookin good... Did you design your own plan?

Ya, I design my own w/o's. I don't really write out a program for several weeks because things can change such as days alotted to train, injury/soreness may occur, etc. I focus my training based on the upcoming show and building up weaknesses. I will continue the pin presses for a couple more weeks and then switch movements. My test will be on Saturdays when we do log presses. If I improve then good if not then back to the drawing board.
As far as the gym owner goes, he is okay, just a little wishy washy at times. He would be a good politician cause he talks out of both sides of his mouth. ANd yes my Rolling Thiunder pin is missing which sucks Donkey Balls.

Make sure you are re-gripping under the stone rather than over the stone... it makes shouldering it a lot easier. Hammer and I messed around with that about a year ago based off of something I read. It is hard taking it from the lap to the chest this way, but just pops right onto the shoulder. Like usual, Hammer took to this pretty quick.
BrianKing
05-29-2006, 07:48 PM
Ya, I kinda, sorta did that, but where I am not used to it I was a bit awkward. Once you get the stone onto your shoulder, it really isn't that bad. What killed us though, is we lost all of our tacky on the first stone. We were sweating like pigs and the tacky was like grease. Also it was hot as hell, which is a good thing, cause it will pay off come July 1st. I am really happy with this two day training system. What I have to do now is cut back my volume in the weightroom so I am not drained on event days.

Felt really good tonite, but on a side note I want to comment on something that has really irked me the past couple of days. My training partner and close friend, Eric Hammer, recently won his Pro-card this past weekend and I have been reading some of the posts on this board about the way he won it. It seems some people think he edged by and barely won and that it would be better if he had won by a landslide. Well, considering the fact that several people, including me, had to withdraw our names from the contest due to injury, it automatically became a close contest. It was pretty much a three man battle the whole show, so it would make sense that it would be a close contest. Winning by a landslide or barely eeking one out is still a win.
It seems like some people on this forum think it is okay to talk sh*t and pound their chests, even though they get their asses handed to them at each show they compete in. Kind of like saying I'll be here or I'll be there with my sword and viking hat and then totally sh*tting the bed.
Maybe I am just too soft spoken, but enough is enough. I think there is warm front coming in from Kentucky that is going to hit Wisconsin August 19, that will smother any Tornado's that may come thru.

Brian - that is one of the great things about Eric, he just lets his actions do the talking for him. He more than deserved that card.
Once again, way to go "Baby Boy".
p.s. glad to see things are healing up for you Brian.

WOW... I have to commend you for tellin it like it is... good for you.
Hammer is a strong guy and he seems like a smart guy... that is a dangerous combination. That means that he knows what it takes or will take to win a competiton. That is what makes Jesse Marunde so dangerous. It takes a lot more then just boastful claimas and chest pounding in this game.
Brian, I think your day will come soon as well. I wish I could make it tyo Wisconsin to see the Kentucky windstorm.. Good luck my friend.

Awsome post brother - I am hoping to send a warm front out from NY as well.
A win is a win and it is good to see people do their talking with an actual performance instead of words!!!

Thanks DJ, I am going to give the stones a try on Saturday and see how it feels. Right now, I am not worried about cleaning any weight on the log. My emphasis on that will be the pressing part of it. But last night I passed one test and passed. We will see what happens Saturday.
