View Full Version : I want to Put on Strongman Comp

As of today it's about 99% sure that I'm going to be involved with a local gym in Memphis, TN that wants to expand to include Strongman equipment and training. Once everything is hammered out I would like to put on an NAS Amateur Competition with the possibility of a Pro Expo to promote the gym. I know it's short notice but I was thinking about putting it on in the middle of January. With it being so soon after Christmas I was wondering if anybody in the areas around me would even consider competing around this time? I would try to have strongman equipment or cash for prizes. Also, I would like to try to have a novice division if 1) allowed and 2) I get enough interest. Finally most events will be inside the gym/warehouse so the weather should not be an issue. I will try to keep the weights heavy without making them stupid heavy.
I'm think about these events:
Log Press For reps
Farmers or Frame or Power Stairs
Fingal Fingers
Keg Toss
Stone Medley
any thoughts or interest would be awesome. -thanks

What gym? I might be interested in competing, but don't have equipment to train with. I live in Memphis and I'd definitly be interested in training at a gym with strongman equipment.

It's Crossfit Bartlett and should be open with Strongman Equipment in a month. I'll P.M. you in a couple of days when all the details are hammered out.

I HEART you back mi amigo! P.S. you were already on my list of dream team pro's that I would like to do the expo.

My suggestion is this:
Look to have a small show and make everything as good as quality as you can.
Make a list of your Strongman Friends that are withing "driving distance" and invited them to compete in an "open" division.
BJ, Wortham, Martin, Max Pippa, Jeromy Moore, Ernest, and a couple other strong guys that you KNOW.
Forget prize money...pay gas, stack them in hotels and look to get that sponsored somehow. Work to get a restaurant to sponsor them for a meal or three a day. Have a FUN show with events that they can do, have fun, and show off for the crowd!
Run a SHOW....not a contest.

Great advice.
Nick - I am driving distance and would come down as long as I don't have anything else going on that weekend.
There is a contest in Norfolk, VA in early January that I know a lot of the guys in the South Atlantic are going to do (it is a Southern Slam event); you may want to have it 1-2 weeks after the other contest.

dude, don't get involved with those crossfit guys in memphis, they're bad news...
If the timing works for me, I'm down. I'm looking for an excuse (that isn't a wedding) to come down to visit.
Oh, and I better have been on your dream team of amateurs...

If the timing works for me, I'm down.This. I don't mind going out of my way for a contest with unique events but I'm already doing a show later that month (Battle in the Barn) that's a haul and possibly another early in that month (Clash of the Titans).

Damn, I figured I'd be the only one doing the battle and then traveling to Memphis right after.

Seriously now...imagine 5 AM's and 5 Pro's...or whatever. Putting on a SHOW!
6-7 events, 3.5 hours, in your face excitement! Doing events that they are good at and are impressive to the crowd! Events where the people watching can see the sweat, blood, and feel the yells of every single athlete.
The kind of thing where when they are loading the stones over the yoke, the people in the audience can FEEL the stone hit the ground and wonder "how can they ever pick that thing up for reps?"
I'd bet if you could cover some expenses (via sponsors) that you could easily get some great strongmen to come and put on a show. Give out small awards but everyone walks away with the same cash (expenses).
I know that I'd LOVE to have been a Pro or Am and just had my expenses paid to compete at FUN SHOW somewhere!

If Barabas is coming out of semi retirement I wouldnt miss it for the world. Also, I have a training partner whose girlfreind lives in Memphis so Im sure he would be up for it as well. Although I'm probably not on anyones dream team.

Derek, just the fact that you know BARABAS and have trained with him puts you on a list of envious people in this world.

Nick,
My training partner, Ryan, and I would definitely be interested. I'm living in Little Rock now. We should set up a weekend that Ryan and I could come train with you and Ernest.

After talking to the owner of the gym he told me that he really wants to do a grand opening in December. That wont give me enough time to put on a contest. So for now I will try to do a Pro demo, but I will try to put on a show around april or so. That should give guys plenty of time to train and for me to get the word out. thanks for the feedback.
