My axle is really just a piece of 2" pipe, cut to 6'. I added clamps 18" in from the ends. this makes the pull a little harder. in theory a real axle should be eazier. Total weight is only 16lbs. unless otherwize noted I am only recording the weight on the bar.

Doug,
Do you have a car dead set up?? How are you doing it?? We might have to make the trip up from Galt/Elk Grove to have a go at that a couple of times before Clovis to see where we are at. Last week we just tried out the trap bar for some dl's to try and simulate the car.
Nice work by the way.
See ya

Mark The Gym I do my asst. work at has a Hammer dl machine. Talking with David concerning car deads, he said this was pretty close. The handles are at 18" and 14", you can also place your hand differently if you want to. David said you want to pull back, he kind of compared it to a leg Press?. I'm still getting used to it. The difference between 18" and 14" is quite drastic technique wize. Tommorrow I'm pulling at 14", I'll post after.
Jay nice to hear from you, sorry but I'm clueless about posting pictures on here. I'll check with my wife maybe she knows. See you in Covis, Doug

12Feg.Sun. Training in Richmond
Went to Richmond today to train with Jon Anderson and his group. Jon was resting his hamstring but was on hand to coach and give advice. Ricky went about 200' with 275lb farmers(no chalk), Fred was there getting ready for Clovis as well as Rob.Myself and a friend of Ricky's were the two light weights. I was happy to get a P.R. with 220lb farmers 100' in 14sec. Still have a way to go with my tires. I learned that basically I don't know how to properly clean an axle or log. This is where I learned a huge amount about wearing a belt, lapping, heaving, etc. Can't wait to train this week to practice. Got to try a 300lb stone several times, lapped it, actually had it moving, but that was it. Maybe next weekend. All I can say is that whole bunch was very helpful, and now that I know what to correct technique wize, I can't wait to get back in the garage.

19 Feb. Sun. Richmond Training
Went down to Richmond again today, Thanks to Jon, Ricky, and Dan for all their help. Concentrated on axle and log cleaning technique, huge progress made there. Farmers went pretty good, tire started off good but legs felt flat, even though it was cool and overcast I felt dehydrated. Was jazzed to get to stones, hamstrings kept cramping, still came away with alot of good stuff to use in my own training at home. Unfortunately I can't make it down there regulary for their Sun. sessions, still thought it was cool of Jon to invite me back.Doug

1 Apr competed in Clovis. Pulled an RV for the first time, lifted a car for the first time, 2" axle was disastrous, stones were fun got 280 missed 300, farmers went faster then in Tempe, tire needs alot of work. DelMar is 1 July, first event is axle, forty pounds heavier then Clovis. So, I'm going to DelMar and get that 400lb Gorrilla off my back. Right now I'm working on getting the inflamation down in my right elbow with alot of ice, aleve, and a little deep tissue. Other then sticking to my core training will step up event training when possible, oh yeah and drop some of this good livin around my waist. Doug

Doug,
I think we are now skipping Del Mar. Mick was originally planning on doing it, but I think he/we will try to gear up for the Nor Cal in Santa Cruz instead. It's a little closer for our families after just going to New Mexico. (Plus, he's talking about traveling again for the PFM Nationals and regular Nationals so...travel plans are getting expensive already.)
Good luck down there.

Hey Doug! Looking solid! Glad to see your doing Del Mar! We are skipping this one due to time commitments mainly. Which sucks I like competing against the FF. But me, Mark, Marilyn, Andrew, Matt, Chris and maybe a couple of others will be at NorCal.
I haven’t read your whole log but if your having trouble cleaning the axle you could try the "Carlson Clean". Mixed grip like a DL, pull hard and high, dip down while letting go of the supinated hand and catch it on the shoulder. Scary, I know. But it worked for Sven….
So where are you training at? Out in a field looks better than my court...
AND WHERE DID YOU GET THAT ANCHOR CHAIN?!?!?! That kicks ass!!!!

Thanks Mick, scroll up on my training log and you will see a couple picts of Matt and I lifting our Husafel. Besides the field, I train in my garage. Matt and Kenny hit Golds. As far as the nauticle links go, I bought them from a retired salmon fisherman. "The Field of Pain" is what Matt nicknamed the field. Last year I spread 350 yards of dirt and ran over it with my toyota corrolla, and walla, we have our field. As far as my axle clean goes, I was doing very well, then my elbow flared up bad again. The technique you described is pretty similar to what I'm doing now. To tell you the truth this is alot more fun, you know, get to go animal on it. Say hey to everyone.

Thanks Mark, I had a blast. Being from So. Cal originally, I was able to have a lot of family and friends there, that meant everything. Joe and the other freaks were awesome. As far as the Axle , no I did not do well at all. Big mistake was going into it cold. I got a shot Mon. and by Wed. I felt great, cleaned a very eazy 201 on the axle and was happy. I had made the discision to do light stretches and r.o.m. before my turn, to save the elbow. Big mistake. Look at the pictures it says everything, at the very least I should have warmed up to 185-205, oh well, another lesson learned. Farmers was a pr, even if I did'nt finish the drag. Carlift was fun but light. I think if it was heavier I could have picked up more points, still 17 reps was pretty cool. Stones were fun, even though I missed the 300 again(had it very close), I was able to throw the first 3 pretty eazy. At this point Willy tells me I'm in 4th overall, maybe top 3 is still possible. Dude, when they fired up that monster truck I felt a rush I had'nt felt in years, it was Freaking Awesome. My turn came to pull, and I gave it my best, unfortunately, not quite enough. 7th overall. Learned a great deal and made some new friends, now back to training. Thanks again for all your support, Doug

I got 290 today. Couldn’t quite get 300. But it’s the first time I've tried a max axle sine the last AZ contest.

First off I'd like to thank Chris for letting us try all the implements in Petaluma today, very cool indeed big man, thank you.
My plan was to try the shield, frame and block. my intercostals(10&11) felt tight so I decided to do very little today.
The shield was a kick, much eazier then a keg, the block was also fun(I did throw a temper tantrum after missing the 230lb block, no excuses, I should have been able to do it). Dane did get it overhead later.
The frame was ok, I would say eazy but I was quite tentative at first.
Good news is I can do these events with no warmup, now to get faster.
As usual it's always fun when you can get a bunch together, thank you again Chris. Dane, best of luck at Big Tony's, Keith, hope your tendonitis is better for Texas, Justin, give me a ring if you want some work on your elbows,Wayne, keep listening to Mick and Mark, you've made good gains since Mar. Matt, I will have an extra bottle of crunk juice for you at Petaluma(if you compete), Mick, Mark, QUIT!!!!! improving, Zaid good job.
Oh yeah, Chris, can't wait to see what other ideas you come up with. Thanks again, Doug

That's good! 1-2 weeks and you'll be in prime shape again by contest time. It's not like your going to struggle with the weights in this contest so just heal up.
Improving? Me? Well, I'd say I'm just trying to hang onto what I got! As usual my only goal is just finish each event. My knees are really starting to limit my performance - or maybe I should say limit my improvement. I gotta start doing more rehab/prehad work again....

Strong work as usual. Today, I had one of those days. Tried to leave work early to get to Galt. Got there, no energy, no drive, little pains acting up.....ahhhhh crud. Stopped, took day off.
Hey, do you really clean more w/ the axel?? than an oly bar?? Or is the oly bar a clean and the axel a continental??? Or did you just stop w/ the oly cleans just because.?
I am going to make sure I have my shoes and socks off when you do the axel dl so I can keep count

I know Chris is going to have a massage therapist at Petaluma but if you want me to do some deep tissue on you before the events(if you think it will help), let me know.
As far as my axles, yes they are continentals, rev grip to sternum then shoulders, then change grip.
Oly bars? pretty sad, my fault that my technique is so poor. I've been trying to improve my axles, until I have to lift heavy olys, just not motivated.
If you don't get feeling better this week Mark, maybe I can make a road trip. Take our last day with you guys, and work on you before or after. let me know. Doug

As far as training, I'll keep my yolk, farmers, frame, and anything else I do for distance at 200' for reps. Heavy days I'll go up to 100'. Overhead technique will be done regularly.
Time to trim the fat and get in shape, I told my wife I'll have a 34" waist by Christmas, she just smiles. Last time I had a waist that small was in 83' when I got out of the Corps, we'll see.

My training partner Matt is in i.c.u. right now. He is only 32 but there is problems with his colin, the good news is he got to the hospital in time, the other good news is that it is not related to training. The doctors did say they are seeing this sort of problem more and more with younger men, so anyone checking on my log, will you please keep him in your prayers. Thank you, Doug

I've been pretty busy with work lately, thats good but the softening of the hands isn't. Good side is the money, bad side is maintaining training without tearing up the hands.
Still doing my distance stuff although last Sat. decided to try 60' yokes, worked up to 564 with no belt, then went 653 x30' with a belt. That was cool seeing as I've never done that weight before.
Axle continentals still a work in progress, decided to practice the overhand grip, I think I like this better.

Thanks Josh, glad to hear your sqts are moving as well. When I was pl'ing we had a pretty simple plan, it consisted of progressing from hbars and no belt twice weekly to hvy singles with the whole circus on once a week and pqts x 5s one day a week.
Now that I'm doing strongman my focus is sqts once a week, while trying to push the other exercises and still be fresh for Sat. events. Thanks again, Doug

Stifflegs are going good, will stay with the overhand until I want to push.

This was the first time I ever pulled from 14", lots of fun. Didn't know quite what to expect so I took it slow. Since I used althread for my handle post, all I had to do was loosen up the nuts, and tap the handles down, tighten nuts back up and walla, I now have a 14" pull instead of 18".
With the max dead at Rob's and the carlift at David's, I shoukl be good to go.

I wanted three on my first set at 244 but I'm having trouble timing my knee bend with my press. The srength is there for more overhead, just a matter of getting my technique down. For the next three weeks I'll focus on singles for form then reps for work.

Forrest said it best "Stupid is what Stupid does". All along I've been saying if I can stay out of my own way, I should be ready for Concord.
Friday I was out running hills and trails with my boys for an hour and a half, should of know I was in trouble when the muscle cramps started shortly after getting home. Woke up several times in the middle of the night with severe cramping. Ate bananas, water , aleve, went back to bed.
My eight year old had make up little league tryouts at 9am, we got there at 8:30, they said come back at 10am. Justin, Wayne, Matt, and Zaid were coming over to train at 10. Tryouts went well and we were heading home about 10:30. So far I haven't eaten just had coffee.
When we get home the guys are finishing up 10"log work. Wayne has hit a pr and he's trying for more. After a couple trys I make some technique suggestions. Without warmups I decide to show him what I'm saying. As I clean the 235 log I start feeling cramps again. I don't say anything I just put it down and say I'm going in to change(added couple blobs of tiger baum on my back).
By the time I get out side the guys are up to 520 on the yoke. Everyone was looking strong so I jumped in. Then we went to 608, next jump 704, I added my belt here. On to Tire flips then frame carrys.
Since the 800 was out at the field we decided to work reps. Everyone looked fast here as well. My turn, pushed the tire over, got set to flip again and BAM!!!! I collapsed. My whole low back seized up, I couldn't move, I found my self lying back on the tire. Of course everyone wanted to know if I was ok, I had no clue what happened.
When I finally got up I asked Justin to put his thumbs in my back. I think what happened was the fasia in my low back with the dehydration became so inflamed it just shut down. I've been eating tons of bananas, lots of water, and staying up on the aleve as well as alot of stretching and ice.
I was expecting to hit some good numbers in Concord and I've been fortunate to received a great deal of coaching asst. from Rob M., TBS , the Freaks and others. It would be nice to finally show up and do something. We'll see, still have three weeks.

Ok, this was my first series since Aug. I tackyed up hands and arms, my only concern was to complete the series with no further tendon agrivation. When I got to the second 260 I felt a slight pull in my left arm, nothing big, just a little reminder to ere on the cautious side, added little more tacky and I was fine.
Two weeks till Concord, this is what I think. 10"Log should go ok, Yolk/tire medley shoud be solid yoke run, tire? depends on back, Deads, I don't care if I have to use a whole can of tiger balm, I want a good pull, keg/farmers/sled sure would be nice to finish, Stones still confident to load first four. Now we just have to wait and see.

Wrong! On the second set with 485 the 3rd rep felt easy, then right when I pushed hips in my back shut down again. This is pathetic, 10 days out is plenty of time to get some low weight volume in and still be recovered. Now it's back to ice, dmso, etc. Only good thing is starting weight is 405.

My plan was simple, add 10kg a week as long as I can then go back down with a small increase in poundage. I'm pulling all sets ,even warmups with a belt. When I've hit my top set, I take the belt off for 3x3 and slowly build up.
Next week, I think I'll stay with 507x3 and see if I can get three sets with it. Going down to Fresno the 29th so I want my back fresh not over worked.

Not sure of the weight of the keg, ea. set I added more dirt. really trying to get my quickness down on the kegs. Weight will go up each set if I can. Mick helped me with my axle technique Wed so I was trying to duplicate it today. The log is Mick's, it's 195 empty, I love this thing, little rusty on form but it's coming back. Conditioning has a ways to go.
Axles were a surprise, by now hands were shot.
Squatted, pressed axles out of the rack and did narrow bn Tues night. Everthing ached so I repeated the same workout Wed. By Thur. evrething felt better so I added weight on everything. Fri. I spent the day digging up tree trunks, good for the back, shoulders, and stamina.

Been along time since I've done any consistent sqt'ing, and boy does it show. Narrow bns about the same. I've got about seven weeks till Sac, plenty of time to get legs stronger. If I don't over do the narrows they'll be a good boost to my tricep strength.

Sorry I had to cut our phone call short...
Anyway - That is long slow work up in weight. I'm just wondering if you may be a little fatigued by the time you were at 230??

Thanks for your comments Mick, I don't know. I guess I was trying to go with the small jumps to focus on technique. I may have a chance to get out to the garage tonight. I'll post if it goes better. Thanks again for all the help Mick.

I've been having trouble with my hands tearing lately so I wasn't sure how my hands would hold up. 300 felt strong in the hands, the pick seemed to take about a day and a half. Just not there today, maybe later do p/stairs and log?

Heading to SacTown tommorrow for a training day, just wanted to get a little sqts and deads in. Decided to get back to squatting consistently again, only been a few workouts but the legs seem to be coming back pretty quick.

I haven't posted for a while, been very busy with my massage therapy bussiness, thats the good news, bad news is my hands are mush.
Couple things I've been doing are
220 continental on axle pretty consistently, still have 20 to go before SacTown
HBar up to 407, felt strong, widened out to about 14" stance
Hammer Dead machine
400x5
500x5
600x5
700x5
800x5, these felt good and strong, no belt or straps. I don't get to hung up on the poundage, when it feels good I'll add weight.
Got busy working on my strict presses again, these always seem to help. My log is still a little rusty, we'll see. My main goal is to nail the axle, this is my achilles.
