Just wondering if there's a basic template or methodology for how strongman competitors train. Training day splits, lifts used, etc.

I don't have any immediate plans on competing; just like the idea of going out back and picking up heavy stuff. Seems like a fun way to train.

Thanks,
Mike

seems like we all train differently. pretty standard to train events once a week on weekends and spend the weekdays in the gym squatting, pressing and doing back/arm work.

Official strongman training template
Step 1: Find heavy things
Step 2: Lift them
Step 3: Go to step 1

LOL, just screwing with you, no there is no real template.

Bob Jodoin and CJ Murphy wrote an article that you may be interested in:

It covers periodization of strongman training, gym training to complement etc. Not a template, but a good guide to get you started.

In the gym - squat, dead, clean, press, row, abs, grip, lower back stuff

For events - build your own, lift heavy awkward things, be creative

I like 2 days a week in the gym and one a week on events, but that's just me. Some guys do more, some less.

I use sort of a modified westside routine.I can train the overhead events on my upper days, and mix in events on the lower days. When the snow starts to melt here I may switch it up so that I can have 1 day set aside for just training the events

I do pretty much the same as Aaron. Odd Haugen has his modified westside routine posted on his website, http://www.oddhaugen.com/info/workout.htm
the only thing i change is that i do DE box squats with bands on saturday before my event training, leaving wednesday and friday for swimming (good recovery stuff)

Thanks for all the replies.

I like the idea of mixing in event stuff as main lifts on ME and DE days.
