A couple weeks ago I was doing zercher squats, and I got this weird pain in my middle-ish back on the left side. It wasn't bad so I didn't think anything of it. After that, I had no pain there.
Then, I went to start my new routine last saturday. First thing up was front squats. On my last set, I got that same pain and it was a little worse than last time, so I just stopped and didn't finish the other things I had planned for that day.
Then I said that I would just take the week off to rest it and start lifting again this monday. Back was feeling fine for a couple days, so tuesday afternoon I went outside with my sandbag to mess around because my back felt good. I was shoulding it, and loading it onto a platform that was like 3 - 4 feet high. Everything was fine. Then I lifted it to the crooks of my arms and was going to do some carry's like that. After a few steps I got the same pain in the same spot. Now wednesday morning, yesterday morning, and this morning my back is bothering me a lot in that spot. But the weird thing is, it's only for maybe an hour after I wake up, then my back is feeling perfectly fine again for the rest of the day.
Is that normal? I don't understand why it hurts sooo much when I first wake up, but then is fine after a little while.
Also, now I'm just afraid to do the front squats when I go back to the gym (only going if I feel like I am ok) because it seems that every time I put the weight in front of me in that position (front squat/zercher squat or that position) I hurt it.

You could have a rib out of place. I know this happens to me alot. Go to a chiro. and you should be fine after a couple of sessions.

Crap, now that I think about it, I get a weird pain in my ribs that is around the same area as the spot on my back sometimes when I turn in certain directions.
I have no insurance and can't really afford to go to a chiropractor right now :(

You could also try hunting around for a message therapist normally there just as good as a chiro but less expensive from the non-insured stand point.

Dude, you don't need insurance to go to a chiropractor. I have insurance NOW, but when I started seeing a chiro, I didn't have any. Lots of insurance plans (like mine) don't even cover chiropractic care.
GO TO A CHIRO!!! It's like 60-70 bucks for the first session and like 30-40 for each one after. I can NOT count the number of times that my chiro has saved me...putting my hips back into place, popping things, using ultrasound for my sprained ankle, realigning my back...the list goes on and on and on. If you give a crap about your back, go see the chiro, dude.

I was just having some low back troubles as well, went to the chiro, waded through his BS and shot him down on a couple of 'necessary' treatments, and got adjusted for $50 with some stretches to keep the problem away. Call around and try to find one that is not going to try and get you on the '5 times a week for 6 months and then we can we can see about 3' plan and you will thank yourslef when you are pain free. Also see if you can find one that does sports stuff too.

That's all they cost? I can afford that. For some reason I thought they were a couple hundred bucks a session. Thanks!

IMO, take a week off of heavy lifting and just stick to rehab-type lifting for the week.
I've had nothing but bad experiences with chiropracters.

But rehab exercises won't put the rib back in place....

well,
personally i don't believe in all that out of place mumbo-jumbo.
Outside of muscle tears and bone fractures your body will work itself out. You just have to give it the right combination of rest, food, and tender loving rehab.
I did a little experiment a little while ago(paid for by a friend!) to test out the validity of chiropractic practices. I went to 3 different chiropracters with ficticious made-up back pain 1 year ago and all of them came up with different reasons why i was having the pain. It was either my hip was out of place or the bones in my neck were out of place, or my hip was tilted and was putting pressure on my back....
Oh but this is the best one!!!! One guy said that my left leg was longer than my right leg! So he gave it a good tug(or should i call it adjustment?) then had his assistant do some bio-freeze/stim therapy and sent me on my way. Whats funny is they were all so sure of their diagnosis and when they adjusted me they had utter confidence that would fix my made up problem.
Train smart then hard, fuel your body, and do prehab/rehab whenever things aren't right.

Personally, Active release treatment for me a godsend... (www.activerelease.com) The newer chiros are not all about adjustments, there are many new techniques to fix soft tissue problems, impingements, help the healing process of tears or sprains, and break up adhesion in all the soft tissue. It does take a good chiro or PT to fix you up though, and therefore I think getting a rec from someone who has been to the person is always a good idea.

I feel the same way. ART work really helped me with my injury recovery. I do agree that its best to get a rec from someone else, or just test the waters a bit with different practitioners. It took me three tries to find someone that I was sastisfied with.
Another idea is to invest in a foam roller or a piece of PVC so you can do some self myofascial release. A few mins everyday can make a huge difference in your recovery time. And for a measly $15 or less, you cant go wrong.
