I am knew to the sport, but not new to training in general. I currently train 4-5x a week usually ME lower and Upper, and DE or repetition work lower and upper. I try to do some recovery stuff and stretch on my off days. I guess I was hoping to get some advice on when is one ready to compete, do they have contests with impliments of beginner type weights. I'm sure that sounds corny but I would love to get started competeing without being crushed. My current bests are Squat 315, Bench 260, front press 175, power clean 235. This is at 190lb and 23yrs old. Any advice on getting started is welcome and appreciated.

i know they have such things as novice divisions at some competitions. they use lighter weights for people who are completely new to the sport.

I jumped right in to "platinum" level show my first time having never touched any strongman implements. i was like...ok farmers walk 250 a piece... well i have 130 lb dumbells....
i thought stones were the coolest thing in the world when i did them, despite bleeding so much that paramedics rushed me after i finished.

i placed 8th, which is pretty good considering my lack of experience.

that little story was to show you it can be done. the best way to know if you like it is to show up and bust your butt. if you do, people will help you get better. you are only gonna get stronger and better at the events. i love this sport.

Find someone that has event equipment in your area and see about getting with them for at least a few training sessions.Take Dane up on his offer for information on making implements too.You dont always need a bunch of expensive equipment to be a good competitor.Im not a highly ranked competitor, but Ive done quite well with just 3 atlas stones, some field stones(free),farmers,a log, axle, yoke, tire(free) and a few other things Ive rigged up.Stick around the forum and take in all of the information you can

Don't worry about getting crushed in your first show. My second show ever was the Snowman contest, and it was brutally heavy. I took last, but I had fun, learned alot, and PR'd on every event.. That's all that matters.

What are some typical weights of impliments, do they vary between the Lightweight and heavywt. classes?

http://nastrongman.com/contestinfo/upcomingcontests.htm

that's the nas inc. webpage for upcoming contests. if you check out some of the online entry forms, they will show which events and weights to be used. you can check for a comp in your area too.

I've decided to do atleast one strongman show this summer. After all these years of powerlifting I need to try something esle and this sounds like alot of fun. I've found one free tire for sure and possibly two. Another buddy of mine has some of the other implements to train with. Hey James, I need to get in touch with you. I also live in the GR area.
