View Full Version : What do you do for fun besides lifting?

what does everyone else do for fun or hobbies instead of strongman and lifting? figure this would be a fun topic for people to read.

I do alot of offroading in my truck when i need a day away from school and the city i also spend alot of time out on the lakes fishing for bass, trout, and catfish!. For hobbies i got countless numbers but my most expensive is my fish. I have 5 fish tanks some have rare live plants and fish in them and others are simple normal fish and plants. along with the best equipment. Its like my little peacefull world inside them. that i can come home to when im dead tired from working out or stressed from school and just stare at them They range in size from 50gal all the way down to 1gallon. Once i get a place of my own I plan on a 1000-5000gal i can swim in! LOL! also looking to turn a pool into a pond with bass in it for fishing someday LOL!

Im also a movie junkie I perfer the good B movie, over the larger movies. Some of the best movies ever made were low budget craptaculars!

thats bout all i do, other then the basic stuff.

THis stuff keeps me sane while trying to deal with all the crap life throws at ya!
SO lets hear what everyone else does!

I am into agressive in-line skating (stairs, rails, tricks, jumps, no vert though).

I also play table tennis (NOT ping-pong). I used to play in Poland and in the US I used to compete back in high school for about 4 years, so I'd like to think I'm pretty good.

From time to time I also play pool.

Non-physical, I love reading: Dan Brown (his earlier work, before he wrote "The DaVinci Code" and everybody jumped on the band wagon), Dean Koontz (anything of his), J K Rowling (yes, I read Harry Potter). Also if I feel like enriching my point of view I venture into Social Studies: Generation S.L.U.T (Sexually Liberated Urban Teens, parents out there should read that one) and Wonderland are amongst my favorites.

Spending time with my S.O.

Oh yeah, and I ocasionally LIFT heavy things...:M:

My 19 month old daughter keeps me busy most of the time but I am desperately trying to learn to play guitar ( I love rockabilly, '80's metal, Johnny Cash).

Other than the guitar lessons and the gym I'm just doing the daddy thing. All other interest are on hold for a few years.....lol

Is alcoholism a hobby?

Just kidding.

Between 15/ch per semester of school, getting admitted into Honors, going through the mortgage/homebuying process, a sprinting 19-month-old son, and daily training for two competitions (that I consider my only doorways to Nats this year) coming up, I don't have time for too much. On the weekends I take my family to the zoo. I used to play WoW, but once I got to the highest levels a character can get to, it lost it's luster for me (if anyone wants to buy a level 60 dwarf pally on a PvP server, lemme know). I have farted around w/Doom 3 and Quake 4 - both of which are practically identical... but unfortunately my PC doesn't have the horsepower for any of the newer FPS games like Chronicles of Riddick (which I have heard is awesome).

Huge bowling fan (used to average 180, before my ankle injury and took 4 months off)

Umm, aren't we all internet geeks?

I'll admit I'm a TV junkie as well. Law and Order SVU, CSI's, a few MTV reality shows, HBO Originals - Entourage, OZ, Sopranos, The Ali G Show

Planning my next days workout even if I already know what it's gonna be is still fun

Going to the movie - by the way Inside Man with Denzel is the best movie I've seen in months!

Every blue moon we'll go down to Fun Station and do go carts, put put, water boats, and the batting cage...good times

One of my new years resolutions was to either learn how to golf (break 100 :)) or learn how to snatch...maybe I'll start both soon...either way, FUN stuff in my opinion

In one of our strip malls we have a Best Buy and a Borders bookstore...I love hanging down there for an hour just looking around at flat screens and reading magazines.

My favorite hobies are being a dad and husband. After that I read alot, mainly sci-fi/fantasy and computer manuals.

....Non-physical, I love reading: Dan Brown (his earlier work, before he wrote "The DaVinci Code" and everybody jumped on the band wagon....

Which ones have you read? I really liked angels and demons and thought that digital fortress was ok, but I think I went in with too high expectations, being a bit-head and all.

Aside from work and school, I train a lot in Kyokushin Karate, a tough full-contact style that emphasizes sparring without any protective gear. I'm also recently getting interested in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), so soon I'll be swinging longswords, rapiers, polearms, and battle-axes in my backyard and whupping on my friends with wooden training weapons.

Then the usual: watching movies (cheesy martial arts flicks the most), reading, chasing girls, that whole thing

For me i work my normal 8 hour shift, go home eat dinner, then go to the gym for 2 hours and then go home shower. Then i go back to work for another 6 hours. By now it's 2 a.m. Then i get up at 6a.m. and repeat. Once in awhile i'll get to go to the ranch and to some fishing.

Playing video games, (Ghost Recon - Advanced Warfighter currently) , Ninja Gaiden and Grand Theft Auto are my favorite to play. Like to tinker around the house with stuff. Big news junkie and reality show junkie. Like hanging around my girlfriend and cat. Like to think about crap I'll do someday.

Training is pretty much my fun/hobby. That's probably why I stink up the place, I don't take it serious enough!!

I do, like Josh, like to imbibe in the occasional adult beverage. I am also lucky enough to take a lot of short trips with either my family (Disneyland, Monterey Aquarium etc with kids, Carmel, b&b's, Las Vegas w/o kids), and friends (Vegas, Scottsdale for spring training every year, Tahoe etc).

I am also lucky enough to have fun every day I go to work, hanging out w/ my buddies and acting like a little kid.

Other than that, all my hobby/fun/free time is spent with these two:

see ya

I'd say that rugby is a hobby, but I spend just as much time with that as I do with strongman/training, so I don't know.

Regardless, when I'm not lifting relatively heavy stuff or bashing other peoples brains out, the little time I have left is spent either fishing (especially ice fishing) or duck, goose, pheasant, or raccoon hunting.

My degree is in history with anthropology & sociology minors, and even though my job has absolutely nothing to do with any of them, I still read books on those subjects like a focused college student. I also read a lot of economics and physics books.

Other than that, I'm a huge racing fan and I love watching racing and collecting die cast cars. Those little buggers are expensive.

Any and everything with my boys (ages 12 and 9). We play lots of basketball and football. I'm the neighborhood athletic dad, LOL!!! Everytime the kids want to play something, they come and get me. I have a lot of fun playing. I guess it's cool to have a former pro athlete and strongman in the neighborhood. We also do a lot of outdoor activities like camping, fishing, hunting, etc. I do have a 15yr old daughter but she and my wife spend most of their time shopping...LOL!!!

I'm also a Madden junkie as well as God of War, SOCOM 3. And love TV (CSI - all of them, My Name is Earl, Everybody Hates Chris, Pros vs. Joes, Desperate Housewives... yeah I said it!!!)

I'm a wife and mother of three, plus a stepdaughter. When I get time to play I like fishing, hiking and movies. But I would have to say that one of my favorite hobbies is watching strongmen!! Thanks guys! I just wish my husband enjoyed it as much as me. I'm trying to talk him into going to the Arnold next year. Keep up the good work!! :BP:

That show kicks ass! I dont really have any hobbies other than strongman the only time ido anything other than strongman/think about strongman iis when I am hanging out with my friends the we usualy spar, play Halo or make little movies which are all pretty fun. I am kind of weird when it comes to the shows I watch, usualy just jeopardy and good eats on the food network (told you, weird). Other than that surf the internet for whatever it is I want to learn about. I lead a boring life.

Lifting is basically my hobby, but I play the occasional video game(mostly sports games) and watch tv whenever I'm not on here. I really think I would get a lot more accomplished if I didn't have the internet. lol

I like playing/watching sports and hanging out with friends. I usually go out once or twice a week to a sports bar/club since that's where all of the college crowds are so I can meet new people. I try to keep my life as "drama free" as I can. I also like to hit up the casino here and there to try my luck.

Cooking, reading (anything by chuck Palahniuk) photography, scrapbooking and cross stitching. TRAVELING!!!!! TV~ missing, without a trace, alias.
I also enjoy going to shows, being in las vegas we have a lot of cool shows to watch.
I am pretty open to experiencing all life has to offer. I have a list of things I really want to do

the link is on my site - atheltecentral.piczo.com - if you pay enough attention to notice theres a hole in it half way through, it wasnt there to start with (on my mothers life) i made a hole in it during the vid via my index/middle finger going through the ball - i was told it was a very hard thing to do but i had done it before so i got a vid - its just an everyday tennis ball i found lying around

the best vid is the exploding apple though, you should check that one out

I enjoy just hanging out and watching TV (24, Acourding to Jim, Rodney) or shooting pool with my wife Kim. But, my main hobby is Alabama Crimson Tide Football! I am a third generation life-long 'BAMA fan. I jokingly tell people that my first words were Roll Tide, but that probably ain't too far from the truth.

Hmmm...does watching re-runs of WSM count as non strongman fun?

Cooking, playing with my dog, working with some disabled kids in the gym, hanging with the wife, swimming in the sea...

Wait...and goofing off on Strongman Message Boards.

Being a bit of a renaissance man: my interest are varied and I am proud to say that I have never in my adult life played a video game.... I read a lot, am in to photography, Fashion, journalism, Alternative theatre, MMA and wrestling.

Lifting is cool and all but for fun nothing beats a gin-fuelled afternoon of Bocce or wakeboarding followed by a still gin-fuelled full make-up cowboy(not brokeback) and school girl costume party.. good times..

I used to be very big on horseback riding, but haven't done that since I moved from Canada 3+ years ago. It was basically a full time hobby and my occupation at the time. I spent a lot of time training horses and riders, and doing volunteer work at shows throughout B.C.

Did a lot of guitar tec work as well. Had plans on building custom guitars as a side business, but got a little off track.

I love to read, basically anything that I find interesting.

I also like to hike, camp, and fish.

Brandon, I have an aquarium as well - 55 gallon community freshwater. Do you have salt or freshwater tanks?

I have freshwater tanks , I dont find saltwater tanks as relaxing especially with corals. They seem to rough and not very pleasing to me. I have a cichlid tank, then 4planted tanks. One with a rare native arizona suckermouth catfish in it, and the others have imported wild kissing gouramis with some pleco's. My smaller planted tanks have Some rare shrimps and one has a Dwarf puffer fish with shrimps :D

I love to wash & wax my car then stand back and watch her gleam in the springtime sun

I love driving....Im a car and driving nut! Find me a nice country road, sun behind me, good tunes and a couple mile stretch of clear, open road and Im loving it!

I also like to spend time with my buddy & training partner....we've been brothers now for about nearly 7 years

Brandon,

How do you keep your cichlids from killing each other? I got four little guys when I set up my tank, but one (a gorgeous pseudo-albino) grew huge compared to the others and eventually killed two. Now there's only one little convict left and he has to stay in a hospital tank to keep safe. I was thinking about getting another bigger one, but I'm afraid they's just end up fighting to the death. I also have a community fresh water with a couple of fancy plecos, angelfish, and a few other randoms.

In addition to that, I have a cat and two dogs who are awesome. Also music. I co-run an independent record label Sick Room Records (http://www.sickroomrecords.com) that does all kinds of weird-ass stuff. I sang and played guitar in a band for a couple years, but now I just paly/write on my own. I'm in School (I'll have a second BA in Audio Engineering in a few weeks). I also practice yoga. I love to travel. I'm going to Italy and Peru this summer.

I hear ya on the saltwater.

Do you have Africans or New World Cichlids?

My tank currently has:

2 blue Gouramis
1 Gold Gourami
1 dwarf Gourami
4 Black skirt tetras
2 Long finned Serpae tetras
1 Beunos aires tetra
3 Bala sharks
1 Spotted catfish
1 silver tipped shark
1 Clown Loach
1 Marbled angel
1 Common pleco

I've always wanted a puffer, but they don't really get along with longer-finned fish.

Here's my take...

I had Cichlids as well, and they're usually an aggressive fish. Convicts (new world) tend to be more aggressive than many Africans in general. If your tank is too small or overstocked, you've got a much higher chance of issues. Males tend to get really territorial as well, and your best bet is to combine a bunch of females with a single male (you will run into major issues if they breed). If you get another fish, try to pick something thats a similar size, or look for a tankmate displaying more passive tendencies when you pick one out.

You may want to go with Africans this time around. You can pick less aggressive species easier if you do some research on combining.

That said, I find they really vary personality-wise from fish to fish. I had a horrible time with aggression, and ended up trading my chiclids in for community fish even though I had done my research on species combining.

she hit it right on the buzzer! New world cichlids need HUGE TANKS! about 50-60gal per 1 fish. Since they cover alot of territory and are very aggressive. African cichlids espeically ones from lake tang are smaller and less aggressive.

Kristy i have Lake malwai cichlids. All are Mbuna (rock dwellers) there tank is full of caves and i barely see them. Especailly since they moved all teh gravel to the front of the tank ahha. The trick to keeping african cichlids is keeping them in odd numbers. and making sure there are enough caves for each fish to have at least 5 different spots. At least with the rock dwellers from lake malawi. Lake tang cichlids are smaller and require cabes and or shells since htey are shell dwelling fish.

I hear ya onthe puffer kristy. My little guy cant live with anyone

Free time for me is pretty rare these days since my business takes an average of 10-12 hours/day total from me 6 days out of the week, but if I'm not at work or lifting I can usually be found buying way too many CDs on Ebay, hanging out with my wife, watching cheesy horror films, enjoying a nice Belgian ale or wasting time in front of the computer. Nothing major, but it gets me through the week!

I haven't done it since moving to NM, but I used to be pretty big into golf. Played on the golf team in high school for 3 years and was the #3 man, if that means anything to you. Best round I shot was an 82 but I averaged around 14-16 strokes over par. I'd always lose strokes over stupid things like errant tee shots and 2ft putts. But if I was within 200 yards of the hole, I'd be in the cup within 2-3 shots every time. Never made a hole in one, though I did play with a guy who hit his 3rd hole in one during our round. Bastard.

More recently, I'm wayyyy too into HGTV and home improvement projects. I'm up til midnight watching shows on landscaping and interior design. My wife says she doesn't care what I do to the house and yard, so I spend a lot of free time sketching out designs for both.

Don't care too much for TV (except for HGTV) and wished we didn't have one in our house, but when I do watch I enjoy The Office. My wife makes me watch ER and Desperate Housewives too, and my 3 year old watches Supernanny, Nanny 911 (we think she likes getting ideas on how to be a horrible kid) and Spongebob

. . . enjoying a nice Belgian ale. . . .

Ryan, what's your favorite Belgian Ale?

I started sampling the New Belgian line of beers about a year ago and I love Fat Tire and 1554 but I'm liking the more traditional Belgian Ales I've tried. They've got too much of a homebrew after taste to me. You got any good suggestions for another lover of good beer.

Have you ever had oatmeal stout? Talk about good.

Oh and I've got a great wife and love horror flicks as well.

My personal preference is for Belgian Ales.

My favorites: Duvel, LaChouffe, Chimay, Bier Du Boucanier (11% abv!), La Fin Du Monde (CDN), and Pranqster (USA)

If you like lagers, Stella Artois is the "classic" Belgian lager - nice if the above are too earthy for you...

Hey, Jim!

The usual picks for Belgian ales I grab are Duvel, Chimay and Affligen - I've probably tried the others that Joshua mentioned plus a bunch more, but aside from the ones I normally grab I tend to forget what's what :D Though I can safely say, I've never met a Belgian ale I never liked. My wife on the other hand is a bit more picky and has been grossed out by some that I've tried and loved. Oh yeah, for a good cheaper Belgian-style ale Hennepin is a great way to go - good for sharing the taste with people who you don't want to spend $10 per bottle on :D

I've tried my share of stouts in the past, and oatmeal stout is definitely good stuff. Again, can't recall any names in particular, but I wouldn't turn one away if it were in front of me.

Horror movies dominate our collection, probably about 150 in all not including the terrible $1 old used 80s VHS stuff I would buy and promptly put away because they were so bad it hurt to watch them. Though, we end up watching the same dozen or so over and over until we practically know them scene by scene. I've seen Dawn of the Dead so many times (both versions) that I've lost count....

/me waves <-- i'm new here :)

Umm, aren't we all internet geeks?

I'll admit I'm a TV junkie as well. Law and Order SVU, CSI's, a few MTV reality shows, HBO Originals - Entourage, OZ, Sopranos, The Ali G Show

Yeah, I'd say! My Internet addiction plays a large part in my day to day life! There's just so much to read and learn and I spend most of my days (at work) checking the net out :D

I love watching TV too, although I think playing on the puter far outweighs that. I enjoy Law and Order's, CSI's, Simpsons and strongman on Eurosport, lol... amongst a few others.

For fun... well, I enjoy hanging out with my fiance, friends and family, playing my guitar, travelling (especially to Ireland) and hanging at the gym ;)

My hobbies include programming, electronics, martial arts, boxing and weight lifting.

Awesome!

I was really set on making something similar to Warrior guitars. Exotic wood, neck-thru design, really elaborate.

Sweet. I need to look at a map, but we need to pick a neutral venue. I'm in Auckland, New Zealand, you're in New York, how does Angola sound?

Yeah, the chocolate is excellent as well.

Rogue makes some really good beer if you're into flavors. Not sure if you can get it out in NZ, however.

Nah we don't get it. We're not a big stout nation either. People buy cheap 4% beers that you drink at bbqs or Heineken (cringe). I'll have to home brew somethign excellent over the next few years.

Well I work 8:30am to 4:30pm week-days, train 4-5 times a week and go to school partime in Computer Science. When I do have free time I like to do the following in no particular order:

Play around with the dogs

Teaching new words and sentences to my Parrots (African Grey Congo, Orange winged Amazon and a You-You from Senegal)

Read books

Occasionally going out drinking with some friends

Spend time with girlfriend

Watch movies

Spend time typing crap on forums

Horse around playing on my Xbox 360.

Well it's been dark when I get up and dark when I finish uni for the past three and half months so mostly my spare time consists of 4-6 hours a day of commuting, 3 hours every day of work (part time) 5 hours a day of reading, writing, designing models, drawing diagrams.

Then it's mainly struggling to motivate to go out in the cold, dark, damp Irish weather for some cycling/running/stone lifting. Just recently I joined a band, so I also do drumming at the weekend for a death metal band...laying down the blastbeats!

so I picked up another hobby today. Grappling/Tae Kwon Do/Jujitsu. One of my buddies is into it and I trained a little with him tonight and he showed me the basics. I really like it, but need a lot of practice. haha

Well for me I have been out of the military for a few weeks now and damn it is one weird adjustment. The last two weeks all I have done is hang out with my daughters, read 10 books so far by Krishnamurti, and Dalai Lama. I also honestly like reading exercise science articles. Damn I am a dork :BB: :M:

Simple nowadays. Ground, clinch, and stand up lol. I did traditional arts for around 15 years. Just not my thing anymore and a fight is never dead in movement as a lot of traditional styles are. But traditional is where I got my start in Shotokan Karate, and I wrestled all through High school. But I like reading about all styles.

I did Kenpo for 3 years and Tae Kwon Do for 1...but after a while it's just some guy in pyjamas shouting at you. Plus, I got older and just lost the taste for fighting.
