I was doing 20 reps clean pulls last night. At the 15 th rep I felt something pop in my lower back. The pain got worse and worse and brought me to my knees. I have had back spasms before. This morning I had to crawl to get around. I looked in the mirror and my upper body was leaning to the left and my hips were leaning to the right and it looked like my right hip was up higher. There are some positions that hurt worse than others. Having experienced this pain (not quite this bad) before I knew the best thing for me was to keep moving. I have been stretching and doing some things around the house. My body alignment is going back but its still not completely straight. I think tonight I will sleep on the floor. I am contemplating on whether or not I should work out tomorrow. Has anyone else experienced this. I think I need to get to a pull up bar and just let myself hang until my lower back pops.

after injuries like that I too try to stay mobile by just walking and light stretching. you need to get checked out by a chiro or some one knowledgabe.

You have a bulging disc!! If you are leaning off center, your disc is bulging and you need to get to an orthopedic specialist immediately. You should not work out until you've at least had this x-rayed to determine the extent of the damage. Lots of walking and pressups are the best things to do right now. If you ever start to feel any tingling down your legs, stop what you are doing immediately. The pain might not be that bad, and it could feel like it's fine to work through it, but doing so could lead to more damage. Get an ortho to diagnose the problem, then start working with a chiro to get yourself lined back up.

I woke up this morning and me back still hurt but not as much. I went to the gym and hung from a pull up bar, stretched on a large ball, and did some lower back stretching. I am feeling so much better. I will get to a Ortho doctor in the Hospital I work at and have one of them take a look.

Definitely advisable. The first time my disc started to bulge I ignored it and it got better on it's own, but not treating it properly that time left it in a much weaker state, which is why it ruptured down the line. Better safe than sorry to get it looked at now.

Jeff, what would you have done in terms of "treating it properly" knowing what you know now?

I ignored my physical therapy for a long time. I waited almost 4 years to start regularly seeing a chiro, and I waited 2 years to start losing weight.
Also, after the first time it started to bulge I ignored the pain until it became unbearable, then went to the doctor instead of going right away. By not working to treat it immediatly after the injury I put myself at much greater risk for re-injury, which is why the bulging disc eventually turned into a ruptured disc. If I'd started on pressups, weight loss, and weight training after the first injury I'd be alot less prone to the minor re-injuries I get almost yearly now.
