View Full Version : 300lb Seated OHP off pins

I hit 300lbs last night in the seated OHP. I do them in my power rack with the pins set at about chin level, the bar touches the bottom of my chin before I press it. I am very pleased that I hit 300lbs but I want more, much more. I have not been training them very long, about 4 months at the most.
I have been doing mainly high rep work, starting light to warm up and then working up to a max of 10 reps with as much weight as I can get. Last week I changed to doing 5 sets of 5. Last night just for the heck of it I warmed up and decided to go up and see what my 1RM was, I destroyed 275lbs , then I went to 300lbs and got it fairly easily as well. I decided to stay there for the night.
Can anyone give me any really good advice as to how to put weight on my OHP as fast as possible. I want at least 365lbs by this Christmas, I know I can do it. Please help me out guys.
Also if anyone wants to race to a 405lb seated OHP I am totally down for that. My one training partner and I are already trying to get there before the other. If you want to join in the race just reply to this post and say you want to get in it. If anyone decides to take the challenge we can agree upon some rules later.
Also I just got done doing some more OHP today to get the blood flowing through my shoulders. I worked up and hit 185lbs of bar weight plus 3 mini bands which I choke around the bottom of my power rack. I did sets of 3 reps.
Talk to you later guys,

Is your training partners last name Smith. Im up for the challenge. Make up some rules. Does it just matter where you are in the seated overhead press. Im doing them tonight so I will let you know where I am.

No, my training partners last name is not Smith. Anyway I hope more guys join in but I will make up a set of rules now just so it is done.
1. You must press the bar off of pins from a resting position.
2. The bar can be no higher than level with your chin when in the resting position.
3. You may use any grip width you want.
4. No wrist wraps, no belt.
5. You may use elbow sleeves, the kind used to keep your joints warm. You may not wrap your elbows.
6. Chalk or sticky spray is allowed.
7. Ammonia or Nose Torque is allowed.
8. You must post video proof of the lift for it to be accepted as the winning lift.
There you go, how do those sound. I think they are straight, no nonsense rules. There is nothing complicated about this, just press 405lbs from pins set at chin level or below for the winning lift.
I am looking to get 365+lbs by Christmas for sure.
Have fun getting there guys.

Billy, thanks man. No I never got a chance to try to flip that giant tire yet but I would love to give it a go. Anyway this challenge is what I will base all of my training on until I complete it. I look forward to climbing up to 405lbs and going beyond. I will hit heavy back tomorrow and will work my antagonist muscles real hard so I stay balanced. I am going to hit my lats as hard as I can so that I have a really good base to press off of, as far as I am concerned this is the key to winning this challenge. Anyway I am glad to see some guys are taking interest in this and I hope many more decide to give it a go. I love competition and I will give it everything I have to win while staying balanced and healthy at the same time. Later gents I need to hit the sack.

405 seated from just below the chin? Isn't that where most pressers start anyways with their lats flared?
I think a 405 pushpress would be more interesting because the results would be much quicker (months versus years)
I dont know much about overheads, but isnt a SEATED 405 overhead world class pressing power?
congrats on the seated 300 overhead!!! That would have been awesome to witness in person

sounds fun!!! I try and get to 400 with ya haha. Little hint on seated OHP, really drive your legs into the ground and Drive your back against the seat.
Rules should be changed to a derack, down then up press. not just start at chin.

Starting at the bottom makes it harder because there is no lowering phase of the weight. That takes all of the strecth reflex out of the lift. That rule will stay the same.

Hello everyone :D ,I met Jesse a while back and hes a good guy!Im glad you did well at WSM Jesse, very proud of you.
As for the seated OHP Heres 415,440,and 450.I can get my chin under the bar before I start but once I press I compress myself to nose/mouth area.Which is where I press from standing anyways.Everything with STA on it is me.
300lbs is awesome bro keep up the good work.

Dru, thanks man, coming from a guy who has been where I want to go on this lift that really means alot to me. Anyway man, I would really like to talk with you about how you trained for those lifts and what you think got you there. By the way, how old are you? I am 23, and am hoping to complete the lift before I turn 24, after that I just want to continue to push it as high as I can. Hope we can talk soon bro, later.

Anytime bro,I did ME days for that lift.I worked up till I hit a weight I could lift but couldnt press and strained away at it.I also used very heavy db presses to help in the movement,I knew when I hit 200lb dbs overhead I could press a 400lb BB overhead seated easily.Im 29,and Im sure you will hit your goals.

Oh man, 2000 lb tire? LOLOL. I've got news for you..if anybody has flipped this tire it is nowhere near 2000 lbs. That would require a 1000 lb deadlift from ground level in a disadvantagous position. Impossible. Anybody who claims they have done this needs to slap themselves really really hard. Or I could do it for you if you'd like.

I did 4 consecutive flips with a legitimate 1,400lb tire, and my deadlift max is a little above 700 approx (never did 7, just estimating). I don't think I could deadlift 700 for 4 reps, but I could flip that tire 4 times. Thoughts?

Steve didn`t say how often you have to deadlift this weight so I´m thinking he is speaking of a 1 RM of 1000 lb on the deadlift for the 2000 lb tire.
So Dan If you can lift 700 lb for 1 and you can flip the 1400 lb tire 4 times.
So the question is how much you have to deadlift to flip a 2000 lb tire 4 times?
Now I don`t know if this is right but if I count it up than you have to deadlift 1000 lb ones to flip a 2000 lb tire four times.
This would fit with the statement of steve.
I think this is not absolutly right because it always depends on the person but overall you can say, just like steve, you have to have at least an 900 to 1000 lb deadlift to work with such an tire...

I wouldnt know where to find a 2,000lb tire!
Great DL vid BTW!
As for flipping it and tire flipping I found power squats to be a excellent aid.

Yeah that tire at Rick's place is huge but I doubt it weighs 2000lbs. That is not the issue anyway guys, LOL. No one claimed they could flip it, I just said I would like to give it a try to see how heavy it really is. Can we please get back to the topic of OHP before we loose focus.

Dru, i don't know what say....sick lifting...insane.
As for the tire, ricks tire is 2k+lbs. someone said they can get him a big tire, and they came with a giant tire. Noone has flipped it, i think it was 2-manned though.
I need to get my OHP up. my pushpress is nowhere near what you guys are doing seated from pins. i'm interested in how you guys train you ohp.

Thanks Billys I rotate seated OHP from the chin,db presses, cambred bar behind the neck presses,I use ME and RE and thats about it.I think the db presses help the most since they are hardest to control.
As for the 2k tire I think transitioning it off your belt would be the hardest part, and pressing it wouldnt be easy either. For someone to do it,it will take more than just a big deadlift.

I trained my OHP tonight. Did some DE work, I am trying to adapt the westside style of benching to my OHP to put more weight on it as fast as I can. Tonight I did 8 sets of 3 and focued on completing the set in 3 seconds or under. You are supposed to use around 50%-55% of you max single with straight weight for your flat bench using this method but you can increase or decrease depending on if you are able to complete the set within the time limit. To my understanding that is to ensure that you are conceentrating on generating enough explosive power. Tonights sets went like this.
150lbs for 5 sets of 3 all in under 3 seconds
170lbs for 1 set of 3 in under 3 seconds
180lbs for 1 set of 3 in under 3 seconds
195lbs for 1 set of 3 in under 3 seconds
By the way, I did have someone timing me on these.
I was able to move up to 190 and complete the set in under 3 seconds very easily, I was happy with this because it is well over 50% of my current 1 rep max and I could have gone higher with ease, the weight felt like an empty bar. This leads me to believe that my 1 rep max is higher than I think at this given time and we will see after I complete my cycles of DE work with straight weight, bands, and then chains. Along with my ME work including lots of heavy DB work like Dru has told me to do. The sky is the limit and I am really pumped. Later guys, I gotta get some sleep. Tomorrow I hit my triceps and my lats as hard as I can take it.

shrug,
i would worry less about how fast you can complete 3 reps, and worry more about putting as much force into the barbell. i would also possibly bring the % of the speed benches up (as many powerlifters have done for not only the bench but the deadlift) due to the fact that people started worrying way too much about the actual speed of the barbell.
James Smith

Thank you for the advice. I am bringing the % up as I stated in my last post I went up to 195lbs and plan to go up higher as I was able to complete the set in under 3 seconds. I am not overly worried about the time I complete the set in, however I would like to try to keep the set 3 seconds or less. I understand what you mean about trying to put as much force into the barbell as I can. I am doing that, I concentrate on exploding at the bottom of the rep as hard as I can, this kills two birds with one stone by completing the set very fast as well as exerting as much force as I currently am able to. That is why I am able to keep moving up my %. As I posted my current best on seated OHP from pins is 300lbs, I suspect I could get at least 315lbs as I did not just warm up and max, I worked up slowly using up much of my power. Anyway 50% of 300lbs is of course 150lbs. I started with that weight in my workout and stayed there for the first few sets but then moved up as I felt it was to easy. I have to do my ME workout on Thursday and that will be a whole different story but next Monday will be my next DE workout and I plan on warming up good and trying my 8 sets of 3 at 205 lbs and possibly even 225lbs while keeping the time around 3 seconds for the set. Thinking about it now 225lbs should not be a problem at all. Thanks for the advice, it has me thinking.

Today I did seated OHP in my secret weapon style. It really is the key behind me getting to 405lbs before any of my training partners I think. It is much harder than normal seated OHP and that is all I will say. It went like this.
135lbs for 3 reps
185lbs for 3 reps
225lbs for 1 rep
275lbs for 1 rep (very easy)
315lbs miss but very close, I will have this in a week I feel.
After this I did Sven Karlsen Crucifix flys
20lb DB's X 2 set
25lb DB's X 1 set
I know my max the normal way is over 315lbs for sure since I almost got 315lbs this way.
I got the raw materials for my axle today and it is going to be totally awesome. I will get a pic of me pressing it and make it my avatar when it is done. I will get some close ups too. That is all for now guys, later.
