View Full Version : Diet plan for "womens fitness"

I have a friend that Im trying to get on a basic diet plan.Im having a hard time convincing her that eating one time a day isnt good,and isnt the best way to stay"fit",especially when working out.Shes 19, 5'9,and 130.No idea what her body fat is,but I know its very low.I would say her main goal is fitness,but nothing extreme.Like I said,shes only eating once a day,so just about any advice would be appreciated.
It would be nice if I could get some basic advice from the women on the board,since I think she would listen to what you all have to say.

Im not a woman.. but here is my .02

Eating just one time a day is absolutely destroying her metabolism. Eating once a day has put her body in starvation mode, and will likely store fat.. if she eats more. She can do permanent harm if she doesnt get her diet in check..

She needs to eat several small meals a day to help keep her metabolism up.

Thats what Im trying to convince her.She looks allright now,but could have a great fit looking body if she would actually listen.Ill make her read the posts here so maybe she will start to understand what Im talking to her about.

Eating one time a day is going to make you loose weight. It will make you loose a lot of muscle and leave you looking like a smaller, fatter shell of your former self (aka skinny fat).

It sounds good on paper right? Consume less then burn and you are set. Problem is that the human body is smarter than you are. It is conditioned after years of fast and famine to withstand these fasted states. If you don't keep your metabolism cooking throughout the day you will moste defenitl slip into a depleted/fasted state. The problem with this is that your body will always want to give up muscle over fat. 1) Muscle converts into glycogen (glugconeogenesis) which is much easier fuel or the brain, muscles and cells. 2) fat will be conserved since it contaings 9 cals (a measure of energy) per gram. So, incase you are in that fasted state for extremley long periods of time you are ensuring yourself that you have energy to keep living. Basically, a survival mechanism. The process is reffered to as adaptive thermogenesis. Dieting can be tricky. It is basically a controlled starvation. After dieting numerous times for diffenerent goals or for contest I can tell you that you really have to fool your body into getting it to do what you want. It is that good at knowing what is coming next!!


I would tell your friend to start out with eating 4 meals a day. If she is eating one now, then jumping her up to 6 or 7 is going to do nothing but add some weight to her. She needs to slowly restart her metabolism up back to a healthy rate of functioning. She needs to add calories back into her diet slowly otherwise if you go to fast her metabolism wont be able to keep up with that and once again....weight gain. Exercise is a big part of this also, especially some resistnace training to increase muscle mass and upregulate metabolism.

Make sure she wants to start a healthy lifestyle... You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink....

Ditto, the worst part about my job as a trainer and doing nutritional counseling is dealing with women.....hahahahha...no offense.

no offense taken... it is hard as a trainer to tell people to break old habbits... first you tell them to eat every several hours, and next you tell them they cant eat mcdonalds or candy... we are just tell people things they dont want to hear!!
