As a Canuck, I was obviously greatly saddened by the injury to Hugo (well, in fairness, you clearly don't have to be Canadian to be saddened by what happened).

I was also disappointed to hear how much Dominic Filiou struggled in the competition. Clearly he has tremendous potential (by virtue of his sheer size, also by virtue of his 3rd place finish at WSM 2005). It seems Dominic is a very "hot and cold" athlete. World class in certain competitions ... but near the very bottom of the leader board in others.

He's the second "Canadian Giant" I've heard about in the recent past. The first was Jamie Aszmies ... whom I haven't heard about at all in the last few years. Anyone know if he's still training / competing?

Seems like there's a lot of potential in these "Canadian Giants" but somehow they're just not putting it together.

Lack of consistent training?

Last I know Jamie Azmies last competed in the 2004 Ontario Strongest man competition. He finished 3rd behind Ryan Green and Travis Lyndon. I think he toured with the all strength challenge but did not do too well internationally.
Two years before then he tore both patella tendons during a farmers walk at Wasaga Beach Ontario, he was never the same after his surgery (apparently it was not very successful).
He signed a contract to fight in Japan, not sure what has happened since.

Everyone in Canada knows, Dominic would be untouchable if he could just get his confidence up. He just doesn't believe in himself and gets discouraged all too quickly. He needs to spend more time on event training and get his name out there and promote himself. I wish him the best, but those are things I (nor anyone) can help him with. He needs to find these things for himself.

Jamie wasn't the same after his op (probably a mental barrier to get by you know), last I heard he lost a lot of weight and turned to Mixed martial arts.
