Whats going on folks, first off i would like to say hello, i am new to the board. Ok to my question, i have been hearing alot about rack deads, and i don't under stand how you do them, is it all back, do you bend your knees, what does the starting postion look like, how high do you set the bar, any info would be great, and if some one has a pic or video that would be even better. Thanks

Welcome Ty. I do rack deadlifts from just below my kneecaps. I think you should try to use exactly the same technique you would if you were deadlifting from the floor. I don't feel like they work the muscles any differently than regular deads, but they get me accustomed to the feel of heavier weights. Anybody have a different approach?
The photo is Chuck Vogelpohl, a great powerlifter.
logic behind rack deads is pretty much the same as the logic behind board/floor presses. overload the weakest point of the lift so that it becomes strong and you can lock out better. you can set the bar at different heights and keep the form the same as a regular DL.

"Ty Shoelaces"..niiice....
I usually do them from just below the knee caps, which is 18" for me.To get ready for a contest once that had a dead for reps, that I was having trouble pulling for even 1 rep,I set the contest weight at a point in the rack that I could pull it from for at least 1 rep. Each week I would try to lower the pin one hole until I was at the last pin.The week after that was the contest week, and I pulled the weight for 3 reps, which was a big pr for me.

Remember most strongman contest use an 18 inch deadlift instead of a normal dead so racks help

I have touble with the lockout portion or the deadlift so I should probably be doing these more often but when I do them, I could usually handle about 100lbs more.
