View Full Version : Jesse circa 1998...teen gripper phenom
so i was flipping through some old issues of milo at coffees and in the may (i believe) 1998 issue there's a spry teen jesse closing the #3 COC, first teenager to ever do so. old news to most of you but it was cool to see jesse being a freakazoid way back when :N:

Jesse Miller. Played line for a while, then he got a girl pregnant and had to move back to Minnesota.

Ya rumor has it that you were bigger than that at birth. I heard you squatted 5 plates on your 6th bday and shortly there after grew back hair...

I could do like 10 chisn then at 236. At 266 I could do 10, at 285, 295 and 305 I could do still only do 10. Finally after 3 years of weighing over 300 I can do more than 10...

Jesse, how would you rate your #3 against todays #3's?
Jesse Marunde

easier. I've closed one fresh out of the package, then immediently closed mine and it is easier. I can't tell you if it was always that easy of if it has loosed up from the thousands of times I've closed it...

well i'm sure almost a decade of high rep sets with the #3 takes it toll :F:

you certainly make it look easier with those 10 reps..
ive joined the #3 club today myself! smashed this new #3 1st try! my other one must be 3.4 or 5, the mounts so damn low an its about as smooth as a bears backside (grippers certainly do vary!)
definately need a video of you repping out on 1 finger pull ups! i could possibly do 10 (have done 8 before) 1 finger chins, but im what, 40 or 50 pounds lighter + pull ups are harder - thats pretty sick man!

I can remember first getting onto the internet and reading JV Askem's site about his prodigy Jesse and I saw the picture of him closing a #3 in each hand. He looked so big and had stronger hands than me that I was a bit intimidated. Now, not so much :T:

The more times you close it the easier it will be to close. This has to do with the metal's shear modulus.

For what it's worth, PDA has done some testing on gripper spring fatigue and it looks like they decrease in strength for roughly the first 100 or so closes and then the strength levels off and doesn't decrease any further. See:
From www.fractionalplates.com:
There’s another lesson learned to address – seasoning. We know from the spring suppliers that they expect a spring to get gradually weaker, then level out at 25-50 cycles. However, grippers are flexed beyond the conventional torsion spring design parameters. No big surprise since, after all, torsion springs were adapted for gripper use because they were affordable and available – they were not designed for grippers specifically. Torsion springs are simply a cost-effective application of existing low end hardware. >From what we have seen in testing the loss of gripper spring strength continues to occur beyond 50 cycles. It appears to level out somewhere closer to 75-85 cycles. If you pay attention during the seasoning process, you can literally feel the gripper 'fall away' at it's threshold. When we are asked for the optional seasoning, we use 100 cycles to assure the gripper becomes stabilized. A properly seasoned gripper will have the same closing torque in ten years as it does the day it is seasoned
What I'm trying to say is I bet Jesse's #3 is still a solid #3 by any account. The new ones being put out today are on the tougher end of the spectrum, but seem more consistent.
I guess this post is what you get when a grip nerd is on the board! haha

It will stabilize to a certain degree but it will still be easier the 150000 time you close it that it was the 149999 time. Although after a 100 closes, the difference may only be 0.0001% and decrease with more closes.
