hey guys. i was wondering how i can get into powerlifting competitions at my young age of 15. i do have a few questions. are there age class's along with weight limit class's? and would i have to travel long distances to get to compete? or should i just keep training and someday enter my first competition a few years down the road?

Go to www.nastrongmaninc.com and find a meet near by and get in it. Don't worry about being ready, just do it. You cant get a better training day than an actual contest. There are teen classes in some contests. I think 186 and lower is LW and 187 and higher is HW for teens. (could be very wrong).

I see you are from WA, here's the next local contest.

ok thank man. im not near 186 just yet. so i would be a lightweight. so just getting in my first competition would be a good thing. what kind of lifts/pulls or whatnot would i have to do?

Theres a big difference between training for powerlifting (you know, squat, bench , deadlift) and strongman...

if you're looking for powerlifting meets, go to

http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/powerlifting-meets

there are teen age divisions in PL meets, and you should prob. get a year of solid PL training before competing

well i want to get into both powerlifting and into strongman events. what i was asking was should i go just for the fun and the experience and see how i do? and also if i should just train more for these events?

Go and have fun, but take it seriously. Each competition you do will be a valuable learning experience. Training conventional lifts will help you become stronger, but it doesn't translate directly to strongman. You will need to find somebody established to hook up and train with or invest in some iron and a few implements yourself; probably a log and farmers first, then stones etc. Some implements you can get for free (tires), and others you can make with help from Home Depot (sleds, axles etc.). Get a couple months of training in and try your first contest.

Powerlifting is a whole different ball of wax. You have to decide if you want to lift raw or not. If not you have to invest in and learn how to use suits etc. Training is geared for 3 specific lifts and 99% gym based. If you want a big bench press this is the avenue to take. I personally feel that modern powerlifting has more to do with smoke and mirrors than anything else.

If I had to do it all over, I would learn to Olymic lift and then move into strongman. That a solid basis for building form, speed and power.

so first start at like the conventional squat/deadlift/clean and excel in that and then move to strongman?? cuz i really think that im gonna go to that comp in woodinville and in the 168 weight class. and hopefully do good.

Train them in tandem. My meaning was that olympic lifting translates better to strongman. Train with that as a basis, add some collateral lifts, sprinting and strongman. You'll find a rhythm. Strongmen are the Jacks-of-all-Strength athletics. You've got to be able to do it all; be big and smart and have higher across the board levels of form, speed, cardiovascular fitness, and physical power than any other one discipline.

That's what makes it superior, imho.
