Hey fellas,
I'm moving to the Sacramento area, probably Woodland or Davis, to attend graduate school. I am leaving my 15 acres of prime-time strongman training area to move to an apartment. I was hoping thaty some folks here knew of any people in that area that trained or wants to train. I have heard that there is. I have implements that I'd be willing to loan to the cause. 12" log, FW bars, three stones (as of now...probably have a fourth in a couple weeks) and a 15-gal oil barrel I use for carries and such. I hope someone can help me out, don't make me go back to the world of cable-crossovers and concentration curls. aaaaaahhhhh....getting pissed at the mere thought.
I posted this at BruteStrength.com and they told me to check out Jesse's Board.

Ryan,
Where are you moving from? We have a little group in Galt, just south of Sac. Most of the guys are tuning up right now for the NorCal on Aug 5th. After that.....we are kind of in limbo, a couple of guys might do the Police/Fire/Military Nationals, and a couple of guys might do the regular Nationals. After that ????
Like I said, it's a little group, mostly lightweights. We have a couple of newer heavies now. One heavy will be coming back after Highland games season, and we have a couple of young heavies, and one woman.
Give us a call or email.
Mark Sikora msikora@frontiernet.net, or shoot me, Charles Mickey, or Matt Nickerson a pm on this site. We all post up here, as do a couple of other guys who train w/ us.
Ask around, we're not good, but we try to have fun.

p.s. -- there are several other training groups in various parts of CA, we would probably be the closest if you are in the Woodland/Davis area. If you are somewhere else, let us know and we can give you names of guys in that area.

We'll be training Saturday morning if you’re interested.
Not sure where you’re from but the 110 degree heat has been a real joy as of late. The last few weeks we've gotten going at 0730 to beat the heat.
Normally we use our respective gyms for dead, squats, etc. during the week and just hit the events once on the weekends.
We have just about every piece of equipment, a pretty good place to train and lots of beer in the fridge…

Where are you coming from Ryan? Are you a lightweight or heavyweight? Tell us a little about yourself.

Thanks for responding. I am moving from Hollister, CA, which is between Salinas and San Jose. I'm relatively new to strongman, been powerlifting for a while. I didn't even know there were strongman comps for lighter guys until a couple months ago. I'm 31, 5-9 225, so i'm no monster. But I'm really looking forward to competeing for the first time. Unfortunately, I can't go to the Aug. 5 Santa Cruz comp. I'm actually going to lift in a RAW powerlifting meet in TN that day with an old Army buddy of mine. I'm not going to be moving until mid-September, but after Aug. 5, I would definitely be interested in training with you guys on the weekends even before I move. How do you guys train? All the events every weekend? Alternate them? Anyways, thanks for helping me out. My email is rhiggins@swsv.com. Take care

I live in Woodland, work as a research scientist at UCD and train down at Galt with Mick, Mark et al. What are you going to be doing in grad school? Cheers,
Hamish

Hey what's up Hamish,
I'll be going to UCD to get my MS in Civil Engineering with my primary focus on water resources. Maybe you know of the best gym in that area.

Until you move to Woodland/Davis you may want to consider getting with Evan Hansman. I think he lives in Santa Cruz. If you’re interested, I can ask him if he's got room for another. Then once you move you can take the drive to Galt.
We train specifically for the next contest. We try to mimic the events for each contest and normally hit between 3 and 5 events each week. It can take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on logistics and bull-shit factor.
Good luck in TN!
.....I guess I won’t hold that Army thing against you....

Good subject! I did a Civ Eng Masters in Water Resources Eng and Management at Glasgow University in Scotland before my PhD. I'm now working in the hydrology program in the Dept of Land Air and Water Resourses looking at restoration of gravel-bed rivers. It's a great subject for future employment in the west coast!

Be careful! You hang out with Hamish and you'll have tons of college chicks all over you! Then next thing you know he'll have you doing 30 rep DL's and you'll wonder why your hamstring is bothering you....

Sweet...small world I guess. Hardly know of any other engineers that lift seriously. Most of my co-workers eye me with a bit of suspicion. Well, I look forward to training with you all. Thanks for the encouragement Charles. I'm looking to pull 600 for the first time at this meet so I'm pretty psyched about it. And hey, I won't hold the Army thing against you either..
