Jesse, can you recommend a place for me to get stone molds? How long have you made your own? It looks like you have atleast 10 different mold size's. Are there any good articles on making stones properly or any secrets to it?

There are some sources on making your own molds, but you will save yourself a lot of time by simply going to Slater Hardware (Slater Stones) and buying the molds from Steve. If you do it yourself, you will spend about half of the cost of the molds from Slater on fiberglass, ball, wood, etc.; so depending on how you view your value of time, I would think Slater will be cheaper too! Jesse had his molds made by a fiberglass guy and are made off of atlas stones (not store bought rubber balls). I hope this info helps, and if you contact Steve at Slater Hardware, tell him you heard about his molds on Jesse's site from Shawn. The more people do business off of this board, the more businesses will value it!

Globes (the geography kind) make good stone molds. They come in a huge variety of sizes and arent very expensive. Just use a hole saw to cut out a hole and pour in the cement, when its dry crack open the globe and you have yourself a perfectly good stone.

the best molds I've found so far are from www.slatershardware.com (http://www.slatershardware.com)They are plastic so you gotta be gentle. But I'd made probably 20 rocks out of my 20" slater mold. So they'll hold up good if you treat em good. And you can't beat the price!!!

I just put Crisco on the inside of the mold, duct tape it up and set it in a tire on the ground. Fill er up with cement and viola! you got yerself a rock!

Stupid question but are all the stones at the WSM, and big contests of that nature, the same diameter? I assume not. Also, with the slater's molds, is there any need to refinish the balls so they arent pitted and what not? Thanks

Nope. All different diameters. Probably have to finish sand them around the center to remove rough edges.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Jouko has it at just over 500.

Ryan

You are correct that jouko has lifted the heaviest stone but i believe that his lift was 474 lb and the height was 39-40 inches?? and laszlo feteke lifted a 512 lb stone onto a barrel about 30 inches high..
