Hey guys,
I'm just starting out at strongman after doing fairly well at powerlifting for the past several years. That said, I haven't done much overhead pressing, and so I'm trying to figure out the best option for log work. Those of you with good log maxes (mid 300s and over) - do you push press it, or jerk it? And if you jerk it, do you split jerk or squat jerk? Why?
Thanks.

i use a squat jerk, because i can do the most weight that way. i don't like the split because i don't like trying to align my feet with the log locked out. sometimes you aren't allowed to "re bend" your knees so you have to use the push jerk. a lot of the powerlifter types do the push style because they have very strong lockouts. my overheads look more like one of those 120lb asian guys in the olympics (all legs)

I definately Power Jerk the log and axle, but my numbers are not good at all, lol. I use this becuase I can lift the most weight this way, simple as that.
You should go train with Susan and get het to teach you some OLY stuff.

On the larger diameter logs I have a harder time, and usually end up doing a push press instead of jerking it.On the smaller diameter logs,I almost always do a jerk

I see very few people actually JERK their true max on the log.
Watch the Olympic Lifters in the Olympics. I saw several of them have to press out the last couple of inches. Of course, they got redlighted there...but they could put up more weight overhead, IMO, if they were allowed to do so.
I try to use the jerk technique...but when it gets over 320 it is fairly hard for me to drop under it and catch it.

I jerk the fuck out of it :D
I usually have to press out the last inch or two of the lock out like Clint mentioned though.
350 split jerk (comp)
360 push jerk (comp)
sorry to go off topic, but whats the difference between a push press and a squat/power jerk? i always thought of them as the same thing

push press you start the movement with your hips (extending them) and then lock out the rest.
push jerk is like a split jerk where you are dropping under the bar more (kind into a quarter front squat) except instead of going into a split stance your feet are going to be parallel in a squat stance.
