Jesse,
You don't need back up. We believe you. It would be nice to see your weights. I for one would like to see how you are progressing workout to workout and/or how you progress from set to set. I learn a lot from analyzing others routines and without the weights there are too many possible variables to get a thorough understanding. So please post your weights. We all trust you and I'm sure we are all curious as to your normal training weights.

Can you please detail you training split. It looks to me like you have one day devoted to pressing, a pulling/back day, one strength day for legs and one explosive day for legs and then event training??

Jesse Marunde
06-24-2005, 11:28 PM
monday- some sort of pressing movement hgih volume and heavy, low volume lat work, high volume triceps, seated DB power cleans.

tuesday-
almost totally devoted to squatting. squat till you drop style. light power snatches as a warm up. lately we've been doing box step ups, then some sort of pull (RDL, STLD, DL, snatch pull, clean pull etc), and front squats. We spent most of the winter back squatting so we're working on some front squats untill we get bored. If there is any gas in the tank after this we hit some leg extensions and calf raises. There is never any gas left in the tank.

Wed-
High volume lat work.
Lots of grip work.

Thur-
Some sort of overhead movement (front or back- press, push press, jerk or some sort of combination). Then high volume power cleans. Then axle or log clean and jerks. Then kettle bell work- cleans, presses and high pulls.

Fri-
off

Sat-
Hit the events like one insane.

I do cardio off and on. I prefer sprinting. I also have been throwing the shot and disc once in a while. I walk alot too just to loosen up.

What is the meaning behind the Jesse quote "never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lay down, never lay down unless you're sleeping"? Is it a cooler way of saying don't waste your energy?

Jesse, sorry to be a pest. I was wondering if you could put up a video of you doing seated DB power cleans. I can't seem to figureout how to do these properly. Are you just swinging the weight up to the shoulders? Where do you start the lift from if you can't use your hips since you are sitting?

It was Jesse expressing the importance of time management!

Damn good bit of advice too :)

Thanks for the post, Jesse. If you don't mind, could you post the numbers for the cleans/squats? Or sets/reps, or something to give an idea of the intensity of each session. I am a fan of full body orkouts and doing movements multiple times a week, I was just curious as to how you set it up in terms of light/heavy and workload etc.

..I think you need more squats! ;)

WOW! That's a ton of squatting!!!! What are your percentages/reps etc? Is this squatting almost everyday thing new? Is it one of the things you said you learned from Mariusz? I noticed he does both multiple back squat and front squat days per week.

By the way thanks for posting. I love reading your workouts.

I think you need more power cleans!! lol.....

I am curious about the rep percentages for the squating (and even the cleans). Especially since you back squat one day and then front squat the next.

if you want to know how I squat, simply familiarize yourself with the sport of Olympic lifting. my training is always changing, adapting, and being altered to adjust for current goals, needs, and situational requirements. Right now the focus is on developing a big power snatch, power clean, high rep deadlift and front squat. on events, though I continue to train them all, I'm focusing primarily on front carries, stones, gripping and yoke.

The reason I don't post my weights is so that I cannot be accused of bluffing. I will only make claims when I have video and/or picture proof to back it up. Also, my training is my life, and my life is precious to me. I don't discuss very personal information on here, nor do I disclose the finer details that comprise my training regime.

yea, I figured your squating would be more like an olympic set up. Looking at the routine it is very "olympic" in nature.

Mike Westerling
11-01-2005, 07:27 PM
I understand why you don't want to divulge your secrets. I would love to learn more about Olympic Lifting training theory. I like the idea of doing lifts more frequently as it seems if you never heard the word "overtraining" it would make sense that the more you did something the better you would get at it. However, this goes against the grain of both powerlifting and most other strongmens training routines. Can you recommend a source to learn from on the net or a book or video series etc? I have done a search and got so much conflicting info I am unsure of what is garbage and what is gold. I would appreciate a kick in the right direction.
Thanks,
-Mike

dude...for being a strongman competitor and for someone who drinks 1 gallon whole milk and eats a couple pounds of grass land beef a day...i would believe you when you say you can front squat 600 or more....

The only thing that would be unbelievable is doing what sarge did ...except for like 50more reps... :IMHO:

Just wanted to let you know I just ordered a bunch of stuff from ironmind. I didn't see where I could tell them you sent me on the order but I made sure I got there by way of your link and I sent an email to the lady that sends out the order confirmation telling her I found them through your site and asked her to make sure you got credit for the lead.

My new toys:

Weightlifting Encyclopedia
Bulgarian Training Hall DVD
Gripper #3
Gripper #4 (hey I can hope can't I?)
Rolling Thunder
Eagle Loops
Super Series DVD

Of course I got the 2 day shipping. I can't wait for Santa to bring them now can I?

By the way, if you are still sore from your last squatting session do you still squat?

By the way I just noticed your new avatar pic and DAMN!!!!!! is your back thick! Especially the lower. Not that it wasn't always big but I remember seeing a shot a while back and your back is twice as thick as before! Nice work! Your Deadlift must be coming up fast!

Thanks for putting the extra effort into letting ironmind.com know I sent ya. Randy Strossen supports strongman in a huge way so I like to send him as much business as I can. Also, a while back a gift showed up in the mail out of the blue, and what do you know, Randy gave me a buffalo bar! AWESOME!

Yes I train sore. Why not? I did it for football, wrestling and track all through school, why not do it for strongman training too?

Ah it's all trick lighting and such. I still need to get alot bigger I think. My deadlift is still making it's comeback after the injury to my biceps femoris tendon in the Super Series event in Sweden. This thursday I will deadlift 451x20 to finish off a short 20 rep deadlift cycle. Then I will slowly start to bring the reps down and the weight up to see how my hammy deals with it.

I'm bumping this for everyone...plus I'm in need of more tips from our resident runner up

I wanted to comment on the squats 4-7 days a week concept. I'd imagine it's a wide variance of reps and weight. I'd also imagine that overtraining would take place, but I also think that people confuse overtraining with boredom and that isn't always the case. I definitely believe the body can handle more than the mind is giving it credit for. Basically, if you can push through the boredom and complacency of squatting that often I'm sure it would be beneficial in terms of endurance, but 1RM I have my major doubts that it would help.

*I also think the theory applies to other big lifts, but not all
