View Full Version : Might not make it to nats

Anyone who has a "sensetive stomach" shouldn't read this.
So, last Wedneseday I started having symptoms of some "stomach issues". Let's just say I had to take Immodium before squatting that day. The symptoms got progressively worse over the next couple days. By Friday evening, my stomach was in knots and I had migrane headaches. Friday night, I was on the toilet every 2 hours, and blood was coming out. Went to the doc Sat morning, and they drew blood and collected a "sample". My white cell count was fine, which would have been an indicator of food poisoning. The other tests will take 4-5 days to come back. The only thing I haven't done is vomit.
The stomach cramps have me confined to the house, because I can't move very well. I can't eat any dairy or meats. I had 4 oz of salmon last night, and it tore me up for hours. All I can eat are whole grain carbs, which gets old fast. Because of the cramps, I haven't been able to eat much at all, but I have been drinking Pedialyte. I haven't trained since Thursday, and I've lost about 5 lbs due to the fact that I can't eat much.
The doc thinks it's either an intestinal virus, or ulcerative colitis. So, now I just wait 4-5 days for the test results. In the meantime I can't train for nats, and I can barely eat. So, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. The worst part is not knowing how long this will last, especially with nats being right around the corner.

Paul, I had the same thing about a year or two ago and it went on for 8 weeks without doctors finding out what it was..and I lost 15 lbs. If it doesn't end up being a virus, let me know, I can let you know how I finally cured myself.

Wow that sounds awful!!
There is a big E. Coli thing going on right now in CA due to some spinach, just so you know. Not sure if the spinach made it out your way or not.
Either way: get better. Health first. Contests a distant second.
good luck

The E Coli virus has been all over the country. Luckily, I haven't eaten any spinach in months. Also, a main symptom of E Coli is a high fever, and I'm still at 98.5, so the doc doesn't see it as a possibilty for me.
I called my doc today and had him call in a prescription pain killer for the stomach cramps, which kept me from going to work today. The cramps got so bad last night, I was in tears for a few minutes. Hopefully, the cramps will go away enough that I can tolerate some workouts. In the meantime, we're still waiting for the test results.

Paul-
This may be a stupid question, but did he check you for ulcers? I know you've been under some stress lately. I'll be praying for you...

They didn't do any X-rays because I went to an "immediate care" clinic on Saturday. But, it is a possibilty.
All the info was transferred to my regular doc, and I'm sure he'll make another appt for me when the remaining test results come back.

Stomach/intestinal cramps are the most painful thing I have ever felt. I feel for you when you say they had you in tears.
What can I say, I hope this is not a serious condition and that you heal up fast and full. Nationals come around every year, just get yourself healthy.

That's the funny part, I'm not naucious at all. Like I said, the salmon gave me such bad cramps that I was in tears, and the pain lasted for about 12 hours. As badly as I wanted to vomit, I never got close to it.
So Scott,
Fill me in, please. What did you do to get rid of what you had?
BTW, the pain meds are making the cramps bearable. So, I'm off to the gym to see what I can handle today, and then I'm off to work. I think I still have a couple days before all the test results come back.
Thanks for all the feedback guys.
paul i'm really sorry to hear this :( hope you get it figured out and are feeling better soon.

sounds exactly...and i mean exactly like something i had 2 years ago.
Finally got a blood test or something after having symptoms for 1 week and found out i had shigella. I think i got it from eating out....a week later my gf at the time got it and she got so bad that i had to take her to the ER.
Symptoms(for me)were bad for 1 week then slowly went away over the course of a month. I know it sucks man....stick it out you'll be back to training in no time

-i had a protozoa type parasite 20 years ago--same symptoms-lost 25 lbs in 3 1/2 to 4 weeks--
-i was traveling a lot in those days--may have picked it up out of country--would be unusual for someone in the midwest-?but it could happen-
in those days they gave me compazine for the cramping and i forgot the medication--the meds didn't seem to help-i was bodybuilding lean at the time and was wasting away pretty fast-
a health food store guru told me to take papaya tabs, acidophilus, garlic and to eat carrots--i continued the meds and ate the herbs and digestive enzymes and it finally settled down--
--i think the only way for them to identify it-as a parisitic infection- is a blood test or the old stool test--
--you can losea lot of muscle and mass real fast if it isn't taken care of--
--my advice be the agressive patient and ask for tests--now adays with hmo's and other insurance limitations they may be reluctant to "offer"the test-
tests are expensive--a patient suffering is not-
good luck

i agree with the above, worms and parasites can live alll over the GI tract. You either got a really bad case of food posioning, a parasite liek a worm or something from bad meat, or Maybe even some sort of infection in your pooper.
Get better dude, And even though it hurts to eat Try to get as much in as you can without expelling it out or liek said you will waste away. I had the stomach flu after the Utah comp and lost 10lbs in 2 days

--i think the only way for them to identify it-as a parisitic infection- is a blood test or the old stool test--
These were sent to the lab on Sunday, and it takes 4-5 days for the results.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
It is getting a little better, but I'm still having a tough time eating as much as I usually do. I toughed it out and went to the gym this morning for a push/pull workout. Even though the meds helped with the cramps, it really showed in my performance that there is some sort of virus in my body. I was pretty weak and even got somewhat dizzy. But, I just listened to my body and used lighter weights.
In the meantime, I hope those results are in tomorrow. I feel really bad because a sponsor has already paid for my plane ticket to nats. I'll make a final decision by next weekend as to whether or not I can compete. If it comes down to it, I'll just reimburse the sponsor for the ticket. If the virus continues, I'd hate to show up at nats only be able to do 75% of my potential.

Oh, c'mon Paul! I showed up to Wisconsin and was only able to do 60% of my potential (3 of 5 events)! HAHA!

Going into my 1st contest, I had a nagging back injury.
I did 2 contests in April with a bad shoulder injury.
There is no way that I "want" to back out. You'd better just pray that I'm back up to 100% soon. That way, IF you beat me, you can say that "Paul brought it 100%" and you still beat me. It would also look better this way if I beat you. You might cry if you got beaten by a guy with a gastro- intestinal virus. :M:

Well yeah, there's almost always something bothering going into a contest. I was feeling great and then my elbow starting hurting recently. Just have to try to feel as good as you can going in...
There is no chance for you beating me. NONE. :D

OK, swithing gears now.
My symptoms are changing a little. I can now eat meats again. Last night I had about 8 oz of salmon and it didn't upset my stomach. However, the cramps are still there. I still can't eat as much as I'd like to, because it just hurts to try and pack it in. As of this morning, I have now lost 8 lbs! I'm packing some extra carbs to take to work today, and I'm off to the gym for squats. Hopefully those test results will be in today.

Well, my test results came back today. It was the one thing that no one suggested, and it was also the most likely....Salmonella.

Actually, cooking the egg kills all bacteria including Salmonella. The bacteria lives on the outside of the shell, and the egg picks it up when you crack it and the egg runs down the outside of the shell. I'll just start running hot water over the eggs before making my shakes now.
