View Full Version : Sharp pain inside colar bone
I've been having this pain just inside of my collar bone for about 5 days now. It just feels very incomfortable like I slept on it wrong or something. It almost feels like it needs to be popped and that would relieve the tension. I can't tell if it's a muscle or something worse though. I do know it happened while I was training, but it just isn't seeming to heal up.
Any ideas?
P.S. I'm going to say it's not a rotator cuff because I can do the basic rotator cuff stretches/exercises without it hurting. It mostly hurts at the top half on presses and overhead stuff.

I have the exact same thing. Doc said it was bursitis and a mild labram tear. He did some stress tests to check for rotator and AC tendon stuff, and said it seemed I was clean from those.
He says the worst thing that can happen, is a full labram tear, which would accompany a dislocated shoulder. I am being treated with dextramethasone (some kind of cortosteroid) shots and phys. therapy, which consists of rotator work and rows.

Can you tell us how it happened in training? That might help diagnose it. Can you reach over to the opposite armpit, like you're putting on deodorant?

yeah, that doesn't bother me at all. It mostly hurts when I lift my arm overhead.

I know I injured it on shoulder day. Not quite sure which exercise I was doing though.

What did he say about normal training? Are you supposed to avoid it except for your phys. therapy? I've been trying to work through it, but it hasn't been healing up so I'm going to take a few days off and see where I stand. Right now, it even hurts to do pushups. :(

The doctor seems to think I should still be able to train, seeing as pressing overhead doesn't seem to hurt as much as doing things like lat raises, rotations, and daily chores like weaving my belt through my belt loops (reaching behind me and pulling). The Physical Therapist, OTOH, thinks I should lay off until my rehab is done... that's just not going to happen until after Orlando strongman.
That being said, the only thing holding me back for this comp is conditioning, so I really haven't been pressing that much, I am plenty strong enough to play with a 240 log. Instead I have been working my tireflips and grip.

By the way, doing pre and post-training rotator work, like band pulls and rows, seem to reduce the amount of post-training swelling and pain.
I actually felt decent enough to do some push-ups and non-weighted shoulder raises(military style workout). It is just taking forever to heal up.

Here is what the physical therapist told me regarding regular training while doing PT for shoulder, "if it hurts don't do it"
Help yourself a bunch with icing it and taking tylenol or aleve.
Another thing that supposedly helps with rotator cuff impingent is taking a broom stick, holding it sideways in front of you with both hands, then lifting it overhead, and then down in back of you, return to front. Do this for 50 reps. I know high reps aren't all that popular here but this is more a range of motion and flexibility thing. I used it and it seemed to help some but my problem was labral tears more than rotator cuffs.
Bottom line shoulder injuries suck. Good luck to ya

I was looking through the threads and seen that you hurt your neck/trap area a little while back. That may account for some of this.

My traps were hellishly fatigued and sore when I blew my shoulder bursae. I had pulled and shrugged heavy the wednesday before, and was still very sore on the Sunday I went squatting.
Coming out of the hole on a PR box squat, I felt good enough to double it - but a few minutes after I racked it, I stretched and immediately felt the pain in my shoulder.
