Grinding sound in knee w/ no pain

I get this loud grinding sound in my knee when I extend my leg with any resistance, when I go up stairs etc. There's no pain, but sort of a warmish feeling behind my patella; barely noticeable, but there nonetheless. It all started after a particularly intensive week of leg workouts. Never happens otherwise. Anybody know what this is or have any input? Could it be temporary?

I have had it in both knees for almost a year .No idea what it is.I looked it up once and got some feedback on it possibly bieng trapped air in the cartlidge.I'm going to the doc for it next month

I believe sound like that w/ no pain is called crepitus. Allegedly it is no big deal.
