Done competing. I will always lift.

Done competing? I've seen you, on video, pull 700 and you don't even weigh that much! You'd better be making the switch to strongman. You should post the stuff for sale at ironsport.com, I know there is a lot of powerlifters that train at that gym.

Nah, no interest in either anymore.
As a matter of fact...there may be an equipment sale very soon.

I see almost everyone wears knee wraps and such when squatting in strongman competitions or deadlifting... are these absolutely essential? I have never tried them.. so I really don't know what they do for you... But, I am really hooked into olympic lifting, powerlifting, strongman, anything with strength.. so I am wondering if this is a good time to get one of these cheap pair of knee wraps?

All knee wraps are gone, errector shirt is gone.
The last pec teat the last straw, Rick?
Yep. This is f*cking stupid to keep doing this to myself, whats next? I blow a knee out and cant work and cant support my family? For what? A freakin' PR??? No thanks.
Back to training to health reasons and tim to indulge in other hobbies....

That sucks, Rick. I think you should continue to squat and deadlift because I believe you never had any knee or back problems, unless I'm mistaken. Also, instead of the bench press, focus on the standing overhead press.

Like I said, I am just not in it anymore. I have done a lot of thinking and soul searching on it, and it is time to get out. Too much time, money, effort, etc. has been wasted for what? I think being healthy and being here for my wife and kids is more important then trying to deadlift 800.

Couldn't agree more! I stopped powerlifting as well for a lot of the same reasons as you.

Well said Rick - That's one of the reasons I'm going back down to the 231's - well that, and I got my ass handed to me at Nats in the 300's, LOL
Seriously, though, there are a lot of people that would do themselves good to maybe drop a weight class or just add in some cardio to be healthy. I'd like to see my kids grow up.

I am glad a couple guys 'get it'. Don't get me wrong, I still very much love strength athletics and will continue to support them, spectate them, and enjoy them! Hell, I coach powerlifting at the prison I work at, so I am pretty involved in it every day. I love strength and I am in awe by huge lifts, but at the end of the day, it just isnt for me anymore.
This last pec tear gave me some time off to think about it. What really drove the nail in was thinking back on these last few years. I work the 12-8:30 shift, I would get home by 9:30 PM, say hi to my wife and kids, get dressed, then go out to the garage to train. I would get done by 11:30-12 and of course, everyone would be in bed asleep by then. How is that any way to live? I dont get to see my wife, I dont get to talk to the kids-hell I dont even know what social functions they are in or what their grades are right now! :BB:
Weekends were spent at home because those were my days off and thus they were my long training days. Many times I had to shoot down dinner plans with my wife because I had to get a squat workout in. WTF???
What the hell do I even do this for? Money? Nope. Fame? Nope. Improving myself? Nope. Heavy lifting sure isnt improving my health and longetivity! It is a waste of time for me. Plain and simple. I have torn my pec twice, I have hip problems, I have foot problems, and I have tendonitis in every joint in my body. Hell of a way to live for a f*cking PR!
I want to be in shape and about 70 pounds lighter. I want to be able to leave for a weeks vacation and not stress out cause I am missing workouts. I want to go on vacation and not have it planned around a contest. I want to be able to one day ball my grandkids up when they are in their teens and not tire or be sore.
The next LEAP in this will be selling my gym. Selling everything and just keeping my blast straps, my heavy bag, and getting 4 or 5 kettlebells to keep some strength. I am not sure if I am ready to take that leap yet. I have a f*cking ton of equipment and a lot of memories in that garage...

Rick, it takes a real man to put his family in front of his own gains. I don't know if it matters or not, but I respect the hell out of you for your decision!! Good luck in all your future endeavors. At the end of the day, the only ones that matter are the ones you see right before you close your eyes at night, because we all know tomorrow isn't promised to anyone!!!!!

Rick,
You do what you gotta do man. I've been thinking about alot of stuff lately. Some of my coworkers ask me why i train like i do, or why do this and that. I've even contemplating doing light lifting and lots of cardio. Then I looked at other peoples lifestyles. The people questioning me spend their time in bars or clubs. I have no interest in that. If you really think about it, does anyone do anything that is meaningful?
As long as you enjoy what your doing, you will have lived a full life. For some people, that means getting pr's, for others it means enjoying time with family and friends. 99% of us are never going to make a living from lifting.
Good Luck Bro.

Rick,
You'll be back. Trust me. Whether it's in one week, one month, one year, or one decade, one day you will feel the urge once again. It sounds like your current life situation doesn't give you a lot of time to train, which interferes with family time, but you never know, you could find more free time in 10 years.
Hope everything goes well,
-Alex

Good luck Rick.
There was an article on Elite Fitness where a powerlifter done the exact same thing as you for the very same reasons.
Stay strong and take care.

Rick,
Read the article you wrote in Strong! Issue #3. Good advice and congrats on winning the Deadlift Challenge. You've sacrificed for the Iron and made big gains...now it sounds like your family needs your sacrifice. Good luck with everything.

I agree a lot with what you have said. I am also taking a step back, still going to compete, but rather than compete at all costs, I am only going to compete when healthy.
My goal has always been to have a very efficient workout, rather than a workout that produces the best gains. Got it down to 2, 1 hour sessions per week plus 3 hours of strongman events on weekends.
If i just wanted to be in great shape and still be strong, think i could easily accomplish that with 3, 1 hour sessions per week which would serve for both strength gains and cardio as well.

Thanks for the support everyone-
I plan on doing lots of different cardio (eliptical, rower, Xcountry skiing, etc.) and body weight exercises. I have seen some inmates that do strictly bodyweight workouts and they are quite muscular.
Might do some kettlebell work as well. Regardless of what I do, it will be short, intense, and then forgotten about till next time.
Thinking about training has actually kept me up at night. Jesus that is dumb.

Good Luck Bro.
Sure. Taking the time to listen to my wife, take a walk with her, take her out to dinner, come home from work and just veg on the couch with her under a blanket-all of those things are meaningful to her.
Sitting down with my daughter and making sure she understands her Algebra, going to her volleyball and basketball games (which I havent been able to do thanks to my lifting schedule!), talking to her about her friends or what she wants to do when she graduates in 2 more years. Those things are meaningful to her.
Playing guitar or drums with my son who is a bass playing maniac, throwing the football around out back with him, taking him to Ozz Fest and other shows, helping him with his physics. Those things are meaningful to him.
All of those things, plus, for me, taking time to finally perfect my own drumming, really learning the guitar inside and out, writing stuff other then lifting articles, working with my English Bulldogs(that is a job itself!), reading things unrealted to lifting (I am not sure when the last time was I did that, but I am currently reading an awesome Steven King novel and the newest issues of Modern Drummer and Drum Magazing), working on my house inside and out. These are the things that are meaningful to me.
My wife, oldest step-son, and myself are all kicking around the idea of opening a tattoo/piercing shop in the future. They are both extremely talented artists, and my son is preparing to start a tattoo apprenticeship. I just bought my wife $1300 worth of equipment so she can learn on her own, my legs are going to take a beating! :M: There is 1 small shop in the area and he does terrible work. There is a branch college campus right up the road that would keep us busy, plus, it is what we like.
At any rate, I think sometimes people have to close chapters in their lives and I am preparing to close this one. I have spoke about it in the past, but never felt this passionate about it. I am more ready to move on now then I ever was in the past and I am ready to explore things in life that I have never had the time to explore. I need to broaden my horizons and I want to be known for more then just, "the big bald dude who has tattoos and lifts a lot of weight!"
Other changes are being made as well. I have not cut my hair in 3 or 4 weeks. I am going to just let it grow. I had long hair, I mean really long, in 1996 and buzzed it then. Since then I have shaved it every week. My wife has never seen me with long hair and it is blowing her mind! I told her to wait a couple years... LOL! I am also letting my gottee grow. However long it gets, it gets.
2 nights ago my wife sat me down and asked me what was wrong. She asked me if I was depressed or if I had a girlfriend on the side or something! :EL: She said all she has ever known of me is this bald headed guy who gets crazy and eats, sleeps, and breaths the weight pile. I didnt tell her, but that was like a slap in the face! I am so much more then that! I told her I wasnt ure what was wrong, but I dont have a girlfriend and I am not going anywhere. I am just changing, morphing every day.
Well, I guess I have rambled on enough. Once I get every sold that I want to get rid of, I will be non-exsistant around these forums. TO everyone that has ever helped me or I have helped: good luck to you! Keep on doing what you love and keep reaching for the stars. I am going to be cool-and I am going to finally live.
Ever watch Dazed and Confused? "You just gotta keep livin man. L.I.V.I.N."
