The concept seems cool, but I bet that the re-enactors in Iceland are just as lame as the re-enactors here.

Shoot, Dan,

Hey, every year in those "men's" magazines they have some article about the hotel made totally out of ice up in Greenland or Iceland or Finalnd or something. You sleep on the furs of dead animals. You drink whatever the hell the drink up there (the blood of the conquered) etc. That beats the hell out of any re-enactment stuff.

If you want to play act: when you go to AZ in January, there is a company that will rent you a full auto .50 caliber and take you to the desert in a Hummer. (Private Hummers arranged separately). Not Viking, but sounds kick ass none the less.

see ya

Mark

I was just wondering what is the reason behind many strength athletes being so obsessed with Viking leniage? This is a serious question, I'm not trying to start a internet war, I just really want to know what the fascination is. I know JPS and Svend had a lot to do with it, and I also know that the region has produced some freakishly strong individuals, but there are other cultures (both ancient and modern) that have produced just as many freakishly strong athletes as well, but no one seems to want to emulate those. I also know that a lot of the stereotypes associated with Vikings have been debunked as well. So can someone explain the fascination, please? Feel free to PM me with details as I don't want to hijack Dan's thread and he unleashes Viking Power on me!!! :FF:

I don't know about the "fascination" either, but you did forget to mention Magnus Ver, Samuelsson, Ahola, and Virtanen. That's 8 titles for Iceland, 1 for Sweden, 3 for Finland, and 1 for Norway. That's quite a bit. (almost half?) Also, Norse Mythology is quite interesting, and includes many feats of strength and manliness.

I'm a US born Norwegian/Scot and i am proud to be the viking in the kilt.

Ryan Rhodes do you compete or just train strongman?

Elliot I see your point. I've been researching norse mythology all day and true indeed there are several fascinating stories of great strength and amazing feats. I can definately understand the fascination. It draws a stark comparison to Greek Mythology but no one goes around claiming Greek power, even though, statistically there are more Americans of Greek and eastern Mediterranean descent than Scandanavian/Norse descent. Plus the Greeks have produced several Oly champs in weightlifting and other sports. I think Arnold's Conan character has a lot to do with it as well.

I believe Dan's surname of Harrison indicates a certain amount of scandanavian blood.

Mac I'm happy to hear you found this topic interesting. If you're looking for more, I recently finished a book entitled "Norse Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Heroes Rituals, and Beliefs" by John Lindow. The book was very-well written and researched. I learned a lot, and it prompted me to buy "The Prose Edda" by Snorri Sturluson which is one of the main references for the first book.

Another comment on this topic in general, being American, it was/is difficult to learn my own ancestry. My grandparents just wanted to be American, not German or Italian, or whatever else might contribute to what I am. I have no problem with just being american either, but I think many people feel the need to identify with one or more particular cultures, and for a strength athlete, I can see Norse culture as being very desirable to identify with.

Keep in mind that many of our events stem from the Viking and Celtic "manhood" rituals. For instance, the Husefel Stone being an Icelandic ritual, the McGlashen, Dinnie, Fianna, and Inver Stones being a tradition in Scotland, the Fingal's Fingers and Fishing Pole deadlift from Ireland, and the Highland Games, which have been long associated with strongman.

This sport grew from the vikings and the celts and their "manhood trials". There is even oft-quoted pseudo-fact (I don't know if it could ever really be proven) that the highland games, which have their earliest roots in Ireland, not Scotland where they current thrive, predate the Grecian and Roman Heavy events (but like I said, I don't know how accurate this statement is).

I used to think ninjas were funny, than I got this thing about pirates for a while. Now I have moved on to vikings. Why? Here are the reasons
1) Vikings have crazy awesome beards
2) Vikings stab people all day long and don't even care about it
3) Vikings have horns growing out of their heads and special hats so their horns can poke out
4) Vikings are never babies. They are born into adulthood.
5) Vikings sail on water and drink beer. Not the other way around...ever!
6) For more information go to www.realultimatepower.net and replace the word ninja with viking.

A little out of topic, but the Ice Hotel previously mentioned is located in northern Sweden, in a place called Jukkasjärvi.

A pretty cool place, go there if you get the chance...in the wintertime :)

My middle name is Van. I must have been born in Holland too! Of course I emmigrated to the US when I was 7. Van Hatfield came over with me also. Since Holland was a part of "Old Scandinavia", we both claimed Viking Power and became strongmen. Hey, wanna see a picture of our abs?

..And Dan's dad is named Harri and they're both from Norway.
