did some heavy push jerks the other day working up to a max single with 330lbs. small amount of pain during lifting but the next morning i stepped out of my bed and the pain was so bad i almost fell to the floor.
The pain is the worst at the tibial tuberosity but radiates 2" in all directions. Painful to the touch and very painful when bearing weight and/or stepping up stairs.
Liftted friday night......did ice rubs every 2 hrs yesterday at work as well as naproxen without much relief, today pain is only slightly better
I've felt this pain before in the past but it was very mild and usually accompanied with patellar tendon pain. Its weird to feel this much pain out of a bone, any help would be greatly appreciated.

try some taping techniques that have helped me alot with push presses and front squats. I use some special tape I use with patients and it is kind of pricey but try it with just athletic tape first. I would recommend shaving so the tape can adhere directly to your skin. I would also recommend having your knee sleeves already on up to your calves so you can pull them up over the tape to help keep it in place.
you want to make a "V" with the tape from just above your tibial tuberosity, and just below your patella for the start and go out towards your lateral quad with one strip of tape (3-4 inches) and then go in towards your medial quad with another strip of tape(3-4 inches). Then put another 2-3 pieces directly on top of this piece of tapebut pull this top piece tighter and actually gather some skin so you are kind of pulling the starting point out with the outer piece and in with the inner piece.
then put your sleeves on over then tape to help keep it in place. This tape job helps me alot. if it helps you I would recommend getting the more expensive tape from a physical therapy clinic. There are two kinds you would need. Cover-all and leukotape. You can have them show you how to do it also.
It is hard to describe it in writing. If you want, I could fax you a picture

ahhhh...i remember them doing this type of taping to guys when i played college ball. You described it well enough that i'll know how to do it.
Should i tape them to help them get better or let them heal and then just tape when i train? Also, what is the underlying cause of what this pain is?

you are saying the pain is in your bone and not your pattelar tendon?
Maybe you have a stress fracture?

the pain is at and below the tibial tuberosity
I'm not sure where the patellar tendon attaches but given my history of patellar tedonitis i'd veture to say the pain is tendon related.

I would say the pain is tendonitis and is from what we do.
push presses with 330 is a ton of weight forcing your knees to go past your toes. it is unavoidable with this exercise and that is why your knees are killing you today.
front squats kill me. I dont do them heavy because I pay for them for days.
I tape for every heavy squat and overhead day.
I would ice the hell out of your knees, take 500mg of Alieve two times per day, and tape daily for the next two weeks.
after that just tape with your squat and push press days.
I think you just have bad tendonitis and nothing to worry about.
I don't have rehbands but I wonder if one of the reason people like them so much is because of the stiching in the front that is kind of like this tape job. just a thought.

jerks, especially with the log, are the hardest on my patella tendons. I've thought I just tweaked something when in fact I, on several occasions, tore tendon. Be carefull because you're way more fragile now than ever in that area.

thanks for all the advice guys, i will definitely be careful with this in the future.
I think i'll do just strict pressing in the gym and save the heavy push press/jerks for contests.

thinking back i now remember when all the pain began. I was at monsters of the midwest last year getting ready for the yoke and instead of picking up the light one first to warm up i went ahead and picked up the 800lb one(trying to show off) I felt a pop in both knees and had pain the whole contest.
They haven't been right ever since.
The ice and nsaids have finally kicked in a pain is subsiding....i'll leave the squats out of the next leg day to let my old man knees heal up.

The only time pops are good are when they're in your cereal bowl. Glad you learned your lesson about showing off...Lord knows I've learned many lessons from doing the same thing! :BB: Keep me posted on how your knees are doing.

pain is still there...but only mild
I've been taping around my patellar tendon and over my rehbands with great success.
Just got done with legs and got 405x5x3 off the box with no belt with minimal pain in knees and no problems with the left quad(partially torn 9weeks ago)

You know how to tape for that sort of thing? "Homemade" tape job can be a bit risky...

best of luck with your knees. I have had recon before and knee problems can suck. this might not help your problem now but blew out my knee frosh summer of high school and waited 3 yrs to have surgery. every year i screwed it up again and the one thing docs always said was how important the hamstrings were to the stabilization of that area..made a lot of sense seeing as how everytime i messed up my knee i had missed time due to ham problems
