I just saw "Rocky Balboa." I was looking forward to this movie so much ever since I saw the thread here about it coming out. I watched the preview for it over and over again because it got me so freakin pumped up...but I gotta tell you, it was THE WORST movie ive ever seen. it had about 6 GREAT quotes in it, but I feel Mr. Stallone stole $5.25 from me. I wont give anything away, I'll let you be the judge of that, just thought I'd give my opinion.

I checked it out today but I'll agree with you. I think it would be an O.K. rental but thats about it. They only had about 5 minutes of training and then they rushed to the fight and to top it all off the style of presenting the fight was changed so it didn't feel like a Rocky Movie.

Thanks Brett you just saved me 10 bucks ($9.25-$9.75 to be exact).

You guys are all haters and should burn in HELL!!!!!!! HAHAH
Saw it tonight...they should have had a longer training section, but it was still freaking glorious. The movie was about Rocky passing the torch down....that's all I can say about it. Not as glorious as Rocky 4, but what other movie is? (don't answer that...because there is no answer). Just because the movie wasn't as glamourous as some of the other Rockys, it doesn' mean it isn't a great movie. It's simply the final chapter in the Rocky story, and not every chapter of a story is the same as the others, but they are all important! The Rocky saga is the single most inspiring and motivating set of movies ever made. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.

I'm know I'm not going to change anyone's mind on the internet, but I disagree with it being a horrible movie. I really liked it. I was thouroughly enjoyed it and am glad I went to see it. My only disappointment was the training scenes were almost non-existent -- very short. But all in all I think it was a great ending chapter to the Rocky saga.

Rocky IV ended the Cold War, how can it not be a good movie?? I saw Balboa last night, it was a nice cap to the Rocky's. After V, they had to do soething and I was happy that they killed Adrian. She's the most vile character ever. "You cant win!" They cut some stuff short but it was still a good movie.

He was so punch drunk and brain damaged his brother had to take care of him, feeding and such like a child and he was only in his 50's. It was really sad.

I hear ya... Mac... I have to say Jerry Cooney was the next Great White Dope... Morrison happened to be a distant relative of John Wayne (Marion Morrison, who also played football for USC... but I digress...) was actually not too shabby.. his only claim to fame, however, was going the distance against George Foreman, who could still knock out a tank at the age of 45. And Tommy was also famous for having his carded pulled for testing positive for HIV.
Just a little history... much love and happy holidays.
Mac Smith
12-21-2006, 12:27 PM
Kevin, I think you got Cooney confused with someone else. Cooney actually has his stuff together. He's the leader in trying to establish a boxing union to take care of those type boxers who can't take care of themselves. He was a decent fighter (knocked out Kenney Norton) and in case anyone doesn't know, the highest grossing boxing match of all time was Cooney vs. Holmes. Because everyone played the race card and Cooney was the great white hope. Needless to say Holmes dismantled Cooney in 13 rounds. Just a little bit of history!!!

I think that was Jerry Quarry with the brain damage(him and Mike Quarry-former lightheavyweight contender- lived in my home town of bakersfield Ca.- I knew Mike pretty well).
Jerry actually was a heck of a puncher...could take a good shot..but cut easily(Irish).
He actually knocked out Earnie Shavers when Earnie was in his Prime and beat very tough contender Ron Lyle.
Gerry Cooney actually could have been a pretty good fighter but his management brought him along improperly.
Cooney was fed a bunch of tomato cans and washed up fighters to "pad"his record....his umblemished record and being 6'7" ,great left hook and being white made him marketable.
He was then thrown in with larry holmes -at the top of his game-Larry destoyed Cooney...both physically and mentally.
Cooney's management went for the ONE big payday(10 million against Homes)rather than let the kid actually develop into a good fighter...which,IMHO,he could have been.

Cooney could have been a great one....but the way they brought him along didn't "teach"him much.
Being young he believed his press clippings. He thought he was invulnerable.
Holmes dismantled him..Cooney was never the same.
It was, obviously,a business decision on his managements part.
They new what they were doing and wanted a quick pay off on their investment.
Sadly Cooney--and the public--didn't see what was going on.IMHO.

We watched it last night.I was a little disappointed.I liked it,and Ill probably buy it,but it could have been so much better. When watching the old movies you could feel the motivation and intensity building up inside of you,but in this movie everything seemed too laid back. They should have done something better in the credits than showing various people dancing around at the top of the stairs rocky ran up.For some reason it made it seem like a joke.

I also know a lot about the KKK, but that doesn't make me a closet klansman!!!! :EL: Nah, I'm only jokin!! I don't hate the Rocky movies, but I wouldn't pay the $10 for a ticket to see a 60yr old fight anyone. Rocky movies are inspirational movies, good for cable and direct to DVD. Just because the man does some power training doesn't make the movie good. I've seen movies with Billy Blanks (of Tae Bo fame) doing cleans, plyos, and some decent squats, but that doesn't make me wanna go see Billy Blanks movies all of a sudden.
AND FOR ALL YOU SUPER SENSATIVE TYPES, I'M NOT COMPARING ROCKY TO THE KLAN!!!!!! RELAX!!!!!
I'm a huge boxing fan and IMO, Rocky does the sport a great diservice. Every fight the man is in, should be stopped because he is getting pummelled. Three knock down rules are never in effect in any fight Rocky is in because if they were, he would have lost every fight. Standing eight counts are non-existent as well.
I think the main reason why I'm not a big Rocky fan is because I can't relate to him. I identified more with the Carl Weathers character than anyone else in Rocky.

I went and saw it last night. After the 2nd knockdown in the 1st round, I leaned over and told my wife, "They'd stop a real fight right there." LOL.
I loved it, and I think people are going to either love it or hate it. The movie isn't about him fighting Dixon - it's about his own personal demons and fighting at life. That's why (IMHO) that there isn't as much training/fighting footage as there has been in other movies.
Did anybody else catch the George Foreman reference? At the end of the fight, when Balboa and Dixon hugged, Dixon said "Great fight" (or something similar), and Balboa said "Thanks for the opportunity." George Foreman said the same thing (in a fight with many of the same kinds of characteristics) after going 10 rounds with Evander Holyfield.

I think most sports movies are way off when it comes to the reality of the sport. Most football movies have absolutely horrible play simulation. It doesn't come close to looking like a real game. But that's because most sports movies are about more than the sport itself, I think.
The first Rocky and this last one are definiately NOT about boxing. A fight is part of the plot, but it's more about inspiration, standing up for yourself, not giving up, etc, etc. Of course, anyone that knows anything about boxing will know how unrealistic the fight scenes are. Just like others will recognize how unrealistic other sports scenes are in other movies. I still like Remember the Titans even though some of the game scenes are almost unwatchable in their realism.
Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to make you like Rocky. I'm just trying to point out that most of the Rocky's were about more than boxing. And I think that the people that find themselves moved by the Rocky movies aren't running out to start boxing, but they are running out with a feeling of conquering something and giving some situation, not necessarily even physical, everything they've got.
Or maybe I'm just full of it and it's just a bad boxing movie.

Don't know where you're from Andreas, but up until the late 60's, it was frowned upon for blacks and whites to be together. During the time of Jack Johnson it was illegal for a black man to be seen crossing any state border with a white woman without the presence or written consent of her father, husband, and/or guardian.

You believe wrong. Two of the horrible heavyweight division titles are owned by eastern europeans. Shannon Briggs owns the other. The light heavyweight belts is owned by one eastern european and one black guy. The recognized light heavyweight champion is vacant because Bernard Hopkins is retired.
The middleweight division doesn't have very many white boxers that are contenders. There are several B level European and eastern European fighters (Felix Sturm and Ricky Hatton come to mind) but they only fight in or around their home countries. Ricky Hatton may be the exception. He may be an A level fighter but he's struggled with fast/smart fighters. The majority get dismantled by American fighters when they come to the states. From 130-160 and above most of the A level fighters are hispanic or black. Not saying white guys can't fight. But they seem to gravitate toward the MMA realm rather than boxing. Boxing has always been dominated by the poorest of the magnitude. If you notice throughout the history of this country, boxing has gone through the dominance of Irish, Jews, Italians, blacks, and hispanics, now we are seeing an influx of eastern europeans. It seems to be the easiest way out of difficult situations.

Hmmm....what is it with black guys and rap "music"?? We all know that METAL RULES!
I think everyone, man or women, black, white, yellow or purple, should love Rocky.
Its about badly coordinated boxing scenes with crappy dialogs between oversized brawlers. Whats not to like?
Everyone doesn't have to like Rocky. ONce again you all are getting bent out of shape over nothing. I made the comment directed at Dan, because he and I go back and forth with the whole black/white thing. True the first story was a great story because it was based on a real life story of Chuck Wepner who fought Ali and gave Ali a pretty tough battle. I did like the first movie and all the accolades it got (including an Academy Award) was well deserved, but after that, it was a bunch of crap.
The original quote of "what is it with white guys and Rocky?", comes from Eddie Murphy's stand up from the 80's. It's been a long running joke.
I'm not going to go into rap v. metal. That's an argument for another day. Especially considering I think there are only 2 or 3 rap fans on this site. And for what it's worth, while I do like rap music, I prefer classic R&B (O Jays, Isley Brothers, etc) over rap. But Rap motivates me in the gym. And consider another point for all you rap haters. The majority of rap records aren't bought by blacks, but rather bought by whites from the suburbs making rap music (in various forms) the #1 music genre purchased in the US!!!

This is a movie I may rent and watch but I doubt it, I'll probably just wait and catch it on HBO in 6 or 8 months.
The only movie I'm looking forward to seeing in the near future and will probably be the only movie I go see at the theaters is the 300.
I watch that trailer and I want to go outside and get my sledgehammer and do some smashing.

Well said.
It is indeed how the history of boxing has played out......although in the early part of the century black athletes, sadly, dealt with the harshest of discrimination in athletics.
I do think some of the eastern Euros will be "around"in the heavier divisions of boxing for awhile.
Perhaps even someday dominating the division...for the very reasons you explained.
They will, probably, continue to dominate strongman also.
40 grand$-american- probably goes a long way in Poland or Lithuania(although what did 2nd place pay this year ;) )
....and if you are 6'2+,300+ there is no NFL....
Too big for soccer?to big or slow for rugby?not tall enough for basketball?...what's a big man to do?
Physically big,Cream of the crop eastern euro athletes will be involved in strength sports (and Boxing)for awhile....basically,IMHO, because other high paying athletic endeavors aren't available to them.
At least until the NFL has a franchise in Vilnius or Krakow. :D
American strongman fans can Thank good ness Phil chose "cross country"and "skateboarding"in highschool.
As Don King would say"only in america".

Don't know where you're from Andreas, but up until the late 60's, it was frowned upon for blacks and whites to be together. During the time of Jack Johnson it was illegal for a black man to be seen crossing any state border with a white woman without the presence or written consent of her father, husband, and/or guardian.
Norway, home of giants! :)
I know that the U.S. was segregated until the 60s, but it was the actual crossing of state lines that puzzled me. He just crossed a (1) line with a (1) woman? I was wondering if this was some widespread shipping activity he was engaged in *lol*.

I thought it was all three: Valjuev, Maskaev and Klitscho? I don`t follow boxing all that much, though, so a belt might have been lost while I wasn`t "paying attention".
I know that there`s some division "in between there" (somewhere in "the middle") with a lot of east-Europeans champs, but can`t remember which (a norwegian sports article mentioned it in an article about eastern European dominance in todays boxing).

I thought that the first Rocky was inspired by the story of James Braddock.

That was Cinderella Man with Russel Crowe.
I know but I think that Sly was insired by the story of Braddock when he wrote Rocky back in the 1970s. At least that was what he was saying on talk shows at the time. I also think that "On the Waterfront" was insired by the Braddock story. Of course since they are both works of fiction they have elements of many real life stories.

Could be a hybrid with the fight scences inspired by the Ali/Wepner fight as Mac said but the overall story line and plot based on Braddock. I would bet Stallone had many angles on the original Rocky.

Here is something I found from Matt Furey, it is his review of the movie...not sure what to say to this, I have not seen the film yet. In case you do not know who Matt Furey is, he wrestled at Iowa and fought professionally (not boxing) for a bunch of years, he advocated bodyweight training.
"Yesterday afternoon I went to see Rocky Balboa with
my wife and son. It is the sixth movie in the Rocky series,
and apparently, the last.
I took my son so he could see the training scenes as well
as the fight. Although he's only six, he's already showing
great interest in sports and physical training - and this is
not due to me pushing him or shoving the idea down his
throat.
For example, I rarely watch professional football, baseball or
basketball anymore. A lot of times the Super Bowl and World
Series don't even interest me. I wasn't this way when I was
a youngin - but I am now.
Yet, despite the lack of interest in most sports today, my son
is a fanatic. He watches football every Sunday - knows every
team - even called me when I was in China - at 5:30 a.m. - to
let me know that the Colts lost yet again.
We were recently given tickets to see the Bucs play in their final
game this year, and the boy is ecstatic.
Anyway, I figured Rocky Balboa would be a great movie for Frank;
especially in terms of motivation; of not giving up when life whacks
you.
10 minutes into the movie, however, Frank is asking, "Daddy, when are
they going to fight?"
Five minutes later he is lying sideways in his chair ... sleeping.
Don't blame
him.
He did, however wake up before the training began, and the boxing match
- and
he got very excited. I did, too, in spite of the fact that Rocky's
training regime, for
the most part, was absolutely the worst imaginable fitness program for
a 60-year
old former champion to follow.
The uphill sprints were great. So were the sprints up stairs. Punching
the heavy bag
was spot on - and slugging the frozen cattle carcass was perfect.
Other than that, though, with the exception of some pushups - most of
the training
involved Rocky doing heavy barbell squats, heavy bench presses, power
cleans,
the clean and jerk, and so on. It was riveting. It was exciting to
watch. But it is the
wrong way to train for boxing. It most assuredly is the wrong way to
train for a
man in his 50's and 60's.
Stallone gets away with it, it appears, yet the varicose veins in his
shoulder and pecs,
a rare sight on any man, and certainly something you never see on a man
who trains
with his own bodyweight, make me wonder what price he is paying in pain
to appear
"fit."
I admire the fact that Stallone has kept himself lean and mean - but I
also know the
influence on training behavior a movie like this can have, and in my
opinion, it's
sending the wrong message.
In a couple shots Rocky was using a kettlebell, and I thought that was
pretty cool even
though I'm not a big fan of them. They're definitely a better choice
than heavy barbells.
What was funny to me was how Rocky's trainer told him that he couldn't
spar because
of all the calcium deposits and arthritis in his joints, he couldn't do
road work because
he had bad knees - then you see Rocky running and lifting heavy
weights. Since when
does someone with calcium deposits and arthritis train with heavy
barbells?
Dumb.
In spite of the above, overall I liked the movie and give it a thumbs
up. So does my
wife. The fight scene at the end was awesome - kept my pupils enlarged
the whole
time.
Even though Frank snoozed through part of it, he liked it too. Evenso,
I think he's much
more into Star Wars, Sponge Bob and Eragon."

Thumbs up for me. Love to see more training, maybe that will be in the extended DVD? Thought the fight was put together really well and it sold me. Thought Tarver did a good job too. Really well done film.

Most likely fake. I'd like to believe he could do 315 though.
